Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

The recap of the 140th consecutive Home win vs. UNOH from the official OSU tennis site.
Link

The No. 2 Ohio State men?s tennis team concluded a three-match weekend Sunday when it beat the University of Northwestern Ohio, 4-0, at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Scarlet and Gray will now have a week off before heading south where they will play LSU at 3 p.m. March 19 and Georgia at 2:30 p.m. March 21. ...

For the 18th time this season, Ohio State opened its match with the doubles point win, this time vs. UNOH. An 8-2 victory by Connor Smith and Peter Kobelt over Jeff Brown and Juan Cardenas at the No. 1 position preceded a shutout victory by Blaz Rola and Ille Van Engelen. Starting at No. 2 doubles, Rola and Van Engelen held Alexander Hager and Sam Rutter scoreless to lift the Buckeyes to an early 1-0 advantage.
Moving on to the singles competition, Smith relinquished only three points in his 6-1, 6-2 win vs. Cardenas on court four. Hunter Callahan, who played his second-consecutive match of the day and season, had a successful Sunday as he beat Rutter 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Finally, Nelson Vick earned an impressive victory over Emin Alpan 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to seal Ohio State?s win.

The ITA reseased their weekly team rankings and the Buckeyes retained a strong grip on the #2 position.
Surprisingly Virginia dropped from #3 to #5 in the ITA!
Its a very close contest for the 3rd spot in the team rankings and the coveted #3 seed in the NCAA tournament.
The Buckeye win in February over Pepperdine looms large as they made a big jump into the top ten.
The trip south into SEC country will be critical for the Scarlet and Gray as they will have a show down with #3 ranked Gerogia on March 21. Bulldogs have had this match circled on their calendars knowing they could gain critical computer points with a w over the Buckeyes.
Lots of concerns over the southern swing. Not just a hostile environment, but Ty will have to transition the team from indoor only play and get some exposure to outdoor tennis conditions quickly or the matches at LSU and UGa could get out of control.
Here are this weeks team rankings.

You'd think that somebody writing a tennis article for the official site would be aware of the difference between points and games. :!

Chase Buchanan repeats as the Big 10 athlete of the week.
Bucks have won the honor for 5 consecutive weeks.
From the official tennis site.

? Chase Buchanan, a senior on the No. 2 Ohio State men?s tennis team, was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, the conference announced Tuesday. The honor is his fifth this season and 15th of his career.

Including the fall season, the Buckeyes have won 11 of the 19 conference athlete of the week honors awarded this season. Ohio State has nabbed the conference accolade the previous five weeks dating back to Feb. 14. Buchanan has won three during the span, while sophomore Blaz Rola has garnered the other two weekly laurels.

The New Albany, Ohio, native, who is ranked 24th in the latest ITA singles poll, defeated 30th-ranked Alexis Klegou 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to lift Ohio State to a 6-1 victory over No. 17 Texas A&M March 9. Prior to his singles victory, Buchanan also was victorious at No. 1 doubles with partner Rola. The nation?s top-ranked pair defeated the 25th-ranked Aggie tandem of Junior Ore and Jackson Withrow 8-3, helping the Buckeyes capture their 16th doubles point in 17 attempts for the season.

The Buckeyes (18-1; 2-0 Big Ten) will resume non-conference action at 3 p.m. March 19 at LSU before travelling to Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs at 2:30 p.m. March 21.

The Buckeyes will make a trip south this week.
SEC opponents #27 LSU and #3 Georgia will be seeking to knock off the #2 ITA ranked Scarlet and Gray.

The Ohio State men?s tennis team (18-1) will face a pair of Top 30 Southeastern Conference schools as it will meet No. 27 LSU at 3 p.m. Monday before heading to Athens to take on the third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Buckeyes will look to remain perfect on the road this season and are currently 3-0 away from Columbus.
Ohio State will return to Athens May 17th for the beginning of the 2012 NCAA Team Championships, with Georgia serving as host.

