Game Thread Ohio State @ Purdue - 10/20/18, 7:30PM (ABC)

Anyone been to Purdue and have suggestions for where to drink and hang before the game tomorrow??
Harry's Chocolate Shop and Brother's Bar are both about a mile away from the stadium. Expect idiot college kids in costumes all day...not for Halloween but "Breakfast Club" where they wake up on gamedays, put on costumes and drink at 7am. Good way to "Go Ugly Early" (shirts sold by Harry's).

Down the road a little further (on the way in to campus) is Triple XXX- not a strip joint- but a good diner for a burger (Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives). Expecting most of those places to be packed with Buckeyes.

Excited.

Beyond pumped for this one. Team has proven resilience on the road. Fans and media calling the upset due to criticism of Buckeye performance last few weeks. Think they come out pissed and dominate.

I could see that. I damn sure want to see it.

It feels like Buckeye Nation has been sitting around a funeral parlor for 3 weeks waiting for the team's corpse to be delivered while the team is still drawing breath and in the fight. The team hears and reads the same kind of stuff, probably more. I know I am sick of it. I am hoping they get sick of it as well, get pissed then go out tomorrow night and pecker slap these annoying ass choo choo nerds back into reality.

If I could get the 2018 Buckeye football team to understand one thing it would be this: Every once in a while, the lion has to show the jackals who he is.

Hell yes! The midweek departure of Bosa got more people bitching, whining and basically giving up on the season. Fuck that noise. 7-0 chance to go 8-0 with the best passing qb and receiving crew we've ever seen at Ohio State. Get run going and clean up D a bit and they will be unstoppable.

Advanced stats: What is the likelihood this turns into a shootout, or even an upset?

Either one is on the table.

Purdue is kind of like the antimatter version of Minnesota.

Minnesota won its first three games before dropping its only games against Big Ten competition. Purdue lost its first three games by a combined eight points, with S&P+ post game win expectancies over 59 percent in all of them, but has won its last three games by at least two scores. Purdue has 4.5 second-order wins, meaning that even though the Boilermakers are 3-3, they’ve played more like a 5-1 or 4-2 team. (Post-game win expectancies take your most predictive advanced stats for a game, put them in a blender, and then tell you how often on average you’d be expected to win that particular game. Second order wins add up your post-game win expectancies.)

Where Minnesota was definitely a defense-led team with an offense that ranked in the 100s, Purdue has a top-20 opponent-adjusted offense that is insanely explosive, but a defense that ranks in the 80s.

Minnesota still found some offensive success against Ohio State – even if it didn’t translate to the scoreboard – despite a poor offensive statistical profile, and effectively limited Ohio State’s offense, especially in the red zone. Purdue has a profile that matches up perfectly with Ohio State’s defense, and a defense of their own that should allow the Buckeyes to score plenty of points.

So are we in a for a shootout? Or even an upset?

These charts are intended to help visualize relative strengths and weaknesses. The farther apart the two teams’ radar points are from each other for any given statistic, the more lopsided that matchup is expected to be.

This game is starting to feel like Sparty from last year. At least in the lead up to it. Hopefully it turns out about the same.

Sparty 2017 - Close win against Penn State, then Ohio State gets smoked by Iowa. Then we were all worried about Sparty. 48-3.
Nebraska 2016 - After losing to Penn State, Ohio State struggled to beat Northwestern. Then Nebraska was coming to town. Seemed like it was going to be a tough game. 62-3
Xichigan 2015 - Close loss to Sparty, and Xichigan is flying high. Looked like trouble. 42-13.

This game kinda feels the same.

Can't play at Purdue without remembering this play.

Watched that damn game in my mom's hospital room on a little 5 inch TV. She died 2 weeks before we beat Miami to win it all. My dad died the morning of the championship game. If you want to know the meaning of the word "bittersweet" the 2002 championship season was it. I guess "Holy Buckeye" brings it back to me whenever we play at Purdue, but I'm damn glad the Buckeyes did it, especially since every asshole outside of Ohio said it couldn't happen. Some things you never forget.
