Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Pretty exciting matches coming with a chance to upgrade the header to read… 14 straight Big Ten titles!
Preview of this weekend from the official site
  • [*]The Buckeyes have a chance to clinch its 14th consecutive Big Ten title this week when it closes out the regular season with matches against Purdue and Indiana
[*]A win on Friday evening vs. Purdue would give the Buckeyes at least a share of the Big Ten Championship and would secure the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
[*]The Buckeyes have not lost to Purdue under Ty Tucker, winning all 20 matches since 2000
[*]Sunday’s match with Indiana will be Senior Day as Ohio State will honor Martin Joyce and Hunter Tubert following the match.
[*]Joyce earned All-America honors last season when he and Mikael Torpegaard finished runner-up in the NCAA Doubles Championship. The Hinsdale, Ill., native has been a mainstay in the Buckeyes’ lineup ever since he stepped foot on campus. He has more than 100 doubles wins and is just five wins shy of 200 combined wins for his career..
[*]Tubert is one of the best doubles players in the country. He was in the top-10 nationally last year with 31 doubles wins and he has already matched that total this year. He has not lost a doubles match this yet this spring as he is 22-0. His next doubles win will be the 100th of his career.
[*]After losing the first two matches of Tucker’s tenure to Indiana, the Buckeyes have reeled-off 20 in a row vs. the Hoosiers.
[*]On the strength of the win over No. 14 Illinois, the Buckeyes jump back up No. 1 in the ITA rankings. This will be the seventh week this season the team has been ranked No. 1. They also spent seven weeks in the top spot in 2014.
[*]Of course JJ Wolf remains No. 1 in the singles rankings as he is now 27-0 following his win over No. 6 Aleks Kovacevic.
[*]John McNally picked up his eighth win over a ranked opponent on Sunday and bumped up to No. 23. Kyle Seelig continues to roll as he is ranked No. 56 and James Trotter checks in at No. 103.
[*]In doubles, Martin Joyce and Hunter Tubert remain in the top-10 at No. 9 while Joyce and Wolf are at No. 30. Seelig and Alex Kobelt are just ahead of them at No. 28 and Kobelt and Trotter jump up 10 spots to No. 45.

Lots of returning talent, plus 2019 recruiting class that may be the best class Tucker has ever brought to OSU!
That may be disputed since Wolf and McNally were technically of the graduating class of 2017.
The Universal Tennis Ranking (UTR) is not a perfect guide for comparing relative strength however it is the standard.
Present Buckeye UTR rankings are: JJ Wolf (14.91) 2. John McNally (13.73) 3. Kyle Seelig (13.88) 4. Martin Joyce (13.80) 5. Tim Seibert (13.17) 6. James Trotter (13.37) 7. Alex Kobelt (13.42) 8. Hunter Tubert (13.45)
Incoming Freshman class (based on UTR) is led by TRN blue chips Cannon Kingsley of New York (13.94), Robert Cash of C'bus (12.66), and John Mercer of WV (12.72). Kingsley is the real deal.
Re. chances of everyone returning...
Wolf is good enough to play on the money circuit yesterday, if he returns next year it will say much!
McNally and Seelig are #1 and #2 next year unless Kingsley is as advertised.
I love how Kobelt has developed, he will just get better for his last year. Trotter has the weapons and will get developed in power and endurance under this program, but Siebert is a head scratcher.

Ohio State has had some really good tennis players in fairly recent years,i.e. like Fernandez, Kronauge, Metz, Buchanan, Kobelt, Rola, and Torpegaard, etc.

Blaze Rola has won $743K playing professionally; however, nobody from "Ohio State" has really "killed it" on the pro tour. Wolf may have the most potiental (i.e. upside) though, at 20 he definitely hasn't peaked yet.

I know it's hard to compare a player from a decade (or more) ago with one today; but, how do you think Wolf stacks up against them? Do you think he is the all time best tennis player to ever play at Ohio State?

2019 BIG TEN MEDAL OF HONOR FINALISTS

The Ohio State Big Ten Medal of Honor finalists for 2019 on the women’s side are Lauren Boyle (ice hockey), Alyssa Hoying (synchronized swimming), Devon Kerr (soccer), Lilli Piper (softball)and Karrington Winters (track). For the men, the finalists are Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger (fencing), Cole Gorski (track), Mason Jobst (ice hockey), Martin Joyce (tennis) and Sanil Thomas (volleyball).

Martin Joyce has been a mainstay in Ty Tucker’s lineup the last four years. A two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and 2018 doubles All-American, Joyce is approaching 200 wins in his career. He will likely finish in the top-10 for most combined wins by any Buckeye. He was the Midwest Region Freshman of the Year after going undefeated in singles match his first season. In addition to leading the Buckeyes to deep runs in the NCAA tournament the last four years, he is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.
