Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

The double's point was a key advantage for the Buckeyes,
without it they would face must wins at 1, 3, 5, and 6.
Now any combo of 3 wins at 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 will seal the match.
I like our chances at 3, 5, and 6.
Chase at #1 is in a battle, but he is a strong finisher.
Marcan at #2 is facing a strong opponent--would love to see him claim a win there as well.

I think we will have to get our points from #5 and #6 and hope that Chase or Justin can come through for :osu:

Novak secured that #6 point.
Kronauge won a tough 1st set tie breaker (10-8) at #3.
Buchanan came back strong to win the 2nd set and even the match at #1.
Bucks really need Allare at #5 and either Kro at #3 or Buchanan at #1.

Looks like Buchanan has put the hammer down at first single's racing out to a 3-0 lead.

Great comeback Chase.
Unusual for Allare to be the last one off the court, he is usually the first.
Come on Matt, bring home one more win for a 5-2 victory.
Looks like #5 singles was suspended, match finished with Buckeyes winning by a 4-2 score.

Grace...

I noted the following:
The computers do the rankings
Mississippi is the last OOC opponent
Number 17 Illinois is the 2nd highest ranked Big 10 school

What is the likelihood of earning the 2 or 3 spot in the rankings so as to not have to play Viriginia until a potential finals match? It seems with the low rankings of the teams OSU has left that the computers would not ultimately rank OSU at #2 or #3.

On the one hand if the computers were consistent, then based on the last ITA rankings released, and on the remaining tOSU schedule, its not looking good that tOSU receives a #2 or 3 seed in the NCAA tourney right now.
As OSU/D notes, there are not many ranked teams left on the schedule (#17 Illinois, #32 Wisconsin) for tOSU to potentially gain good wins and accumulate enough points to improve their computer ranking.
Unless two of Tennessee, Texas or USC loses, tOSU will not likely move to the 3 seed, according to the most recent rankings and trends of the ITA computers. :(

These are the ITA rankings from April 6 (includes matches through 4/4):

Rank. School . . . avg. points. . . . l w rank.
1. . . Virginia . . . . . 82.24 . . . . . . . .1
2. . . Ohio State . . 74.39 . . . . . . . . 2
3. . . USC . . . . . . . 73.60 . . . . . . . 4
4. . . U. Tenn. . . . . 72.68. . . . . . . . 3
5. . . Texas . . . . . . 71.96. . . . . . . . 5
6. . . Florida. . . . . . 66.2. . . . . . . . . 6
7. . . Stanford . . . . 58.03 . . . . . . . .7
8. . . Georgia. . . . . 57.19 . . . . . . . . 8
9. . . Baylor . . . . . .56.62. . . . . . . . 11
10. . UCLA . . . . . . 55.72. . . . . . . . . 9

During the week of 4/5-11, according to the ITA results site
tOSU had wins vs. #25 Michigan, #36 Notre Dame, unranked Mich St. and Toledo.
Tennessee had wins vs. #6 Florida and #49 South Carolina.
Texas had wins vs. #34 Tulsa and #11 Baylor.
USC had a win vs. #28 Arizona.

And here are the rankings from April 13 with team records as of 4/14:

Rank. School (rec). . . . . avg. points. . . last week rank.
1. . . Virginia (31-1). . . . . 80.72 . . . . . . . . 1
2, . . Tennessee (22-1). . . 76.81 . . . . . . . .4
3. . . Texas (21-2). . . . . . 74.76 . . . . . . . . 5
4. . . U. S. C (19-2). . . . . .73.81. . . . . . . . 3
5. . . Ohio State (26-1). . . 71.01. . . . . . . . 2
6. . . Florida (16-3). . . . . . 69.52. . . . . . . . 6
7. . . Stanford (17-5) . . . . 59.26 . . . . . . . .7
8. . . Kentucky (19-7). . . . 56.88 . . . . . . . 11
9. . . Texas A&M (20-4). . . 56.16. . . . . . . .12
10. . Georgia (17-5) . . . . . 55.85. . . . . . . . 8

So on the one hand if the top 5 win out it would appear based on a "consistency expected from computer rankings" that tOSU would be assigned the 5 seed.

