Game Thread Ohio State vs Penn State, 10/28/17 @ 3:30 ET (FOX)

I don't know if I've ever seen anything like that in my life. There are so many ways you can talk about this game it's just amazing. I mean someone could actually try to convince me today that kickoffs need to be removed from the game. I might actually listen to it. BIG refs are not even close to being on the same page this late in the season. Does JK lose more yards per game than any other player due to being on the sideline? Was Jordan Fuller an unsung hero yesterday? Seemed like he just came to work and did his job. Is it a curb stomping if you don't take the lead until the final minutes of the game?

Joe Thomas Barrett IV is something beyond special. I've seen some say that winning a NC will cement his legacy. While I agree a second one would be nice, his legacy is unrivaled at this point for me. Class and composure all night. I'm glad I'm not someone that feels the need to apologize for saying they wanted him benched. I Think his performance yesterday went beyond showing his ability to win a big game. Being a 3 time captain is no fluke. Looks like the rest of the offense is ready and willing to follow him into hell and back for battle.

Seriously, How Amazing Was That?

How do you describe a game that exists beyond the accepted bounds of known language?

That’s always the problem with writing about a game like Ohio State’s 39-38 come-from-behind win over No. 2 Penn State on Saturday.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then there’s really no way to properly describe the entire scene of last night.

And besides, considering how odd this game was, nobody would believe the written word anyway — except for the part about Saquon Barkley returning a kickoff for a touchdown.

“It’s believable, but probably too predictable,” would be that review.

Ohio State trailed 21-3 just over three minutes into the second quarter and 28-10 halfway through the second period. They were down by 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Even though Penn State wasn’t the cause of all of the Buckeyes’ ailments, they were the cause of enough of them to think that it was going to be pretty darn difficult to overcome everything OSU was fighting against.

Yet with everything going against them — including logic and reason — Ohio state came through and pulled out one of the most miraculous wins of the Urban Meyer era.

Oh, and this game just happened to be against the No. 2-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, who stole a game from the Buckeyes one year ago.

Aside from the opening kickoff, there was nothing formulaic or predictable about this game.

Even the twists and turns had twists and turns.

Interceptions turned into touchdowns.

Fumbles turned into defensive holding calls.

And perhaps most unbelievable of all, the Ohio State special teams actually ignited the spark that sent the Buckeyes storming through Penn State’s front door, barely stopping to knock.

From that point on, OSU controlled the line of scrimmage on every snap. The offensive line kept J.T. Barrett’s pocket so clean you’d think they were neat freaks. The Buckeyes defensive line, meanwhile, ransacked the place. Whatever it was they were looking for, they found it — repeatedly.

Goodbye, Heisman? Buckeyes Keep Barkley On Tight Leash

Saquon-Barkley.jpg

It was supposed to be a Heisman showcase, a chance for one of the greatest college football players in the nation to prove his bonafides against top-caliber competition. That is, indeed, what happened Saturday night in Ohio Stadium. Just not for the player most people expected.

While Buckeye QB J.T. Barrett exploded for a school-record 423 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, Penn State RB Saquon Barkley had a much quieter day.

After returning the opening kickoff for a 97-yard touchdown, Barkley added a 36-yard touchdown early in the second quarter that extended Penn State’s lead to 21-3. Outside of that 30 total seconds of excitement, one of the country’s most exciting players was nearly invisible.

He rushed a total of 21 times for 44 yards, meaning Barkley had just 8 yards on his other 20 rushes. And a week after creating a nightmarish matchup for Michigan’s defense in the passing game, he managed only 23 yards on four catches.

After the game, Urban Meyer was so shocked by the stat sheet that asked OSU sports information director Jerry Emig to confirm that the numbers were really correct.

“He had 21 carries for 44 yards, if I’m reading that right. Is that right?” Meyer asked. “One was a 36-yard carry. Our defense was all over him.”

But to Meyer, shutting down Barkley through the air might have been even more impressive.

“One of the biggest things that makes him such a great player is the ability to catch the ball. And I was as worried about that, because we’re a man coverage team, all of a sudden you get stuck with a linebacker playing man-to-man, like you saw against our rivals. That’s a credit. We had the bye week to prepare for them, too. But we still have incredible respect for him as a player,” Meyer said.

OSU DE Sam Hubbard said that the key to success was that the Buckeyes weren’t trying to do too much, and just plugged the holes they were supposed to.

Great headline here.....

Ohio State blows out Penn State... with a one point win.

Ohio State’s incredible comeback was due to a dominant defense that set up J.T.’s fourth quarter

Before jumping into the numbers, it’s worth just appreciating how incredible of a game that was. J.T. and the receivers, the defensive line, and the fourth-quarter coaching were absolutely insane in this game.

Due to special teams, turnovers, and penalties, this became a very, very improbable win:

Things were so dire that Ohio State had a 2.7% win probability according to ESPN with under eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Ohio State faced the second-ranked team in the country and essentially gave them a 21-point handicap due to special teams errors.

Nope. Not even close. People actually thought the fucking jerseys were part of why the first half started the way it did. That's fucking idiocy.
Actually, all of BN owes me a thank you. I won that game. For Clemson and Oklahoma I made my sacred Mexican been dip and we know what happened. I considered just altering the recipe, but decided to forego it altogether, and the results speak for themselves. Lol.

You're welcome.
