Georgia Men's Tennis -- Ohio State vs Georgia

Buckeyes win! Final victory by a 4-2 margin, and sending 7th ranked Georgia to only its 2nd home court loss in the last 50 matches.

As shared earlier the Doubles point was captured when Buchanan/Marcan posted an 8-4 victory at #2 doubles and Kronauge and Novak capped a 9-8 tie breaker finish at #3.

In singles play Coach Tucker put Chase Buchanan (#17 ITA rank) at #2 singles vs. Georgia's highest ranked player Garrapiz (#18 ITA rank).
Buchanan dominated the match by a 6-3, 6-1 score.

At #1 singles, Justin Kronauge (#26 ITA rank) was matched up vs. Schnugg (#96 ITA rank) and Justin proved his value again by a 6-3, 6-2 score to put Buckeyes ahead by a 3-0 count.

The 4th and final point would prove elusive.
Balazs Novak playing at 4th singles would lose in straight sets, 6-7, 2-6.
Shuhei Uzawa at #5 would also lose in straight sets, 2-6, 0-6.

Matt Allare would Seal the victory at #6 singles by a 6-4, 6-2 score.
Dino Marcan vs. Jamie Hunt 3rd single's match was suspended when the match was decided.

With his victory Justin Kronauge took sole possession of third on the program's career singles wins list with 130.

Today's match was played at the site of the NCAA championships that the Buckeyes hope to play this May.

gracelhink....why wouldnt the highest ranked players from each team play in the #1 singles position? Also, what is tOSU's current rank?

You ask an intersting question about why the top ranked player is not playing #1 singles. Sometimes the higher ranked player is not the best player on a team.
Other times there is another motive.

I don't know if this may be the motive or strategy for Georgia, but often times a coach will "sandbag" his lineup to sacrifice one spot/player in order to create better matchups down the line.

If Georgia put their lineup out with Schnugg (ITA 96) at #1 and Garrapiz (ITA 18) at #2 in hopes of sacrificing 1st singles and getting a win at #2, it looks like Tucker was savvy to what was happening, and countered by putting Kronauge at #1 and Buchanan at #2.
It worked in favor of the Buckeyes as both Kronauge and Buchanan won their matches. These two matches would make the difference in the final as tOSU lost at #4 and #5.
If Georgia would have won at #2 the match would have been 3-3 with Marcan needing to win at 3rd for the victory.

ITA team rankings as of March 23.

Virginia is #1
Tennessee #2
tOSU bumps up to #3.
Texas is #4
University of Spoiled Children is #5.
Florida is #6
Georgia is #7

Other Big Ten schools.
#11 Illinois
#28 TSUN
#34 Wisconsin
#39 Minnesota
#40 Indiana
#45 Northwestern

I smell a sweep :osu:against the pitiful Lions and the more pitiful Vikings

Hard to call a team that is 12-3 pitiful.
But if your nose smells sweep, it will have to be a sweep!

Straight set wins by Buchanan, Allare, McCarthy, Kronauge,
Novak, and Marcan for the 102 consecutive home win and 55th straight Big 10 victory.

ITA tennis ream rankings were released this afternoon.
Based on the victory over Georgia, tOSU jumped Tennessee into 2nd place in the NCAA. Vols and Bucks have one loss each (both vs. #1 ranked Virginia at the ITA indoor team championships in Feb).
This rankings race should be interesting throughout the year and will be significant for the team seedings when the NCAA team championships are held in Georgia in May.
Would love to see UVA and USC as #1 & #4 seeds matched up in the semis.

ITA Team rankings released 3/30/10

Will update the NCAA rankings for OSU's single's players and double's teams as they are posted.