On the other hand, based on the demonstrated inconsistency of the ITA computer scheme, we may be in for a wild ride!

I would think that the win over Ole Miss would 3help the computers think a little bit better and maybe the next time the ranking come out I would think we would certainly be rated higher than #5:io:

According to Bigballin last year, the computer formulas factored in a team's top 9 quality wins. I can't recall if teams were "punished" for losses. It appears from the w/l records of Texas and USC that losses are not counted or teams are only slightly punished for losses. Texas with 2 losses (vs. Tennessee and VA) USC with 2 losses (vs. Duke and Tenn)
tOSU has one loss, (vs. #1 Virginia).
Looking at tOSU's top 9 quality wins, U Miss at #18 will add to the top quality wins in next week's rankings, replacing TSUN at #25,
and a win vs. Illinois would replace a #22 with a #17.

These are the 9 quality tOSU wins at present:
#6 Florida
#8 Kentucky
#9 Texas A & M
#10 Georgia
#15 Louisville (twice)
#18 Mississippi
#19 North Carolina
#22 Pepperdine

these are the 9 quality wins for Texas:
#4 U. S. C.
#7 Stanford
#9 Texas A & M
#11 Baylor
#13 California
#14 Duke
#16 Texas Tech
#20 Oklahoma
#22 Pepperdine

These are the 9 quality wins for USC:
#7 Stanford
#10 Georgia
#12 UCLA (twice)
#13 California
#22 Pepperdine
#23 Wake Forest
#24 Washington
#28 Arizona

tOSU to host Indiana at the Stickney tennis center Friday at 3 pm.

The Buckeye men's tennis program will return home from a victory in Oxford, Miss. to host Big Ten opponent, Indiana Hoosiers Friday, 3 pm.
The match is scheduled to be played at the Stickney Tennis center (next to the WHAC) but will be moved indoors in the case of bad weather.
tOSU will be looking to extend their Big Ten consecutive win streak to 60 matches against the Hoosiers. On the line also is a consecutive home winning streak of 106 matches, marking a span of over 7 years.

Information from the official site about the Hoosiers:
THE INDIANA HOOSIERS
Indiana, polled 41st in the nation, is 12-6 overall with a 3-3 record in Big Ten play. Last time out, the Hoosiers lost a 4-3 match to Minnesota April 11 in Bloomington. Indiana has defeated Iowa (April 10), Purdue (April 2) and Northwestern (March 28) this season in league competition. Along with the Gophers, the Hoosiers have lost to Illinois (April 4) and Wisconsin (March 26).

INDIANA IN THE RANKINGS
The Hoosiers have one doubles pair ranked in the latest ITA polls. Lachlan Ferguson and Josh MacTaggart are No. 48 with a 9-2 overall record this season.

Buckeye fans may support their team at the Stick or Varsity Indoor Tennis Center, Henderson Rd. Admission is free.
Match updates will also be available on line through Livestats.
Go Bucks!

Ohio State hosted Indiana Friday night and handed the #41 ranked Hoosiers a 7-0 loss. The Buckeye victory marked the 60th straight Big Ten win and the 107th consecutive home victory.
No other team in any Big Ten sport has as many consecutive home wins as the current men's tennis team.
The Indiana match was moved to the Varsity Indoor Tennis facility due to inclement weather.
the Buckeyes made quick work of the doubles point sweeping each match. Chase Buchanan and Dino Marcan defeated another ranked team at 1st doubles, increasing their point totals toward a ranking that may qualify them to be seeded at the NCAA double's tournament in May.
The home courts were kind to the Buckeye single's players as Matt Allare and Dino Marcan finished quickly. Sophomore Devin McCarthy proved his #117 ranking was no fluke as he sealed the Buckeye victory by claiming the 4th point at # 6 singles. McCarthy remains undefeated in singles for the Buckeyes in 2010.
Buchanan, Kronauge, and Novak finished out the sweep of Indiana.
Next up for the Buckeyes is Big Ten co-leader and #17 ranked Illinois Sunday at noon at the Stickney Tennis Center.
Go Bucks!
