#1. UCLA (24-1, 84.88 points)
#2. Georgia (22-4, 77.36 points)
#3, Virginia (24-0, 77.32 points)

#4. USC (23-4, 70.91 points)
#5. OSU (31-2, 70.26 points)

Let me get this straight...the computer thinks that a 4-loss Georgia team is better than an undefeated Virginia team?

Yes.
That is how the ITA formula is projected to rank the teams May 2.
However using the word "thinks" to describe the computer function leads me to believe that you sir, have a lisp.

The NCAA will broadcast live at 5 pm the selection show for the 16 regions for the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament.

NCAA video Link

#1 seed tOSU will serve as a host site and the NCAA could possibly send these teams to c'bus:

#2 seed Notre Dame (17-32 bracket);

#3 seed North Carolina State (33-48 bracket);

#4 seed Cleveland State (49-64 bracket).

If these are the selections, Buckeyes would face off with CSU Friday, May 10,
2nd round matches will be played Saturday May 11.

Winner of the region advances to the championship round of 16 at Champaign-Urbana May 17-20.

Following the team tournament the top 64 single's players and top 32 double's teams play May 21-25 for individual titles.

Trio of Buckeyes Selected to Compete in NCAA Singles, Doubles Championships

Peter Kobelt, Blaz Rola and Connor Smith, members of the No. 4 Ohio State men?s tennis team, were selected to compete in the field of 64 singles players and 32 doubles tandems at the 2013 NCAA Division I Men?s Tennis Championships the NCAA selection committee announced Wednesday. Kobelt was the Big Ten Conference?s automatic singles qualifier, while Rola was an at-large selection. Kobelt and Smith will pair up in the doubles bracket as the league?s automatic qualifier. All three Buckeyes will begin competition May 22, following the NCAA team championship at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex and Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill., on the University of Illinois campus.

Ohio State will serve as one of 16 hosts of the first and second rounds of the team portion of the NCAA tennis championships starting May 10. Notre Dame and Washington will open the Columbus regional at 10 a.m. before the fifth-seed Buckeyes and Cleveland State play at 1 p.m. The winners of the opening-round matches will meet in the second round at noon May 11. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students with a valid student ID and children. All matches are scheduled to take place at Ohio State?s outdoor facility, the Varsity Tennis Courts located on Olentangy River Road. In the case of inclement weather, matches will be moved indoors at the Varsity Tennis Center on 880 W. Henderson Road.

The No. 8 seed, Kobelt is the 11th Buckeye under head coach Ty Tucker to earn a bid into the NCAA singles championship. A redshirt junior from New Albany, Ohio, Kobelt is making his first appearance in the singles tournament after posting a 31-7 overall record, including a 17-4 record in dual play. In the Big Ten, Kobelt, a two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection, was 8-1, compiling a 7-1 and 10-3 record at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Kobelt posted an impressive fall season in 2012, winning the USTA/ITA Midwest Region singles title and finishing as the runner-up at the ITA All-American championships.

Rola is making his third-consecutive appearance in the NCAA singles championship, advancing as far as the semifinals a season ago and the quarterfinals as a freshman. A three-time First Team All-Big Ten recipient, Rola has just one loss on the season compared to 23 wins. The junior from Ptuj, Slovenia, is 15-1 at No. 1 singles and 8-0 at the No. 2 position.

Playing majority of the time at No. 1 doubles, Kobelt and Smith, a senior from Tampa, Fla., own a 22-3 overall record, including a 21-2 ledger in the dual play. The duo also posted a 10-1 mark in the Big Ten. Kobelt and Smith carried an 18-2 record on court No. 1, while collecting three wins (3-0) at No. 2 doubles. Under Tucker, Kobelt and Smith are the 11th Buckeye tandem to qualify for the NCAA doubles championship.

The ITA computer rankings came out yesterday and they did indeed have a 4 loss Georgia team ranked higher by the computer formula than an undefeated UVirginia team.

