Game Thread Ohio State @ Michigan State - 11/10/18, 12:00PM (FOX)

PRESSER BULLETS: URBAN MEYER RECAPS SATURDAY'S GAME AGAINST NEBRASKA, PREVIEWS THIS WEEK'S TRIP TO MICHIGAN STATE

A bullet-point recap of what he had to say:
  • Brendon White (defense), Keandre Jones (special teams) and Ohio State's offensive line were named players of the game for Saturday's win. J.K. Dobbins, Johnnie Dixon, Parris Campbell, Luke Farrell were the Buckeyes' other champions on offense, while Jonathon Cooper, Jashon Cornell, Dre'Mont Jones, Tuf Borland and Damon Arnette were the other champions on defense. Meyer said Mike Weber received an honorable mention, but wasn't named a champion because of his two fumbles. He said Farrell played "arguably his best game."
  • "Obviously a big one this week against Michigan State. Very strong rivalry, and we have a lot of respect for that team."
  • Meyer said he is seeing improvement as the season progresses from his linebackers, but "we still have far too many missed tackles." Said the Buckeyes had six or seven tackles for loss that they missed.
  • On Dwayne Haskins sliding, Meyer acknowledged that his slide on Saturday "wasn't the most graceful," but the coaches want him to get down as much as he can.
  • On Haskins' lack of running: "Those are the yards that you have to get from somewhere else if you're not getting them from the quarterback."
  • Meyer said there is a "big" impact from losing Nick Bosa on Ohio State's defense, but that happened awhile ago, and the Buckeyes had to move on.
  • Meyer said he thinks the team's leadership is "growing." Said the receivers, Isaiah Prince and Michael Jordan are leaders on offense, and "Dwayne's trying to get there." On defense, the Buckeyes need leaders to step up.
  • Meyer said the decision has not yet been made on whether Brendon White will start at safety on Saturday, but "he's certainly going to play. He's earned that right."
  • White's performance is making Meyer think about substituting in some more players who haven't played as much this year, but noted that the Buckeyes haven't had many opportunities to play their backups this season because of all the close games.
  • Meyer said the Buckeyes' shift from RPOs to more traditional running on Saturday resulted from the "hours and hours and hours" of work they spent working on the running game during the bye week.
  • Will what worked against Nebraska be sustainable against Michigan State's No. 1-ranked rushing defense? "It has to be," but said the scheme will change this week because Michigan State's defensive scheme is completely different.
  • Ohio State put together the package with Wyatt Davis as a sixth offensive lineman because they felt they had to get Davis on the field one way or another.
  • What stands out about Michigan State's defense? "Their boundary corner's an excellent player ... their defensive front's outstanding, and their 'backers are outstanding."

Two-Minute Drill: Urban Meyer Monday Updates – 11.5.18

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer spoke with reporters on Monday to provide some updates on his Buckeye football team. Where are the Buckeyes close to being where they need to be? Where are the concerns to residing? He also looked ahead a bit to this Saturday’s game at Michigan State. Here are the highlights.

+ Meyer began by reviewing the Champions.

+ Special teams were very solid on Saturday. They limited J.D. Spielman, who is a heck of a returner.

+ “Obviously a big one this week against Michigan State.” They are playing as good defensively as anybody in the country.

+ Meyer sees improvement from the linebackers. “We still have far too many missed tackles.” There were 5 of 6 missed tackles for loss.

+ You’d like to see Haskins get all he can on scrambling and then get down.

+ Haskins hasn’t been discouraged from running. They always want their quarterbacks to scramble. Meyer knew he wasn’t a great runner when he was recruiting him.

+ Losing Nick Bosa happened a while ago. The impact is big, but you’ve got to move on.

+ They go back and look at what the Urban Meyer offense did in the past to get the running game going when they didn’t have a running quarterback. Then you also rely on what Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson have done in similar situations. The red zone offense was much better and the one failure was an ill-advised throw for an interception.

+ Meyer thinks the secondary will be entirely healthy this week.

