Game Thread Ohio State at Penn State, 10/22/16, 8:00pm ET ABC/WatchESPN

Our best WR is a running back... let that sink in and let that just consume you for a moment

(Quickly turns and looks at Zac Smith)

Also the best attribute for our starting RB is blocking for our hybrid RB/wr.

Also how hasn't Urban and company recruited a couple big Power RB after how successful Hyde was in the offense? Webber is smaller and doesn't have top end speed

Our staffs track record of just folding when things get tough is hard for me to ignore. If Prince was struggling where was his help? If we couldn't make a play where was our best plays to Samuel or JT?

I'm just concerned when we say fuck it let's just win the game. This isn't Jim Tressel who mastered this approach this is urban meyer and when you're approach is "fuck you I'm destroying you" you better not say "fuck it I'm done"

Because that's not your style and that going to give you losses like we've seen from UFM against MSU/PSU/VT.

We lose when we play not to lose. WE ALWAYS WIN when we go out and take what we know is ours.

I now understand why Webber didn't see the field last year. He wasn't ready and I still don't think he is ready to be the starting RB. If Dunn didn't get kicked off the team, I dont think Webber would be starting. Samuel being the best option at WR and RB adds this problem. Would Warren Ball be starting RB if he didn't transfer?

Are you high right now? Weber is not the problem and fuck no Dunn nor Ball would start over him

it doesn't appear that warriner and beck have an idea what to do if the weather is not perfect.

i honestly thought that coming into tonight. but after seeing this performance i think the issue is the oline and the wr's more than the play calling. someone mentioned dontre wilson being the best wr after samuel. im not sure we have a dependable wr after samuel currently. that is NOT a knock on wilson. though i am going to pick on him a bit by mentioning a play i noticed that he was involved in where i suspect he didn't do what he was supposed to do. again, i really don't have any issues with wilson at all, but my suspicion is he messed up on this specific play. cb blitz came from wilson's side (semi sure it was the cb over him though i could be wrong), which made it an overloaded rush as there were 2 rushers already coming from that side. i.e. more rushers than could be physically accounted for as it was an empty set with no te. wilson was running a quick slant which was either his called route (in which case had to make him the hot route by default) or he broke off his route to run that one because his guy blitzed making him the hot route. i think this not only because of the route that he was running but because the blitzer came from his side in an overload situation. on this play barrett literally hit wilson in the facemask with the ball (i don't think wilson even put his hands up and seemed stunned that it happened).

to pick on other wr's (because i don't have any real issues with wilson beyond that one play from a wr perspective), but when jt is flushed out of the pocket and has to literally use hand signals to tell wr's where to go during a scramble drill....... i can't blame play calling anymore. i mean seriously, you either go to the qb or you go downfield. i don't know of any other offensive strategy in that situation. maybe there is and i don't know about it (completely possible), but as far as i know those are literally the only two things that anyone tells their wr's to do in that situation. so i find it really problematic when jt is literally using hand singles to say "go there". thats really not good... but really is a sure fire sign of youth.

none of these things are indictments on any specific player or even the wr's as a whole or any knock on talent/ability. this is just a part of what i see as a likely explanation as to why we are calling the plays we are. we have guys at wr who "appear" to be missing reads and are not running the expected route(s) or looking for the ball at the appropriate times. further, we have guys who are not working to help their qb in a way the qb expects. factor in the apposing dline that is getting heavy pressure on the qb relatively quickly... that makes for a situation where it is hard to call pass plays at all.

now it is 100% fair to say the above could be complete bullshit. i don't have a copy of the playbook or have any insider knowledge of how the offense determines hot routes or what is expected during a scramble drill. so take all of that with a very large grain of salt.

absolutely love this team and still think it is the most talented group in the country. but it is clearly a team that has a completely reasonable amount of growing to do yet.

What does Webber do great? Block? He doesn't have top end speed and I have yet to see the power he was suppose to have out of high school. He has balance problems and gets taken down way to easily. Of the starting RBs of the last 10 years at OSU, I wouldnt take him over anyone else. He has looked like an average college football RB not an average buckeye RB. If the coaching staff wanted to control the game by running the ball today, they had a better option in Samuel.

He doesn't have the speed but he is the grind it out RB that if utilized correctly, would have paid great dividends tonight. Doesn't help when the OL couldn't block well. If the OL do their job, Weber has a big night. When you're up 21-7 he is what we could have leaned on if the OL were doing well. Zeke was special, he could make those plays. It might be a while before we see a guy like Zeke, but Weber is not a problem he made some good blocks tonight particularly on Samuels TD.

That VT team had a defense to at least make it understandable. This team had no excuse of a gimmick defense or a team that could play man

This PSU team was out manned in every way possible. Was down 21 to 7 in the 4th and somehow beat our boys.

How we went from playing with nothing to lose to playing to not lose everything is beyond me

Well, to me it was because we changed our mindset. We went from playing to win in the third quarter to playing not to lose in the 4th quarter. I don't think it was intentional, I think it was more of a "whew, okay, we're up 2 TD's now let's not take any chances and let's conservatively win out this game." That's what it felt like to me on offense anyway.

The constant empty sets have got to go.

So does that awful option play that works like 1 out of every 10 times if that.

I wish we would do more play action, zone read, jet sweeps with Samuel/Wilson, and when the defense is sending a blitz hit them with the slants that have been working. Not go away from what is working after having success. This offense is not what it used to be and has no identity much like last year.

Do you think a grind it out RB fits into this offense? This team is built to be aggressive. If RB doesn't have the big play ability, you would hope he would have the power to get good amount of yards after contact. The team feeds off of plays with big yards and first downs.

Haven't u heard? Jet Sweeps are done people have the shit figured out! Not our 5 wide set or our option game or our stupid rub route to samuel when he goes in motion.

So the jet sweep is done lol... comical us admitting teams have that figured out when we once again admit self defeat before it even happens.

Time and place for everything including the jet fucking sweep that was a staple for 4 years.

Aggressive? How? Where?

He's shown enough ability to get winning yardage, if not home runs. Webber shouldn't be relied on for the home runs. If you want explosive, go to one of the other 4 or 5 positions.

This team has played its best when they are going for things like 4th and short, and playing with tempo. We have seen less and less tempo as the year has gone on.

Webber averaged 3.38 yards a carry today, 71 yards on 21 carries. That is barely winning yardage to move the chains, by inches.

If Webber isn't splitting carries with Samuel, more days like this will come. He looked like he did in every other game this year, this wasn't a bad day out for him. That should be worrying if that's the play we get out of our starting RB