Rank. Avg. .School. . . . .Previous
1...84.88. .UCLA. . . . . . . .1
2...77.37. .Univ Georgia. . . .3
3...77.32. .Univ Virginia. . . .2
4...70.92. .Univ S. Cal. . . . .5
5...70.26. .Ohio State Univ. . .4

After these top 5 ranked teams there is a drop off in the rest of the field.
Re. the outrageous computer love for Georgia, the NCAA tournament selection committee did "correct" the computer formulas obvious flaw, and chose to place Virginia on the #2 seed line and Georgia as the #3 seed.
There is not a lot of difference between being selected as the #2 or #3 seed--#2 potentially draws the #7 seed in the quarters, #3 matches up with #6.
However by getting the #2 seed, Virginia avoids the 3 strongest teams in the draw, i.e. has a virtual walk into the finals...
The other side of the bracket, is stacked absolutely loaded..
#4 seed USC (2 injured players will be returning to the lineup for the champions of the last 4 NCAA tournaments),
#1 UCLA PAC 12 champions, only loss to USC, but defeated Trojans 3 times.
#9 seed but scary with upset potential Duke (lost 4-3 to UVA) and
#5 seed Ohio State, who defeated Georgia (5-2), and lost a tight battle with UVA 4-3 at the ITA indoor semifinals.
i.e. any of these three or four have or would handle Georgia and potentially offer the only serious opposition to Virginia's juggernaut.

Hypothetically, if the computer formulas were replaced by human polls,
I believe most tennis pollsters would align a top 5 ranking to look like this:
1. Virginia (24-0).
2. UCLA (24-1).
3. Ohio State (30-2).
4. USC (22-4).
5. Georgia (22-4).

Poll seedings would create a draw for the NCAA tournament that takes on a much more OSU friendly opportunity to advance.
Have to believe that Coach Tucker will rally this team and open the eyes of the tennis elite to the quality of player development that is happening in c'bus.

Just sayin': The B1G is well represented in the NCAA tournament:

Ohio State
Michigan State
Northwestern
Illinois
Minnesota
and scUM

Probably not too bad for a "cold weather conference".:tongue2:

If all the seeded teams continue to advance; at Urbana #5 Ohio State would have to beat #12 aTm, #4 USC, #1 UCLA, and then #2 UVa to win the championship. :yow1:

At least none of the contenders have a "home court advantage".

Might be a bit difficult comparing 'winter' indoor tennis to 'winter' baseball. Gracelhink would probably be able to help me out...was wondering, does the NCAA have an 'indoor' season and an 'outdoor' season, like track? Or do they play indoor until the courts aren't being squeegeed off between points for the matches?

Or are all matches required to be played outdoors? I'd hate to be serving in March (in like a lamb, out like a lion) winds for match point (not that I'd put the ball in play anyway)....but inside would be fine. Also, what is surface? Clearly not grass or clay, but the 'composite' that I see so much of?

If there are four teams ranked higher than tOSU, after what I've seen on TV, they've gotta be [Mark May]-eating good. Tennis is a way of life in SoCal, and on the east coast as well, but going unbeaten or one loss is huge. Here's hoping that tOSU notches some big wins (still smart from USC beating us in teh finals), this collection of players has got to be one of the strongest top to bottom in OSU history......

Good call on the challenging task the Buckeyes face to take a run to the championship. There are days off between matches which will help the team recover after potential battles in the 16s, quarters, and semis.

Also agree with your elation re. the cold weather conference representation. It is overall good news because the B1G placed six teams in the 64 tourney field.

However one regional host B1G team suggests the chance that many survive to the championship round of 16 is extremely low.
Very troubling for Illinois who will be host of the NCAA championships at Champaign, but will need an upset at Vanderbilt to earn an invitation to their own dance.
TSUN may have a shot but they would also need a strong performance and upset at Kentucky.

Buckeyes won the double's point in their first round NCAA tournament match vs. Cleveland State.
In the single's portion, #1, Rola, #3 Smith, #5 Diaz and #6 Smith have posted first set victories.
With a win today the Buckeyes would advance to face Washington who upset Notre Dame 4-3 this morning.
