Game Thread Ohio State vs Northwestern, 10/29/16, 3:30pm ET ESPN/WatchESPN

This right here in spades. I watched yesterday as NW threw back to back to back slants for good yardage against us. I saw Clemson, FSU, and hell even a Freshman at SC throwing the slant with great succes. This seems like a perfect pass for Barrett throw.
Hell, go back to 2014 and watch osus route trees. Night and day different.

A lot of offense and coaching talent walked out the door with Herman.

That picture was probably after Carr caught the ball for 20 yards so sure...

I guess the one person I've never thought to critique is JT and yeah he definitely need a to be sharper. in fact the year we won the championship I posted about how it may have won us the championship when Cardale came in to end the season. Not because JT was bad but because teams had figured us out a bit after the MSU win that year. Slow game against Minnesota, Indiana, and a slow scum game until he got hurt.

Then Cardale comes in and blows the doors off 3 people. Because teams didn't know how to defend CJ and it was essentially like bringing in Andrew Miller after finally figured out our starter. It kept defenses guessing because they had no film on CJ.

THIS is where our stubbornness comes into play here. Our coaches should've assessed our tendencies by now and figured out a way to throw a change up when they're expecting a fast ball.

Our mindset is we have better talent then you and we will out execute you. Great against the Bowling Greens not against the big ball clubs

I think it's pretty clear that Urbans philosophy is to have better athletes than anybody, keep the system simple and allow the athletes to think less/play faster. I have zero doubt that is the surest path to victory.

Where I think they have fallen off the beam a little bit is in 2 key areas. Play calling and player development/recruiting at the WR position.

Playcalling:
  • To your point, OSU offensive coaches seem to have no change up. It's fine to have, say 5, basic plays that you ruthlessly execute with superior athleticism. When the other team over compensates to stop one of those plays you must have something ready to make them pay.
  • I don't see the overpowering fastball/devastating change up repertoire from the offensive play callers. It seems like when one play gets stuffed, they go to a different kind of play instead of one that looks the same but makes the defense pay for the cheat.
  • A great pitcher has a feel for how and when to use a certain pitch to set hitters up. It is the game within the game. Our play callers seem to be the type who just keep trying to throw the perfect pitch with no real plan on how to attack a hitter.
  • They also seem to lack the basic courage to challenge a hitter. To continue the metaphor, they nibble and try to be too fine which ultimately negates the advantage they have over the hitter. To me, this incorporates all flavors of "the play calling sucks!" rants that I see/hear but, like all metaphors, it isn't a perfect comparison.

WR talent/recruiting:
  • Relying on superior talent is fine but player development is a huge part of that and, as well as OSU does it overall, the WR corps has clearly been different in the first 5 years for Meyer.
  • Yes, Mike Thomas and Jalin Marshall but the the only guy they have had that made the offense click, who took the top off a defense was Devin Smith and they inherited him.
  • Worse yet, they have never recruited/developed anyone to be his replacement and because of it they lost a once in a lifetime chance to repeat in 2015 and are still paying the price in 2016.
It is never just one thing. JT Barrett isn't a great passing QB no matter what the cumulative stats may be but the overall lack of a passing game and no feel for the changeup from the OSU play callers is just killing this offense.

Agree with the majority of your thoughts but I have no problem with where the OL are lined up. Jones is the better tackle. If Prince was protecting JT's blindside, JT may be in a coma right now. He's plenty big enough to play tackle at 6'5 too. Jordan may be built like a RT but that would kick Prince off the lineup because no way is he built to play guard. If Lisle, Burrell, or Knox(when healthy) were better options than Jordan, they'd be playing.

Bad playcalling and bad execution in the pass game are making the OL look worse than they are.

I hesitated to say that and you make pretty good points. I am not particularly qualified to nitpick where our OL line up...it just seems odd to me. Jordan's biggest issue seems to be handling the strength of interior OL and I think that would be less of an issue on the edge, although I am not sure how he would handle the speed on the edge. However, I do see him just flat-out missing assignments and that goes for much of the OL. I think we are talented up front, but for some reason we are not meshing well and missing assignments...and like someone else said in this thread, that does not bode well heading into November.

That's what I mean and to me it's stubbornness and borderline arrogant to think you can just run the same core plays and come away with a win no matter what.

When we lose games our offense can be outright awful. Tech 14, MSU 15, PSU 16 all were games where a team absolutely sold out and took away what we wanted to do. Worse yet we didn't counter punch like you mentioned Jax.

We have two coordinators and we still fail to properly adjust to what teams are giving us and counter their moves. IMO there's no fixing this it's just who we are and next year I'm of the belief that we will need to make a coordinator change.

This is who they are as coordinators we now have 20 games of historical data and it tells us we are a offense that lacks innovation, aggressiveness, adjustability, and more importantly execution and urgency.

I also think the coordinators are a square peg in a round hole. Tim Beck has just never really been successful. Warriner, when he was oc at Kansas didn't run this type of system.

Urban made the coordinator hires and promotions to try and make as seamless transition as possible in 2015 given the talent on hand. But it's not appearing to be a good fit.

JT had some bad throws, but he also stepped up to seal the game for a defense that couldn't get off the field and gave up multiple 3rd and longs, if we're pointing fingers.

I thought the offense had some very good drives and Mike Weber began running through defenders like we haven't seen him do before. It seems like he really wants to improve to help this team win. I was impressed with the strides he made yesterday. That will be good news for us if he continues to get better and run harder.

Kind of chicken and egg with the offense and defense. When the offense struggles, then the defense is on the field a lot. They looked gassed, especially in the third. Certainly the defense coaches needed to make some adjustments and were reluctant to do so.

Weber was playing great and inexplicably the coaches went away from him. Not the first time we have seen the coaches go away from what is successful to continue to force other plays. One thing is for sure, this is the most stubborn coaching staff I can recall when it comes to making any sort of adjustments.....

Keyword is isn't. He was on track to be under Herman. Then Beck fucked with his fundamentals and now he has robotic/unnatural mannerisms which have hindered his touch and feel for the game. He threw some beautiful passes in '14. The offensive players are getting a raw deal right now, IMO.
