Game Thread Ohio State vs Northwestern, 10/29/16, 3:30pm ET ESPN/WatchESPN

I still think going up tempo. like we used to, would help this offense tremendously. It keeps the defnese on their heels and allows the Oline to get a quick push before they are set. We could easily be running the slant routes that NW was killing us with all day. Get that ball to Samuel or Wilson or McClarin on that kine of route, instead of the stop and turn routes, and watch what happens. This would get the ball out of JT's hands faster and again take the pressure off of the Oline.

I know Arnette struggled and we seemed soft in the middle defensively, but I am less concerned about the defense if the Offense can get on track.

I don't have much positive to say after that game except that we are ridiculously young and I do think the talent is there, but we are just going to have to take our lumps in the meantime. I see at least one more loss, likely two-three, unless we do a 180 on special teams and offense. Hell, even the defense better step it up because they have been slipping.

Number one, PLEASE STOP RUNNING THE SPEED OPTION. STOP STOP STOP running that play or I am going to lose it. It has literally worked about 0% of the time and we insist on it for whatever reason. Second, even if you don't have a deep threat that gets behind defenders, push the ball deep and see if we catch some contested balls. Plenty of teams are doing this without having a ton of separation and I know Noah Brown can catch a contested ball. Back shoulder throws can work. To wit, JT...please give our receivers an actual chance to catch said deep ball. Love his leadership but he is too inconsistent right now and needs to tighten it up. His stats in the box score looks much better than the result imo. Third, make a damn adjustment on offense when things are not working. The only thorn in our side under UFM is insistence on running plays that are not working until the end and yes, that includes under Herman as great as he was.

Most of all, I really don't see any inspiration...definitely no "choke you over checkers" looks and really, I don't see it in any single player right now. The closest is Nick Bosa and JT in my eyes. Maybe Conley/Lattimore. I just see heads down being dejected and the same goes for Urban...he needs to quit looking so damn frustrated and defeated on the sideline. I see it, his players see it, and that does nothing but take away confidence. He is a great coach and I look the same during the games, but I am not getting paid millions to lead the team. He is. Act like a leader Urban.

And probably most importantly, there are chinks in the armor on the OL. I am not tracking what we are doing and I certainly trust the coaches, but...we have a freak 6'7 athlete playing RT instead of LT. We have a 6'4 solid OL that is built like an interior OL playing LT. We have what seems to be a natural RT in Michael Jordan playing guard. And on the topic of Jordan, he is getting beaten badly on a regular basis. He has the talent, but we really need to let Knox/Lisle/someone else get a chance in an actual game situation and see what happens, because he is just not getting it done. There was a reason there was concern that a true freshman was starting on our OL and that fear has become a reality. But you can't pick on him too much, every player else not named Pat Elflein seems to be having issues on the OL. But Jordan is sticking out to me.

In short, we better get it together fast or Nebraska could beat the hell out of us next week.

For all the painful aspects of our offense, the most concerning thing about this team to me is the lack of aggressiveness on defense. There is a severe lack of violence
I think a part of it is right now they know it's basically up to them to win these games, because the offense is a dumpster fire. That's a lot of pressure on a young defense.

I think it was nailed on the last page...the reason the play calling is so awful is that they can't trust the players to execute.

There are two really glaring deficiencies, to me. One, the OL is terrible. It just is. I wouldn't trust them to hold up against an FCS team right now. They're young, I get that...but the crap we're seeing is to be expected in September. Going into November, you should start seeing improvement...but they seem.to be getting worse by the week.

Two, the WRs are a clown show. Aside from Brown against OU, not one.of them has done shit all year. There's not a single guy I can look at and say "he's gonna be good next year." Many of them were highly rated recruits, so somebody should be able to do something at some point. Not one of these guys would have been in the two deep the past couple of years. Hard to go downfield when you have zero trust in your receivers to make a play.
