Game Thread Ohio State vs Michigan State, 11/11/17 @ 12:00 ET (FOX)

Tressel is my favorite coach in any sport, probably because I've always seen the game the way he does.

Tressel always gave you the impression that if his offense/defense could only do one thing effectively, they would only do that one thing.
So the 2007 NC game Tressel's Buckeyes just couldn't do anything effectively, eh. :panic: Indeed the same 12-0 team that many were considering the best Ohio State team of all-time having just won the game of the decade against the TTUN.

Yea, maybe the experts were correct when they said the B1G may have been a tad overrated from the years 2003-2010 hence, ergo, therefore leading to Tressel's impressive er not so impressive B1G won/loss record.

Did I mention the Buckeye's 2007 NC performance was totally unimpressive/ineffective ...

Ironically in bowl games the B1G won both head to head games against the SEC making Tressel's 2007 drubbing all the more disturbing:

Instead, I’ll use this time to remind you that Big 10 teams are 4-3 ATS thus far in the Bowl Season while SEC schools are 5-3 versus the number. However, in head-to-head matchups the Big 10 is 2-0 SU and ATS in bowl games against the SEC. Penn State and Wisconsin upset Tennessee and Arkansas, respectively, on New Year’s Day. Both won in convincing fashion, almost forcing me to down three-quarters of a bottle of Drano in the process.

The underlying theme of the Penn State and Wisconsin victories was that their raw power and solid game planning was able to suppress the faster and more athletic Southeastern clubs. I always say that football is a violent game, and that patty-cake teams don’t come through when the stakes are high and the money is flying around. This could be one of those times.

Florida certainly is a flashy squad. Their speed, on both sides of the ball, is superior to anyone they match up against and is greater than anything that the Buckeyes have faced this year. Urban Meyer is an offensive mastermind, and with over a month to plan for this game he will most likely have an intricate combination of offensive formations perfected for this game. Florida can put pressure on a defense in a variety of ways and they can hang a big number on the board if this turns into a shootout.

Yes, Urban is not perfect and has shortcomings, but have never been overly impressed w/the senator having lost many/many games the Buckeyes should have won. Bottom line: Meyer (3) NC's / Tressel (1) and one of Meyer's was a total blowout of Tressel's overconfident/unprepared/undisciplined/unfocused team.

>

And for those of you who love Tressel and will continue to do so regardless, happy trails!

This will be a good game... I think we do lose the game only because Dantonio is really good being the underdog. You add LJ Scott to that mix with a QB who's been making plays the past few weeks.

I just don't like our defense in this matchup but I do think we find success on offense.

Something like 31-28

Alrighty then, comparing a (16) team NCAA sub-division format to a (2) team, now (4) team Division 1 format notwithstanding, Tressel also has Meyer beat in ***championships*** lost 8 to 1.

3 times not making it out of the first round and 1 time not making it out of the second round. Go Penguins!

Tressel also has Urban beat in # of times resigning in disgrace! 1 to 0. :jt:

btw, I'm still here also at least 'til Sat. Please tip the waitresses ...

No need to bash JT just to win an argument

Not in any relevant metric. This is Urban's sixth year at OSU. Saying Tressel is 5-3 at anything is meaningless by comparison.

In Tressel's first six years at OSU he...

Went 5-1 against Michigan
Won two Big Ten Championships
Won one National Championship
Looked foolish trying to win a second national championship.

Urban needs to win out just to match Tressel.

ETA: Going 6-0 against Michigan is his lone hope of bettering Tressel.

In the NBA they have what they call schedule travel losses. A coach can look at the travel portion of the schedule and pretty much assume certain travel games will be a loss because his team will be exhausted after the travel part. I think that's a part of what happened to the Buckeyes last week and part of why Iowa is so tough at home. That being said some defensive issues are recurring on this team. And haven't been "fixed" yet for reasons not clear.
And the offense had an untypical game. Everything but the special teams went wrong at once.
Sparty is not a "super" team but an improved , typical Sparty team and beatable away from home. They have won a number of close games.
Go Buckeyes! It's bounce back week!

All I’m hearing from the Sparty guys is how they’re locked in to win a Big Ten a Championship, how this is a must win game that they will do anything to win, how they’re playing this one for a teammate who lost his dad, etc.

Hope the Bucks bring that same mentality, because this team coming in on Saturday wants it badly. They don’t care about the CFP or any of that nonsense, as it should be. They’re planning on leaving everything they have on the field.

I’m curious to see if Ohio State can bring the type of focus to this one that will get the opponent out of position when their emotions get the best of them. If MSU faces some big problems or turnovers early in the game, it could get in their heads.

@Telekinesis you forgot about the Ohio kids that they always bring up. You know the "I wasn't good enough to get an offer from Ohio State, so I want to prove them wrong" kids that they always bring up. I also bet you never heard that Dantonio is from Zanesville :sarcastic:. So, they got all that going for them....which is nice...

No, I’m aware of all these things as well. We camp right outside of Zanesville multiple times a year and catch the games with the locals on Saturday, so I’m well versed in Dantonio lore and family ties.

You’re right about all this, though. They have a plethora of things to be amped up about.

But like I said, this can also lead to let downs and panicking if they feel it slipping away from them. If they get too jittery and make mistakes, it could eat them alive.

Edit: For what it’s worth, I’ve heard they have 26 kids from Ohio and 10 of them are starters. Not sure how accurate that is, but yeah, it’s a factor.

Hey through all of this I've maintained both are excellent coaches... I just prefer Jim as painful as his offenses were.

Like Oregon said no need tear down Tressel. That said, when people have to tear down someone it's normally because you're losing that comparison.

Seriously lets put this a side for a boring Tuesday in March...
