Erroneous. Carolina pork is sauced. It's just not the thick sugary/smokey sauce that people associate with bbq. It's thin and vinegar you. Google it, and you'll see that not only does it get sauce but there are sub-regional variations: Western (pretty much just cider vinegar, dk brown sugar and pepper flakes) (add some ketsup or tomato paste) and South Carolina (yellow mustard based due to large influx of krauts).

I don't need to Google it. When I lived in Eastern North Carolina, there was no sauce. Vinegar and spiced marinade that the pig was basted in on the spit. My first roast, being the stupid northerner (their name) that I was I asked for bbq sauce. The dude looked at me like I was from mars. I agree South Carolina is different than North Carolina, with the mustard base.
