Ohio State now #3 in All-Time Winning Percentage, #5 in Wins

while at first i would agree i thought about it.

then i look at national championships and i disagree. but then you think about it and win percentage is based on a consistency not nc factor really.

its pretty hard to explain unless you say it is based on the fact that those teams are year in year out good. which in my life time that is what seperates a michigan from a usc

Well said. In the end, USC will end up with it's ups and downs. Just look at "da U" for a prime example. Our heartland teams are consistantly filled with mostly local talent, guys who grew up with one thought and that is to play for the pride of their state.

Beautiful weather and a Hollywood atmosphere works for them now, but after California suffers the big earth quake, where will they be? Floating somewhere out in the Pacific, that's where!:wink2:

very good point. though you see it elsewhere. but theosu has the advantage as it is one of a few schools who is the only major college in the state.

notre dame, it really goes back to the good old days and those train trips, practicing all over the country. give rockne credit he built something that lasted i would say into the early 90s. (thats like 70 years folks)

michigan modern history isnt as good to them, they tended to be the earlier arrival in the midwest and beat on everyone else.

all in all lots of different reasons. but i still go back to the fact those teams, year in year out, tend to be very competitive. they tend to produve year in year out.

It's not completely invalid, as football in the earlier days was much more top-heavy than it is now.

That means that back then, schools with developed football teams would play schools with developing football teams, thus inflating not only all-time wins, but winning pctg.

These 3 schools have been playing football for many more years than alot of the SEC schools.....
If by "3 schools" you meant Michigan, and by "alot" you meant, well, virtually none, then yeah.

Ohio State's 116 is the same as Vanderbilt, one year more than Kentucky, two more than Auburn, and only three over Arkansas, Georgia, LSU, and South Carolina, etc ... Ten of the twelve SEC schools have been playing football for more than 110 years. Florida, whose football program turns 100 this year, has the shortest football history in the SEC. Notre Dame's program is only one year older than OSU's, 117.

8 of the 11 teams in the Big-10 (and Ohio State is one of them), Notre Dame, and 10 of the 12 teams in the SEC are separated by no more than seven years of football playing history.

good info....I didn't realize the programs were that close together...I thought we started playing footbal up north at least 10+ years b/4 the south picked it up....but I guess that is what I get for thinking :ohwell:

I'm guessing you're using Stassen/CFBDataWarehouses numbers?

Using Stassen's own numbers Oklahoma should actually be ahead of Bama and behind Texas now: 765-294-53 = .71178

Using CFBDataWarehouse's numbers as of the end of last season and then adding on this year's records. You could be right about OU jumping 'Bama...I didn't check for that.

www.cfbdatawarehouse.com now has all the regular season games from this season loaded. I was right about us jumping to #3 all-time in winning percentage, and Dryden was right about Oklahoma moving into 5th...

I'm pretty sure we're #1 since Woody took over in 1951. I'll concede the leather helmet era to scUM and NoD and claim the modern day title. :wink2:

Yea seriously. Congrats to scUM and Notre Lame for winning when they were the only 2 teams playing.

Any records pre-1965 are pretty much meaningless to me. So in that case, I guess Nebraska is the best team. But whatever. Cooper almost killed us, and sometimes suceeded.:wink2:
