Game Thread Ohio State vs Cincinnati - 09/07/19, 12:00PM (ABC)

Yeah I mean, UC isn't super talented, but they have a disciplined D that will be solid to good this year. The offense rarely struggled and really just did whatever they wanted until they started to run clock at the end of the 3rd.
Cincy is the type of defense that gave Urban teams fits in the past. To see them go out and basically do whatever they wanted was super encouraging. Offensive line looked night and day better than last week.

OHIO STATE DOMINATES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL TO BLOW OUT CINCINNATI, 42-0, IN LUKE FICKELL'S RETURN TO COLUMBUS

For the second week in a row, Ohio State scored the first 28 points of the game.

This time, the Buckeyes were able to build on it.

In a game that was expected to be more competitive for the scarlet and gray, Ohio State dominated from beginning to end, earning a 42-0 win over Cincinnati to spoil Luke Fickell’s return to Columbus as the Bearcats’ head coach.

Justin Fields completed 20 of 25 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns and added 42 yards and another two touchdowns on the ground, while J.K. Dobbins ran for 141 yards and two touchdowns of his own. Stars on the defensive side of the ball for the Buckeyes include Chase Young, who had 1.5 sacks and blocked a field goal attempt, and Shaun Wade, who forced a fumble and also had two pass breakups, one of which led to an interception.

Ohio State’s first drive of the game was stalled by a holding penalty against Jonah Jackson, which forced the Buckeyes to punt from the 39-yard line. Drue Chrisman’s punt was downed by Chris Olave at the 1-yard line, though, and Ohio State got the ball back at Cincinnati’s 41-yard line after forcing a 3-and-out. The Buckeyes took advantage of the short field with a five-play touchdown drive, capped by a 7-yard Fields run into the end zone.

After another punt by the Bearcats on their second possession, Ohio State drove back down to the Bearcats’ 20-yard line. The Buckeyes ended up turning the ball over on downs, however, when Fields was stopped short of the line-to-make on a 4th-and-1 run attempt.

Cincinnati made it inside Ohio State’s red zone on its next possession after a 4th-and-1 conversion on a Desmond Ridder run and a third-down roughing the passer penalty against Ohio State defensive tackle Tommy Togiai on the next set of downs. But after a 7-yard sack by Tyreke Smith and a third-down run stop by Smith two plays later, Young blocked a 32-yard field goal attempt by Sam Crosa to keep the Bearcats off the board.

Ohio State drove 87 yards in six plays on its next possession, highlighted by a 24-yard run by Dobbins and capped by a 4-yard Dobbins run into the end zone untouched.

Buckeyes Dismantle Bearcats In Impressive Fashion, 42-0

Baron-Browning-tackle.jpg

The Ohio State defense used constant pursuit and relentless aggression in a 42-0 shutout win of the Cincinnati Bearcats (1-1) on Saturday.

For the second week in a row, the #5 Buckeyes (2-0) used the first half to show the world what they were capable of. This time around, however, they also used the second half to impress some people.

Ohio State went to the half with a 28-0 lead and tacked on two more touchdowns in the second half, all the while the OSU defense remained its salty self by flying to the football on every snap.

This game didn’t quite start as hot as last week’s, but it maintained its temperature for a much longer period of time.

Unlike last week, the Buckeyes didn’t score until their second drive of the game. The drive only went 41 yards, aided by the Bearcats being pinned on their previous possession. On first and goal from the 7-yard line, Fields looked for a receiver before pulling the ball down and running up the middle for the score.

Following the game, OSU head coach Ryan Day called that play his favorite Fields moment of the day.

Early in the second quarter, Cincinnati drove down into the red zone, but had a 31-yard field goal attempt blocked by Chase Young. The Buckeyes would respond with an 87-yard touchdown drive featuring a 20-yard completion to Binjimen Victor, a 24-yard run by JK Dobbins, and a 21-yard pass to Chris Olave. It was capped by a JK Dobbins’ run from four yards out.

That would be the first of three second-quarter touchdowns for Ohio State.

On OSU’s next possession, Dobbins went 60 yards through the left side of the line for a score. It was the second-longest rush of his career. Dobbins finished with 141 yards rushing on 17 carries with two scores.

More big plays followed on the next possession, as Fields hit Chris Olave on a deep pass down the sideline for 39 yards to put OSU at the Cincinnati 11-yard line. The drive ended with a 9-yard touchdown pass to true freshman receiver Garrett Wilson to make it 28-0. It was the first catch of Wilson’s career.

The Bearcats opened the second half with the football, but Chase Young closed their first drive with a sack on third down. Young finished with 1.5 sacks for the second week in a row.

Cincinnati mounted a 53-yard drive and an 80-yard drive in the second half, but both drives ended in turnovers. Their final drive featured a fumble into the end zone, which was recovered by OSU defensive back Marcus Williamson.

Ohio State Postgame: Updates from Ryan Day, Justin Fields Following Win Over UC

Ryan-Day-Laughing-Press-Conference.jpg

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day spoke with reporters following Ohio State’s 42-0 win over Cincinnati. He spoke of his team’s outstanding performance and some of the individuals that made it happen. Preceding Day, Buckeye quarterback Justin Fields took to the podium to talk about his excellent day. You can check out all of the highlights of what was said below.

Ryan Day
+ What an unbelievable crowd and they were all in their seats for kickoff. That atmosphere can be overwhelming for an opponent. It got the team going.

+ This game wasn’t as “funky” as last week’s game. They emphasized sustaining their performance this week because last week gave them a bad taste in their mouth.

+ JK Dobbins was angry all week about last week’s performance. He got going today and the offensive line did a great job. Tribute to Kevin Wilson and Greg Studrawa.

+ It’s another step in the journey of this defense. In the preseason he knew they were going to be tough. It’s not a finished product, but they’re flying around. This is what they envisioned.

+ Day wasn’t watching the Michigan game. They were singing and dancing in the locker room.

+ He’s not sure where this team is in terms of what he’s envisioned. They want to be the best in the country, but it’s too early in the season to know that.

+ Every week is a whole new season, so they have to keep building on this.

+ The play that stood out to him for Justin Fields, they called a play-action pass, but UC played a different defense than they expected, so he was able to scramble in for the touchdown up the middle.

+ Fields didn’t need to take the sack that lost four yards. He could have thrown it away.

+ Day almost ruptured his Achilles on the near pick six by Chase Young.

+ Justin Fields is throwing the ball very well right now and it’s not by accident. They work hard on it.

+ Fields is definitely being helped by those around him.

+ The shutout is a tribute to the defensive staff. They are all involved in it. They put together a great game plan, but they preach fundamentals and technique. The challenge this week was to not let them score this week once the young guys went in this week. Stripping the ball at the goal line was a good sign that they weren’t quitting.
