Game Thread Ohio State @ Iowa, 11/04/17 @ 3:30 (ESPN)

Do you really think Tressel doesn't finish off the big ten title every single one of those years? Yeah I didn't think so. There was no team capable of challenging us when we won our titles with Tressel... who was going to step up and challenge us? Penn State, not on their off years. Michigan, hahaha. Michigan State, hell no. No you're looking at Wisconsin or Iowa as the only two teams that could've stopped us really in the years that we won our titles with Tressel.

Lets not act like Tressel left Urban with garbage for the 2012 year either as well.

Both are great coaches but you can't dispute facts. Tressel won 6 in 9 years and UFM at best will have won 3 of 6 (counting 2012 if you will) if we win this year. Which means UFM has to win the next three straight to be in Jim's class when it comes to big ten dominance.
Meyer has to lose 3 more to match Tressel's worst season, or lose both games to schools from the north to match the 04 season.

2002 - Tressel's lone NC, never faced 11-1 Iowa like they would have in the CCG.
2005 - Tressel's best team, would have finished 2nd in the division.
2006 - Tressel's NC team never played 12-1 Wisconsin (like in a CCG). Braxton's 2013 team sure would have liked that courtesy.
2007 - same outcome, face 5-3 Wisconsin team before NC berth.
2008 - lost to PSU, would have finished 2nd in division
2009 - beat Iowa at home in OT. Would've faced them again for CCG. Hardly a layup for that inconsistent 09 squad.
2010 - never faced 11-1 MSU, would've faced them in a CCG (or a rematch with UW who beat them, depending on alignment)

So in 11 years, Tressel would have played in 5 CCGs.

02 vs 11-1 IOW (didn't meet)
06 vs 12-1 UW (didn't meet)
07 vs 9-3 UW (didn't meet)
09 vs 10-2 IOW (who beat them)
10 vs 11-1 MSU (didn't meet) or 11-1 UW (who beat them)

I'm not sure I would feel overly confident about any of those matchups. Maybe 06 OSU, but all of them are pretty losable.

Meanwhile Meyer would've won the B1G 4 out of 5 times under Tressel rules (with 2015 being the surprising exception), and he may add a 5th Tressel era win this year.

No, Meyer wins every year. MSU lost to Nebraska in 2015, so they had a conference loss. Co-Champs.
Actually Iowa wins that year, going 8-0.

Odds are OSU probably wins out in this regular season and captures a 5th Tressel era title in 6 years (yes I'm giving them the 12 title) before having to earn the actual title vs UW.

LOL
Going by the numbers since 2011 (the first year of the B10 Champ game).

Wisc 4 appearances 2 Champ
MSU 3 App 2 Champ
OSU 2 app 1 Champ
PSU, Iowa, Neb all with 1 Appearance and PSu won it last year

Now one can clearly see that Wisc has had the lions share of dominance. But it also plays in the shit division and is basically gifted a spot in the Champ game most years.

I am not sure I could make a great argument on who is a better coach and convince myself. They are both really good and both have a really different approaches to how you win at football and how to run a team.

I know if Dantonio were to leave tomorrow both Urban and Tressel would be on my list of replacements.

ok, apologies for the bs as I am in no way tense or upset. Used to spend a lot of time at political blogs. Fun times. I digress.

You didn't dispute the B1G sucked or was not very good during Tressel's tenure. Will say Tressel's teams were more consistent in their play style. Different eras, different philosophies. No one enjoyed Tressel's 9-1 record vs TTUN more than me.

Have a nice day!
No worries buddy!

Guys we can go forever playing this game. Bottom line Tressel 6. UFM 1.

Until we start proving more in conference no opinion matters to me. Tressel is the better football coach to me. Sure he's not as good of a recruiter or a motivator, but a as a football coach I'd roll with Jim. Just my preference.

I'd rather know what I have then have to wonder which type of team will show up.

1. I'm not betting against that 02' team ever so that's a win.
2. No one in the big ten was stopping Troy& Co. So win.
3. in 07' we beat Wisconsin in the shoe and would've beat them again
4. Already beat Iowa but yeah that would've been a tough game. You'd have to assume we'd win since we already proved we could do that.
5. I'm taking TP against either of those teams. Win.

I don't see us losing any of those 5 but who knows... could've lost all 5 for all we know.

At kickoff, OSU 13 looks much more promising than osu 07, 09 in my imo.

02 would keep you up at night. 07 was not dominant but should win.

I think JT wins 3 in ccg format. I think Meyer wins at least 3 in 10 years at osu, particularly if he were permitted to play for his first in 2012.

Very well could've... Fun topic though.

Which games do you think Tressel would've lost during his tenure had we had a CCG?

The hiring of Urban triggered a resurgence of hiring better coaches in the Big. Making the Big a tougher conference to win. I love Tressel as a coach but times have changed and the Big has changed. How quickly we forget those Tressel
Bollman offenses that drove us crazy!
Urban is just on another level and has the record as proof.

On another level? Not sure about that but that's just my opinion.

Could you imagine if Tressel had hired Tom Herman? Tell me that doesn't sound awesome. Particularly when TP was here!

Buckeye Breakdown: And We Thought Halloween Was Over

DSC_5618F-1170x780.jpg

Ohio State entered the game versus Iowa ranked near the top 5 nationally in Total Offense, while yours truly undermined the offensive prowess of the Hawkeyes, even referring to their offense as “archaic.”

While most of us celebrated Halloween earlier in the week, it appears as though the Buckeyes celebrated by showing up late to the party dressed up as an inept offense and all that was left in the candy bowl was the garbage that nobody wants like Pixie Stix or Almond Joys.

The defense of the Buckeyes has been taking the most heat this week after surrendering 48 of the 55 points last week. While it is alarming, the fact that Ohio State routinely curls up offensively into a protective shell during important games is perhaps more glaring.

In this week’s Buckeye Breakdown, we take a look at some of the issues that lead to the debacle, as well as launch an Amber Alert for the creativity we’ve seen earlier in the season.

Barrett’s Indecision
Right from the start, J.T. Barrett showed a lack of decision-making that has otherwise been rock solid this season. Instead of taking what the offense was giving him, he held the ball and ultimately delivered a pass late and over the middle, two major no-nos for a QB.

What stands out the most on the play is that his initial read is Marcus Baugh to the flat, and it is wide open for an easy 5-7 yards. The Buckeyes needed to take the easy yards to play with any sort of rhythm and tempo and it was plays like this that ultimately tied their hands and took away their own strengths offensively.

Barrett never seemed to recover following the disastrous start as he continued to force the ball downfield on his way to 4 interceptions. Here he came off his initial read, the wheel route versus a linebacker, to make a more difficult throw on the run.

We can nitpick this game to death, but there was a drastic momentum change when Bosa was ejected. If not for that penalty, Iowa punts right there, then who knows. One thing I can tell you is that Iowa’s hopes of winning shot through the roof when they watched the best defensive player on the field get ejected. They smelled blood at that point, got a fresh set of downs, and zipped it to the end zone the very next play.

You’ll have people saying it wouldn’t have made a difference, but I strongly disagree. A giant momentum and confidence boost can completely change the outcome of a game.
