Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Bucks start out well in singles.
Smith wins his first set 6-0.
Kobelt wins his first set 6-3.
Buchanan wins his first set 6-2.
Van Engelen wins his first set 6-3.
McCarthy wins his first set 6-4.
Rola wins his first set 7-6.
It would appear that after dropping the doubles point the Bucks became a very pissed off group of young men.

The ITA released their weekly rankings of NCAA tennis teams and the Buckeyes held on to the #2 spot in the computer polls.

Link

A few notes from this week's ITA computer results:

Virginia edged out UCLA for the #3 spot this week after being #4 last week.

Big movers in the ITA rankings this week include:
Washington Huskies who jumped 11 spots to #13
Mississippi who bumped up 28 spots to #16.
Indiana Hoosiers cracked the top 20 at #18, up 11 spots from last week.
Big droppers were:
Auburn down 15 spots.
South Carolina down 11.

It is probably way too early to talk seeding at the NCAA team tournament in May, but those things are always critical if Buckeyes want to make this year a championship season.
If OSU could receive a #2 or #3 seed, it would be a great advantage. We want to avoid USC and their all world lineup until the final round.
The Buckeye upset victory over Virginia in the ITA National indoors is huge for computer points! OSU schedule strength also favors their point potential.

Buckeyes are in the driver's seat but must play strong tennis the rest of the season, avoid injuries/off days to hold on to the #2 or 3 ranking.
OTOH, Virginia will be looking over their shoulder and trying to stay in the #3 spot and hoping they have enough points to stay above UCLA, Duke, Georgia, and Kentucky so they do not have to face USC in the semis of the NCAAs.

OSU will face another strong test this Friday 6 pm at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center when #17 Texas A & M visits Columbus.
Go Bucks!

Link

Chase Buchanan, a senior on the No. 2 Ohio State men?s tennis team, was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week the conference announced Tuesday. The honor is his fourth this season and 14th of his career.
Including the fall season, the Buckeyes have won 10 of the 18 conference athlete of the week honors awarded this season.
Ranked 24th in the ITA singles polls, the New Albany, Ohio, native defeated 45th-ranked Greg Andrews 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles en route to helping Ohio State down No. 26 Notre Dame, 5-2, March 3. Prior to his singles victory, Buchanan teamed with Blaz Rola to form the No. 1 doubles team in the nation and beat the Fighting Irish pair of Andrews and Spencer Talmadge 8-3 at the No. 1 position.
The Buckeyes (15-1; 1-0 Big Ten) will now prep for a three-match weekend when they host Texas A&M at 6 p.m. Friday at the Varsity Tennis Center (880 W. Henderson Rd.). No. 2 Ohio State Preps for Three Home Matches...

A preview of the big weekend for the men's tennis program is posted on the OSU tennis official site.

Link

The No. 2 Ohio State men?s tennis team (15-1) will host a trio of teams this weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Buckeyes will face No. 17 Texas A&M at 6 p.m. Friday, before their doubleheader Sunday vs. Penn State at noon and the University of Northwest Ohio at 5 p.m.
Break Points:
? As the No. 2 team nationally, Ohio State is 60-4.
? Ohio State has won 60 of its last 61 regular-season (non-tournament) road contests dating back to 2006.
? The Buckeyes have been victorious in 32 of their previous 34 matches.
? Since 2001, Ohio State is 260-37 when ranked in the ITA Top 25. That percentage improves to 213-14 from the 2005-06 season onward.
? The Buckeyes have been ranked in the ITA Top 10 for 178 consecutive matches (beginning March 7, 2006).
? Ohio State has won 80 consecutive Big Ten Conference matches....

Scouting the Aggies
Texas A&M is 9-5 overall on the season and travel to Columbus having won two consecutive matches and four of its previous five matches. The Aggies? wins came against Baylor, TCU, UT-Arlington and Abilene Christian. The only loss during that stretch was to Texas in the ITA National Indoors Championship.

However, Texas A&M previously defeated the Longhorns Feb. 10 at a neutral site in Houston. Other wins on the season include Mississippi State and Purdue. All five of the Aggies? losses have come against ranked opponents.
Texas A&M are led by senior and No. 30 Alexis Klegou. Klegou is the only ranked Aggie in the ITA singles poll released Feb. 28.
Ohio State vs. Texas A&M
The Buckeyes are 2-3 all-time against the Aggies and head coach Ty Tucker has two victories vs. one loss. The lone setback occurred last season in College Station, Texas with the No. 17 Aggies defeating No. 5 Ohio State 4-0 March 11. In 2010 and 2009, Ohio State was a 4-3 victor in each meeting.

Previewing Penn State As of March 6, the Nittany Lions are 8-2 overall with two more matches on their schedule before they meet Ohio State. Nine of the 10 matches Penn State has played have been at home in University Park. Penn State has accrued wins against Lehigh, Princeton, Buffalo, Bucknell and Army. The two losses include a 6-1 defeat at North Carolina State in its season opener and another 6-1 setback Feb. 4 vs. Virginia Tech.
Head coach Jeff Zinn?s Penn State squad includes seniors Taylor Cohen and Jason Lee as well as juniors Guanhua Chen, C.J. Griffin, Christopher Hasyn and Bryan Welnetz. . .

Dominant in Columbus
The Buckeyes have won a school-record 137 consecutive home matches, which includes a 9-0 start this season. The streak dates back to the 2002-03 campaign. So far this season Ohio State is 6-0 vs. ITA Top 75 teams (No. 44 Cornell, No. 16 Mississippi State, No. 29 Indiana, No. 12 Pepperdine, No. 7 Kentucky and No. 17 North Carolina). In the Big Ten, no other team in any sport has won as many consecutive contests at home than the Buckeyes.
It has been nearly 3,250 days since the Buckeyes last lost a home match. The home win streak began April 6, 2003 with a 5-2 triumph over Purdue.

Strong Schedule
Ohio State had endured a demanding schedule in the spring, both in non-conference and conference play. The Scarlet and Gray have played 12 consecutive matches against teams ranked in the initial ITA Top 75 poll starting with Mississippi State (No. 16) and Pepperdine (12). It continued at home Feb. 25 and 26 against No. 7 Kentucky and No. 17 North Carolina, respectively. The Buckeyes met four Top 14 ranked opponents at the ITA National Indoors Championship in Charlottesville, Va., including the Top 2 teams in the country in No. 1 USC and No. 2 Virginia.
In total, 20 of Ohio State?s 25 spring opponents finished ranked in the ITA Top 75 last season, including 13 in the Top 35. Georgia, Kentucky and Texas A&M all finished in the Top 10. All nine road opponents concluded the 2010-11 campaign with a spot in the ITA standings.

Buckeyes still feel the sting from last year's loss at Texas A & M.
In reality the 2011 Aggie loss (hostile road environment) was a humbling experience, it broke a streak of consecutive OSU wins in dual matches, and dropped the Bucks from contention (computer points) for a possible #2 or #3 seed in the NCAA team tournament (OSU was #4 seed vs. #1 USC in semifinal).

Friday 6 pm is a Critical match vs. A & M at HOME.
Bucks want to protect and extend their 137 match home win streak.
Would love to see the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center rocking for the good guys Friday night at 6 pm.

Fans can monitor the action on Friday night and Sunday on Livestats
The fans can also watch using the new feed for live video