Well, the results say otherwise, at least for 2018:

- Dobbins had 163 yards, a 7.1 average, 3 TDs and a long of 42 yards. Those were all season highs.
- Weber had a 10.1 average, which was a season high, to go along with 91 yards and a long of 37, which were both good for his second-best game of the season.
Weber's average came from two runs: one via the full-field cut-back run he had for that 37 yards, where he nearly got caught for a loss, and a 27-yard run. That's 64 yards on two carries, and 33 yards on his other seven. Take away Dobbin's 42-yard TD run and his average drops by a yard and a half...that run, by the way, was with about 5 minutes left in the game when the Corn defense was getting tired. Also remember when Dobbins was stuffed on 4th and 2 on our first drive of the game. This was against a rush defense that is #81 in the country, on our turf with an extra week to rest and prepare.

A slight improvement from the three previous games? Maybe. Will it be good enough up at Sparty's house or when scum comes calling? I highly doubt it. Any improvement that was actually made this past Saturday will certainly need to be increased...

For sure--as I originally said, we'd be fools to think our run offense is going to go out there and push around the MSU's of the world without some help from the passing game opening up the running game. But our run offense did something right against Nebraska--if Dobbins hits for 160+ and Weber hits for 90+, I'd like our chances against anyone remaining on the schedule, including in the BTT and in a potential playoff run.

Unless a defensive light switch is magically flipped, they can run like the 1995 Huskers and I don't like their chances against any likely playoff team.

MSU has a couple of very good backs and shit for an OL. Problem for OSU "defense" is that you have to hold your breath even as MSU runs Dave Left and Dave Right because the OSU "D" is a threat to let up a home run on any play that requires gap soundness (which is any fucking play).

As this week goes on I am getting more and more pissed. Potentially, this should be a laugher. MSU has no offense and is susceptible to any accurate passing attack. Realistically, they'll be lucky as fuck to win but will most likely lose after giving up a ridiculous amount of points to Dantonio's otherwise moribund offense.

MSU offense averages 21.75 ppg in B1G play when you throw out high and low
OSU's offense averages 35.5 when you throw out best and worst in B1G play

I say they go for at least 28 and that is all it will take because I don't think a one dimensional offense can go for 30+ against Sparty's D. Coaching is just too good.

Hope to fuck I'm wrong but this defense has broken me.

Excerpts that I found both encouraging (moving forward) and alarming (looking back).

But it’s on to MSU.

Get back in the car and crank up the we don’t give a damn. I don’t want to picture Dantonio’s slingblade smirk while he reads this shit.

And further to this point: while MSU is #1 in the nation in rushing defense, they are ranked #98 in passing yards allowed.

On that note, just throw the ball every damn down. This is the first year I would ever say that, but it is not unfounded...don't try to force the issue against the top run defense in the country. I realize you can't throw every down, but just play to your strength.

This is the thing about MSU that makes us fans insane but also why Coach D is so successful. There is not much mystery about what MSU is going to do or when they will do it. They just dare you to beat their execution. Which seems like madness to me at times. Especially when it ain't working. But when it is working it is impossible to stop because you know what they are doing. No way to "adjust to stop" because you already knew what was coming. Coach D has that old school mind set and honestly when done right and with conviction it gives you 9-10 wins a season and once in awhile it will give you 11-12 wins. And that may not work at tOSU but at MSU the fans are just happy we don't suck anymore. Winning all the games you should and half the toss ups is the sign of a good program and is appreciated after many many years of being embarrassing.

I think I posted it already but if MSU and tOSU both play their "A" games OSU wins easy. But for some reason it seems OSU does not feel the need to play their "A" game this year. Maybe saving it for SCum.

I am likely taking OSU to cover in my weekly contest with some buddies. But it is really hard to pick games where both teams are so inconsistent. I would not be shocked if MSU won and I would not be shocked if OSU won by 20. I guess this is why the college game is so much fun. Well actually I would be shocked if OSU scored more than 30. MSU defense has been coming together nicely. And they seem to be peaking at the right time. Something has definitely "clicked" over the last few weeks for the Defense. The offense on the other hand has somehow gotten worse and worse each week. Or at least feels like that.

Both of the following are true:

1) We are an spoiled fan base that cries and whines every time a game is not played perfectly. We also think we are better offensive and defensive coordinators than the actual coaching staff

and

2) We have every right to expect better play and schemes than what we have been seeing this year given the talent on this team.

I liked this because it's true and I can relate, but then I had to unlike it because it's true and I can relate.