Break Points:
 • Ohio State is 7-5 all-time vs. LSU, having won the previous six meetings.
 • The Buckeyes are 3-10 vs. Georgia all-time, but have won the last three matches.
 • As the No. 2 team nationally, Ohio State is 63-4.
 • Ohio State has won 60 of its last 61 regular-season (non-tournament) road contests dating back to 2006.
 • The Buckeyes have been victorious in 35 of their previous 37 matches.
 • Ohio State has won 140 consecutive home matches in Columbus.
 • Since 2001, Ohio State is 263-37 when ranked in the ITA Top 25. That percentage improves to 216-14 from the 2005-06 season onward.
 • The Buckeyes have been ranked in the ITA Top 10 for 181 consecutive matches (beginning March 7, 2006).
 • Ohio State has won 81 consecutive Big Ten Conference matches. . . .
Tiger Watch
LSU currently is 11-4 on the season with a 2-2 mark in conference play. The Tigers enter the match vs. Ohio State having won five of their last six contests. The Tigers? lone loss in the streak was at Auburn March 11. LSU?s other SEC loss was at the hands of No. 9 Kentucky March 2.

Ohio State vs. LSU
The Buckeyes are 7-5 all-time against the Tigers. All seven wins have occurred under head coach Ty Tucker.

Georgia Notes
For the third time this season, the Buckeyes will face at Top 3 team, this time Georgia. Boasting a 13-1 record, the Bulldogs? only loss this season was vs. USC in the ITA National Team Indoor Tournament, the same tournament the top-ranked Trojans handed the Buckeyes their only loss of the year. Georgia enters the match vs. the Scarlet and Gray on a five-match win streak, including four wins vs. SEC competition.
Ohio State vs. Georgia
The Buckeyes are 3-10 all-time vs. the Bulldogs. The meeting Wednesday will mark the third-consecutive season the two perennial tennis powers will meet. Ohio State has won the previous two meetings with a 6-1 win in Columbus last season and a 4-2 triumph in Athens during the 2009-10 season. The Scarlet and Gray also were victorious vs. the Bulldogs in the 2007-08 with a 4-1 decision. Those three wins are the only wins Ohio State has accumulated vs. Georgia. . . .

Big Ten Best
Ohio State has won 81 consecutive matches in the Big Ten after defeating Penn State 7-0 March 11 in Columbus. The Buckeyes also secured a 7-0 shutout vs. Michigan State in their 2012 Big Ten opener. Ohio State?s next Big Ten contest will take place at Indiana March 25.

Entering the season, the Buckeyes have collected six consecutive Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles. Head coachTy Tucker also has nabbed Big Ten Coach of the Year every year during the span as well.

All Ranked Up
The new individual Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings were released March 13. It served as the second computerized rankings of the season. The Buckeyes have six players ranked in the singles poll, tied with USC for most in the nation.
Currently sophomore Blaz Rola, who owns the team lead with 21 singles wins, is the highest ranked Buckeye at No. 6. Chase Buchanan, a 2011 All-American and two-time defending Big Ten Athlete of the Year, moved up 12 spots and is now ranked No. 12 after winning three consecutive matches. Rola and Buchanan also remain the top-ranked doubles pair nationally.
Peter Kobelt jumped 12 spots from No. 58 to No. 46 after winning three consecutive singles matches. Devin McCarthy fell to No. 79, while Ille Van Engelenis the 107th-ranked player nationally. Nelson Vick entered the rankings at No. 109.
Buchanan and Kobelt are ranked No. 25 in doubles, while McCarthyand Van Engelen dropped one spot to No. 39. Rola and Smith round out the doubles rankings for Ohio State at No. 54. The four ranked doubles teams, like singles, are the most in the country. . . .

Buckeye fans are realizing quickly that this is a special team. Andy Geiger in 1999, made a gutsy decision to hire a head coach who had no head coaching experience, a reputation for being a fiery competitor (think John McEnroe) and educated with only a BA in anthropology that was earned the year before.

