Question. I don't understand why they play all nine matches when I thought the first seven points were the only ones that mattered. I thought the only points that counted were the 1-4 singles matches and the 3 doubles matches.

Good observation Litl!
In the dual matches there are 7 total points, 4 points being necessary for a team victory.
The team that wins two out of three doubles matches receives one team point, and each of the 6 singles winners receive a team point.
The doubles point is contested first. When 2 of the 3 doubles matches are secured by one team they are awarded the doubles point.
The 6 singles matches start at the same time, finish staggered depending on length of points and games. As the single's matches finish team points are awarded and when the 4th point is tallied, a team is assured the victory.
In other words each singles match counts for one potential team point and the "order of finish" notation at the bottom of the Final Results shows the order in which the points were tallied.
Sometimes the match is halted after one team reaches 4 points.
This happens most often in tournaments where keeping players fresh is important.
The coaches/tournament directors agree to this before the match starts.
In most dual matches teams and coaches want the players to finish their individual matches.
Usually players want to complete matches for their record and postseason seed, playing time, and sometimes its hard/disappointing for players to halt in the middle of a match because the team has won or lost.

Ohio State men's tennis made a strong 7-0 statement against no. 28 Minnesota Sunday afternoon at the Varsity inddor tennis center. Newcomer Chase Buchanon gave a glimpse of what Buckeye tennis fans have to look forward to when he started his first collegiate tennis match with a big straight set victory at no. 2 singles.
This team is just starting to peak as the season progresses.

I guess my question would be do the team rankings really mean anything:huh: when the NCAA rolls around. At least the NCAA champion is determined by the players.:io:

The NCAA championship finals are played this year at Texas A & M, College Station, TX, May 14-25.
There will actually be two different tournaments held during these 12 days:
The first is the team competition where the top 16 teams (4 from each regional qualifier) compete. The draw of the tournament involves seeding much like the March Madness where it is an advantage for tOSU to have a high seed (#2 or 3 would be best to avoid facing Virginia before the final round).
ITA team rankings determine the seeding, so an ITA ranking of 2 or 3 would secure the likelihood of avoiding Virginia until a potential final round match up.
Team competition in the tournament is scored the same way as a dual meet with 7 points availabe, the first team to tally 4 declared the winner and moves on to the next round. The team champion is crowned after the final of this tournament.

After the first tournament (team competition) the NCAA has a second tournament to determine individual champions. The top 64 NCAA Div. 1 singles players and top 32 doubles teams compete for individual honors.
In this tournament as you noted Litl, the team rankings do not matter for seeding. The ITA uses player rankings in singles and doubles to seed players in the tournament draw.

From my conversations and eavesdropping, the goal of Ty and the team is first and foremost the ITA team championship.
When speaking of the NCAA tournament in May the first tournament (team championship) is their priority and passion. The second tournament for individual honors has become secondary or a point of nondiscussion.

Thanks. I understand.

Off-topic I wonder what Texas A&M is offering these days because last weekend they hosted the NCAA swimming championships. Money or facilities. I never knew they had it so well down there:biggrin:

At the University of Kentucky the new home of coach John Calipari, and the Boone Tennis Complex, the ITA 5th ranked Ohio State University Men's tennis team completed a 5-2 victory over the 13th ranked University of Kentucky Wildcats of the SEC.

Winners for the Buckeyes were #3 singles Steven Moneke, #4 singles Justin Kronauge, #5 singles Balazs Novak, and #6 singles Matt Allare, all in straight sets.

The doubles point was secured with a victory by Koniecko and Uzawa at 3rd doubles and the #1 doubles team of Moneke and Kronauge came from behind to capture a 9-8 victory with a tie breaker 7 points to 2.
Next up for the Buckeyes is a trip up north, first to MSU on Saturday then to TSUN, Sunday.
Against that latter school up north, The Ohio State University is seeking to continue its most recent winning ways. The weasels have not been kind to the Buckeyes, however, as the all time record stands at 19-73 in favor of the bad guys.
Go Bucks do us all proud in THE GAME.
