No Huddle Breakdown: Scouting Wisconsin's Impact Players

NoHuddleUW.jpg

It is expected that Wisconsin will be the toughest opponent that the Buckeyes have faced this season. Offensively the Badgers have struggled, while on defense they can make life miserable for their opponents. Despite the disparate fortunes, both sides of the ball have players who can make an impact on Saturday.

T. J. Watt
OLB #42
Junior
6’5” 243

The current Big Ten leader in sacks entering the game, Watt aligns primarily on the edge, utilizing his speed and good upfield burst to rush the QB. He possesses good bend and agility when cornering off the edge, using a combination of bull rush and spin moves to apply pressure. Watt uses his strength to shed blocks when engaged and has very good quickness and agility when pursuing down the line. The team leader in tackles possesses very good instincts as he is able to key and diagnose plays, reacting well to screen plays. Does not drop into coverage often and is vulnerable versus the wheel route as he has a tendency to watch the QB. Watt will likely draw the attention of Marcus Baugh throughout the game to alleviate the pressure Watt will put on the young Buckeye tackles.

Derrick Tindal
CB #25
Junior
5’11” 175

Tied for 2nd in the Big Ten with 3 INT entering the contest versus Ohio State, Derrick Tindal is the best defender in the Badger secondary. Tindal is a physical CB that is very good in Man Coverage, showing good route matching ability. He displays excellent ball tracking skills and plays the ball through the pocket of the receiver. Tindal has good awareness in Zone Coverage, utilizing his speed to show good range and closing ability. The Badger CB is often called for Pass Interference due to his use of hands and his physical play. Tindal can match up against any of the Buckeye receivers, though may be limited in his style of play coming off hand surgery during the Bye week.

The Buckeyes Just Can't Wait to Get on the Road Again

ExitingTunnel.jpg

The Wizard of Oz taught us that there is no place like home, but as the great Willie Nelson also taught us, being on the road has its advantages as well.

It's probably not wise for college athletes to subscribe to too many of Nelson's teachings, but there is no doubt that this weekend the Buckeyes will be going to a place they've never been and they'll be seeing some things that they may never see again.

After all, the last time Ohio State visited Madison was 2012, which means that no current Buckeye has played in Wisconsin's Camp Randall Stadium.

"I heard it’s nuts, so it’s going to be a fun environment," Buckeye center Pat Elflein said this week.

"I’ve been hearing about that stadium for a long time and I just can’t wait to go," added defensive end Jalyn Holmes. "It’s like a ride. It’s like a video game. I get the trailer of it every day and I’m watching it, but I can’t wait to play. It’s a good, hostile environment."

On Wednesday, Urban Meyer called Camp Randall one of the five or six best environments in college football. That might sound like a tough mountain for the Buckeyes to climb, but there's just something about the road that brings players together.

"Everyone hates you and everyone is yelling at you and saying stuff to you," Elflein explained. "It’s pretty much everybody against us. We don’t take everybody on road games. I think we take like 70 guys, and those are the real guys that are playing, that have put in the work, that are the elite players. It’s kind of like your little army versus everybody in enemy territory and we’re all we got, versus everybody else."

Based off the tape, Ohio State should have no problem with Wisconsin’s offense

Wisconsin did not show the ability to execute against Michigan.

f there was one word to describe Wisconsin’s offense, it would be... unimpressive. When watching Wisconsin play Michigan — albeit one of the best defenses in the country -- the offense as a whole was underwhelming, inefficient, lacked explosiveness and were unable to execute. The offensive line does not play at a typical Wisconsin-level, the quarterback misses throws on the regular, and although they have a solid running back in Corey Clement, their running game is not well-executed.

Just looking at the statistics, quarterback Alex Hornibrook threw for 88 yards on the day and they rushed for 100 yards on the ground. Hornibrook turned the ball over three times and looked uncomfortable against Don Brown’s Wolverine defense.

If Wiscy only musters 188 yards of offense against us, shit will be ugly for them...

Key for this game is Tempo. O needs to go go go no matter the weather. Don't let the d get set. Keep them on their heels. None of what we saw last week and assume/hope that's why we looked Jekyll and Hyde last week with the up tempo one drive then used whole clock the next. Buckeyes are fast. Play fast.

Despite them not having much in terms of explosiveness if we hold them to 188 yards I'd be impressed. Is it crazy to think we can do it? No.

However they've been given 2 weeks to figure things out and particularly how to attack us. I tend to think they'll make a few plays especially early in the game.

Can they do it consistently enough is the issue and that's where I'm not sold on them. What makes me feel good about this game is they have nothing to attack us with through the air and that means to beat us they're going to need to run the ball for 250+ on us to win. Just don't see it.

The one thing I'll be watching is will our offense give them points with int/fumbles for TDs or put them in prime field position. If we just force them to go 70+ yards to score I'm just not sure how they'll do it.

I tried to find the video from 2008 with Malcolm Jenkins jumping around at Camp Randall like he's having the most fun he's ever had during his life, but alas, I was unsuccessful.

Instead, just imagine someone drunk off his ass, jumping around in his living room, and screaming expletives about Bucky going to sleep with broken dreams and deflated delusions of grandeur from not defeating the best football team in the nation.

Because that's how I intend to spend my Saturday evening.

Use that tempo so the defense has to play with their ears pinned back?