I suppose Geiger did not have a lot at stake for a program that had been the perennial doormat of the Conference, had not won a Big Ten regular season title since WWII and the only other title prior to WWI.
Tucker has turned the OSU tennis program around, created a positive spirit, a winning attitude and has recruited locally.
OSU has been ranked in the top 10 of the ITA for the past 181 matches, has the longest home win streak (140) in the nation and has won 81 consecutive Big Ten matches and the last 6 Big Ten titles.
God bless you Andy Geiger!

Against LSU, OSU record before 1999 was 0-7, since Ty Tucker 5-0!
Against Georgia, OSU record before 2005 was 0-10, since 2006 3-0!

The challenge this week for Ohio State (and most indoor teams) will be traveling to the south where teams have been playing outdoors for a month.
Buckeyes will need to transition quickly to outdoor conditions.
It will also be important that the Buckeyes not look ahead to UGa and lose focus at #27 LSU on Monday. LSU has had some inconsistent play this year but they are a perennial tennis powerhouse.

The match vs. #3 Georgia will be watched closely by the college tennis world. Major computer points and potential seeding in the NCAA team tournament await the victor.
The Bucks are faced with a possible conflict of interest on Wednesday in Athens:
Doesn't look like USC will drop from the #1 ranking and #1 seed in the NCAA team Tournament in May. The challenge will be for OSU to gain a #2 or #3 seed in the bracket opposite the Trojans.
Virginia also looms as a tough opponent and a #4 or #5 seed for the Cavaliers would put them in USC's semifinal bracket of the draw.
A Buckeye win over UGa would strengthen tOSU's grip on the #2 ranking and the #2 seed in the NCAA's.:)
A Buckeye loss would bump Georgia's strenghth in the rankings and ensure the Bulldogs are in the #2 or #3 seed line in the NCAA draw opposite the good guys. The NCAA team tournament site is Athens, Ga however.

The match vs. LSU starts at 4 pm and LSU livestats has updates so fans can monitor the action. LINK

Litl is the Mr. OSU Tennis recruiting source and was hoping he might weigh in with updates on the prize of the 2012 tennis recruiting class.

The #1 rated senior is Bjorn Fratangelo originally from near Pittsburgh who has the option of college or turning pro.
His final 3 school choices are UGa, tOSU, and UVa.

IMHO Coach Tucker has been able to do more with the talent than the all world recruits who are at UVa and UGa, but to convince Fratangelo to consider a northern location after training the last 4 years in Fla would indicate the level of respect that Tucker has earned in the tennis world.
For Fratangelo the French Open junior champion to give OSU his verbal over the pro circuit would multiply that status exponentially.

Here is an article from http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/valleynewsdispatch/sports/s_782418.html

. . .
Last year, Fratangelo's amateur career took a huge upswing when he became the first American to win the French Open boys singles championship since John McEnroe in 1977. He rose as high as No. 2 in the International Tennis Federation's Junior rankings.
Fratangelo is the top-ranked boy in the class of 2012 by www.tennisrecruiting.net and has many Division I scholarship offers. He's narrowed his choices to Georgia, Ohio State and 2011 NCAA runner-up Virginia. That's if he decides to play in college.
Fratangelo plans to make a decision by April 11, the first day of the NCAA's letter-of-intent signing period.
"Bjorn could go anywhere (in Division I college tennis) and be the top player," Benic said.
While spending time with the U.S.'s Davis Cup team, Fratangelo enjoyed getting advice about his game and the best route to the pros from both sides of the argument. . .

Way too much credit there. My well is a little dry right now and perhaps when the outdoor season becomes full blown I will have a little more info. I am more familiar with the guys in the Central Ohio area.

Bjorn sounds a little bit like Chase who spent his high school career in Florida. However, Bjorn seems to be much more advanced at this stage of the game. I guess it will probably be up to him regarding whether he likes money more than a college degree. Don't know the reputation of the Virginia coach but I am sure that the coach of Georgia can point to a guy who is playing on the circuit.

Anyone's LSU livestats link updating?

They should be finishing doubles about now.

Live stats shows all three matches as early in the first set.

Doubles 1: OSU 1 LSU 2
Doubles 2: OSU 1 LSU 2
Doubles 3: OSU 1 LSU 0

It doesn't show who is serving..so perhaps everyone is still on serve?
