OHIO STATE SHOWS RESOLVE, COMES TOGETHER TO ESCAPE WISCONSIN 30-23 IN OVERTIME

"Wow."

Still getting situated in his seat in the postgame interview room, Urban Meyer took a deep breath and muttered that word, a smile crinkling across his face as he peered into the lights and television cameras.

It wasn't pretty, but his team remains unbeaten.

“That's a top-fiver. Very proud of our guys. And when I say it, I mean really proud,” Meyer said. “We did not play well in certain areas but man did they play hard.”

The No. 2 Buckeyes escaped the sticky clutches of Camp Randall Stadium with a 30-23 overtime victory against No. 8 Wisconsin, a game that brought out Ohio State's worst defensive performance of the season and a continued struggle with J.T. Barrett and the passing attack. It didn't matter when all the chips were down, however, as Barrett continued to bring his team back either with his legs or arm.

It was that arm that threw for just 81 yards in the first half as Ohio State trailed 16-6 at intermission. But that same arm tossed the eventual game-winning touchdown pass to Noah Brown on a fade in overtime, the same one that lobbed a beautiful ball to Dontre Wilson for 43 yards to an extend a drive that ended with a game-tying field goal with 3:57 left.

“J.T. Barrett was not outstanding but he's one of the toughest cats I've ever been around and I know who I want behind center and those kind of environments is J.T. Barrett,” Meyer said.

THREE KEY STATS: WISCONSIN'S EFFICIENT OFFENSE, OHIO STATE'S RED ZONE DEFENSE AND THE J.T. BARRETT DIFFERENCE HELP THE BUCKEYES UPEND BUCKY

Wisconsin punched Ohio State in the mouth and rode the wave of momentum for a while, only to have J.T. Barrett refuse to let his team lose on the road on his watch.

Barrett's huge second half propelled his second-ranked Buckeyes to a 30-23 overtime victory on Saturday night in Camp Randall Stadium, a game that ended on a thrilling walk-off sack of Alex Hornibrook by Ohio State's defensive line.

Ohio State looked out of sorts from the jump defensively, while Barrett struggled to get on the same page with his receivers. The Badgers built a 10-point lead on the leg of Andrew Endicott, who made three field goals before halftime. As it turns out, Ohio State's ability to keep Wisconsin out of the end zone enough gave Barrett just enough time and chances to pull out a win.

Here are three key statistics from Ohio State's victory, which moved it to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in Big Ten play.

WISCONSIN 6.1 YARDS PER PLAY

Against a variety of jet sweeps and play-action passes to the outside, the Buckeyes continued to find themselves out of position defensively which resulted in huge plays in the early going. The Badgers finished the game averaging 6.1 yards per play, down from the blistering 8.0 clip it put together in the first 30 minutes.

Ohio State struggled to get off blocks on the edge and make plays on the ballcarrier, only to fall for fakes and get gashed up the middle by Corey Clement. Hornibrook made a few nice throws and found tight end Troy Fumagalli seven times for 84 yards. Jazz Peavy caught four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown while Clement finished with 164 yards on 25 carries.

Paul Chryst put together a brilliant game plan and called a variety of plays Ohio State admitted they did not see on film in their preparation. That led to an efficient offensive day, at least until the Badgers made it do the red zone.

I've seen it now. Wisky obviously used the extra week to really game plan this. Ohio State's offense still scored more points on them than any other team. Wisconsin's defense was everything that I thought it would be. It is the toughest that they will face this year.

The B1G is back as a tough conference. Indiana also gave Nebraska a great game. The expectation that Ohio State is going to blow everyone away by 6+ touchdowns is now gone, but there is a lot of good to take away from a tough game in inclement conditions. Although Northwestern and Nebraska bring top 20 level defenses, Ohio State should win every game coming by at least 17 points. More importantly, they will have lots of time to grow before TSUN.

I'm more optimistic than ever about a shot at the NC game.
