Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

On an historic night, 225 great fans of OSU arrived at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center to witness the 100th consecutive home match victory, a new standard for all Big Ten sports.
The winning streak began April 5, 2003, when the Buckeyes defeated Purdue at home by a 5-2 score.
100 home matches later Purdue would also be in Columbus for the opening Big Ten scheduled match.
On the night the Buckeye doubles tandems each prevailed with relative ease.
The #1 pair of Chase Buchanan and Dino Marcan finished first by an 8-2 margin. The #2 and #3 pairs of Allare and Uzawa, and Captains Justin Kronauge and Steven Williams together quickly dispatched their Boilermaker opponents.
In the single's competition:
#4 Matt Allare won the Buckeye's 2nd point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
#1 Chase Buchanan finished next with an identical 6-1, 6-0 score.
#6 Freshman Devin McCarthy provided the 4th Buckeye point, sealing the 100th consecutive home victory with a final score of 6-1. 6-0.
#5 Shuhei Uzawa claimed his match by a 6-2, 6-2 score.
#3 Justin Kronauge was victorious by a 6-1, 6-2 final.
#2 Dino Marcan closed out the 7-0 team victory by a score of 7-6, 6-3.
The victory over Purdue also continued a Big Ten winning streak that has reached 54 consecutive victories, and overall this victory marked a school record 97th straight regular season (non-tournament) match win streak.
In the match Justin Kronauge left his mark in the OSU history books as he moved past Roger Smith into sole possession of 3rd place with his 127th singles victory of his Buckeye career.
Congratulations Justin and Go Bucks!

Buckeyes Make History with 100 Consecutive Home Wins

Soon after I put up my amateurish account of the OSU victory,
the Official OSU tennis site wrote the following report, (it makes my eyes sweat a bit to ponder the significance of this historic night and this special team).

OSU tennis site

Streaks, streaks, streaks! The Buckeyes own so many streaks right now, it is a little challenging to keep up.
When the Ohio State men's tennis team last lost a home match the date was April 5, 2003. Exactly 2,532 days ago the Buckeyes dropped a 5-2 decision to Big Ten conference rival Illinois. No one can be quite sure what head coach Ty Tucker said to inspire that squad and future teams to come, but nonetheless it worked. One hundred consecutive home wins later, Ohio State has accomplished one of the most impressive feats in all of athletics.
The fourth-ranked Buckeyes (13-1; 1-0 Big Ten) opened their league schedule with a 7-0 win against No. 60 Purdue Friday night and in front of 225 friends, family and fans who wanted to witness history, earned their 100th-straight win in Columbus. No other Big Ten team in any sport has accomplished this feat as Ohio State has won all its home matches the past six seasons.
Also, in the mix of those 100 straight home victories is a 54 consecutive match winning streak against Big Ten opponents. These are numbers that may not be mentioned by the major primetime sports shows, but let it be noted now.

Chase Buchanan, a sophomore on the No. 4 Ohio State men's tennis team, was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the second-consecutive week the conference announced Tuesday.
The honor brings the Buckeyes' total to seven this season, which leads the league. Buchanan, a New Albany, Ohio, native has four such honors in 2010 to lead the Scarlet and Gray. Teammates Dino Marcan has two accolades (Jan. 19 and Feb. 16) and Justin Kronauge earned the honor Feb. 2.

The ITA released their weekly rankings, including teams, singles' players and doubles' teams today.
Buckeyes again were ranked as the 4th best team in the NCAA, trailing #1 Virginia, #2 Tennessee, and #3 USC.
Of interest for the Bucks, Georgia jumped from #9 to #6 in the rankings. tOSU will travel to Athens to face the Bulldogs next Thursday, 3/25/10.

Representing the Buckeyes in the top 125 of ITA singles' rankings were:
#117, Shuhei Uzawa down from #91 on 3/2.
#74, Dino Marcan down from #47.
#26, Justin Kronauge up from #30 on 3/2 after being unranked on 1/5/10.
#17, Chase Buchanan up from #23 on 3/2 and from #103 on 1/5/10.

Making their debut in the 3/16 ITA double's rankings are the tandem of Chase Buchanan and Dino Marcan at #43 (a rather impressive ranking since they have only played together 4 times in competition with 3 wins).

Ohio State will look to extend the 100 home match winning streak Thursday when it hosts Detroit Mercy at 5 p.m. The match is scheduled to be played at the Buckeyes' outdoor venue, Stickney Tennis Center

Go Bucks!

