COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State already has one of the top recruiting classes in the country and it just got better as Director of Tennis Ty Tucker announced the signing of Justin Boulais for the 2019 class and will start with the program this fall.

“We are very excited to have Justin join the Buckeye family,” said Tucker. “He is an incredible tennis player with a bright future and we look for him to be an All-American and a Scholar-Athlete during his time in the Scarlet and Gray. He is a super aggressive left-hander that understands how to hold serve at a young age and he has been coached very well by his parents. His sister was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2019 for the women’s team here, so Justin has some work to do for bragging rights.”

The Mississauga, Ontario native joins a class that includes blue chip recruits Cannon Kingsley, Robert Cash and JJ Mercer. The 5-11 lefty won the U18 Canadian Nationals single title in 2018 and added a U18 indoor doubles title as well. He advanced to the round of 16 at a pair of Futures events in 2018 and recently reached the round of 16 of the singles draw and the quarterfinals of the doubles draw at the ATP Challenger event in Winnipeg this past week. Thanks to that performance, he has risen to a career-high 545 in the ATP World Rankings.

Boulais claimed three U18 doubles titles in 2017 while winning the singles crown as the U16 National Selection Indoor #1. He was also a member of Canada’s U16 Junior Davis Cup Team.

Boulais sister Isabelle had a tremendous year for the Buckeye women’s team last year as she was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earned a spot in the NCAA singles championship.

Good news on the loaded recruiting class.
I have been scratching my head trying to imagine how coach will distribute 4 1/2 scholarships to a full roster and 4 blue chip 2019 recruits.
Alex kobelt graduated and will grad transfer to another school.
JJ has hired an agent. Very grateful for a stellar career for JJ Wolf and his contributions for 3 big ten championships and an indoor title. Will miss the anchor at the top of the lineup, However...
Wolf is deserving to get paid instead of returning his earnings and tournament prize money.

I really do not understand why Tucker would let his #4 singles player and #2 doubles team player from last season transfer so easily just because of some incoming freshman. I have not talked to the family for some years now and maybe Alex wants to transfer for academic reasons but I highly doubt that and giving Tucker the benefit of the doubt when saying that.

I wondered about that too. There is a limited number of scholarships for the tennis team. The cost of "grad school" isn't cheap. Could it be that since Alex Kobelt actually graduated, Tucker isn't offering him whatever scholarship that he had; and Kobelt just wants to transfer to a school that will offer him some scholarship $$$ to help defer his cost of "grad school"?

Grad school tuition/room & board/books is over $31K per year.

I know that the tennis team has a limited number of scholarships but I do not think that they give out whole scholarships to one player. Scholarships for nonrevenue teams are usually divided up into 1/4, 1/2, etc. plus I am not sure that they actually go by dollar amounts rather than percentages. I would think that Alex would probably play #3 singles next year ffor Ohio State but not anymore iif he in fact does transfer. I guess Peter must have taken all of the money that Tucker wanted to give th Kobelt family..