101st consecutive home victory in the record books

The OSU men's tennis team hosted the Detroit Titans (6-5) in the first outdoor match of the season at the Stickney courts today.
Their efforts extended the Big Ten best record for consecutive home victories to 101 with a 7-0 team victory.
Livestats
In a match that lasted only 2 hours, the #4 ranked Buckeyes captured the double's point with victories at #3 Justin Kronauge and Shuhei Uzawa and #2 Balazs Novak and Dino Marcan.

OSU vs. SEC showdown this week!

Sometimes I have to marvel at the accomplishments of this OSU team under the leadership of Ty Tucker.
Dino Marcan the #24 ranked junior in the world signed with the Buckeyes in November because of the reputation of Tucker.
The same story is told of the #1 American high school recruit in 2009, Chase Buchanan.
Credit Andy Geiger for hiring Jim Tressell and Thad Matta, but do not overlook that in 1999 he took a huge gamble in the hiring of an assistant coach with 2 years of assistant coaching experience to pilot the Buckeyes.
What makes Tucker a winner?
He is an effective recruiter but also an exceptional teacher/motivator/coach.
From his biography
Tucker's style of coaching fosters positive attitudes by providing an environment conducive to improvement. Tucker asks his players to perform on-court drills with focus and 100 percent effort. Intense practices are combined with tough work-out sessions both in the weight room and on the track.
Before taking over the Ohio State head coaching job, Tucker served as the Buckeyes' assistant coach for two seasons. He was responsible for U.S. recruiting and on-court development. Tucker was the main force behind the recruitment of both Phil Metz and Ng.

IMHO the weight room and conditioning has made a major difference in the performance of Chase Buchanan this year. Buchanan struggled last season, but has moved from #106 in the NCAA to the #17 ranked single's player as of March 16.
The close of this recent article summarizes the accomplishments under Head Coach Ty Tucker.
From the official site:

The fourth-ranked Ohio State men's tennis team will travel South to face a pair of SEC opponents in No. 55 LSU and No. 6 Georgia this week. The Buckeyes will meet the Tigers at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Baton Rouge, La., before traveling to Athens to take on the Bulldogs at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Ohio State (14-1; 1-0 Big Ten) has won six-consecutive matches . . .
Ohio State owns a perfect 12-0 record at home this season with five victories over Top 25 opponents. . . .
Ohio State extended its home win streak to 101 consecutive matches.
It has been more than 2,500 days since the Buckeyes lost a home match. No other Big Ten team in any sport has won as many consecutive matches/games at home than the Buckeyes. . . .
Buckeyes have now been ranked in the Top 25 in the ITA standings for 10 consecutive years. . .
The Buckeyes have been polled in the ITA Top 10 for 103 consecutive matches. That streak began March 7, 2006. Perfect at home, the Buckeyes definitely will be tested this week as they compete for the first time on the road in dual play. . .
Louisiana State, ranked No. 55 in the latest ITA standings, is 4-7 overall this season.
Georgia, ranked sixth in the nation, is 12-3 overall. . . .
Georgia is 3-3 vs. nationally-ranked opponents and has key wins against then-No. 11 Ole Miss, No. 6 Kentucky, and then-No. 25 Alabama. In conference play, the Bulldogs are a perfect 4-0, downing Kentucky, Alabama, Vanderbilt and Auburn.

Won the Doubles point and the match, though it was tough.

Marcan and Uzawa both dropped straight set matches at 3 and 4, to make the score 2-1 in favor of LSU.
Seemed like Dino and Shuhei never got untracked until late in the 2nd sets and couldn't break back enough to make up for falling behind.
Balazs Novak came through at 5th singles with a straight set win, followed closely by Matt Allare at 6th singles in straight sets.
Justin Kronauge earned the 4th point and Buckeye victory at 2nd singles with a 6-4, 6-1 sweep.
Congratulations Bucks and get pumped for thursday!

Good start we are up 1-0 after doubles!!

Huge point there!

#1 doubles dropped their match to the Dawgs 8-4,

#2 pulled through 8-4.

Looked like 3rd doubles (Novak and Kronauge) claimed the tie breaker at 8-8 to capture the double's point for the good guys.

The live video feed is showing raindrops on the camera and wet courts-match will probably be moving indoors. :(

Doesn't look like Georgia has an indoor video feed. Oh well.

Go Bucks!
