Ohio State 79, #21 Syracuse 65 (Final)

Watch out for Flynn, he is a gamer.

He reminds me of Conley Jr.....

I think OSU did a pretty solid job keeping their eye out on Flynn... :wink2:

In all honesty, I was really impressed with the Bucks tonight. They did a solid job spreading the ball around and making that extra pass. Koufos is already contributing in big ways. Othello Hunter is an absolute force to be reckoned with in the paint and on the defensive end of the court. Then, Butler's leadership and ball control is phenomenal and crucial to this team's success.

The only complaint I had tonight was OSU's lackluster job on the defensive boards. It seemed like Paul Harris had a ton of offensive boards. However, they are a young team and played well, only showing a few inexperienced mistakes tonight.

Man, once we started dropping the middle man from the top of the zone onto the high post, the 'Cuse interior offense dried up. They were blowing the zone up early until the zone started to focus on the high post.

Speaking of the high post and blowing up the zone......someone among you, I'm not positive who, has been begging to see the high-low with O and KK. Damned fine suggestion.

Man, I wish Twiggy had better hands.

PJ Hill at least made his (albeit short-lived) stint eventful. :p

Solid win and I'm very impressed with the offensive progression they showed this evening. :oh:

:io:

Let me first start off by saying that I had to quote this post...Your first two thoughts were the exact things I was coming on here to post about...

I have been talking about a hi-low with Hunter and KK for about 7 months now and we saw it in full effect tonight...

With that said there are still some negative things that I want to hit on...

Butler with some ill advised turnovers, uncharacteristic of him, but when we got up, he looked uniterested at times...Now you guys all know that I will back Butler in every situation, it was just weird down the stretch out of him...Kinda let Flynn get in his head a little...

Also rebounding...I think for every Matta coached team we always have trouble rebounding on the defensive end for whatever reason...I will never understand it...Sometimes we are out of position and sometimes we are there, but we need to work on owning the defensive boards...When 'Cuse made their run early in teh second half it was because we couldnt control the boards..

Also Turner and Diebler can make a living off pull up jumpers, sometimes they need to not worry about getting all the way to the rack...

PJ Hill glad to see coach Matta try and get him out there, but that pass looked like Chad Henne tyring to throw the ball...

Now onto the positives...

I have been saying how many mismatches this team presents, and how many different things we can do offensively...Well we saw the full arsenal tonight...We saw pick n pop, pick n roll, hi-lo, The curl with KK, which was the bread and butter last year with Oden, if you remember they showed it on college gameday, it worked to perfection I believe the first play out of either a timeout or right after halftime...We saw transistion ball, we saw slow down offense, we saw man offense, we saw zone offense...

It was clickin' tonight and the best thing is this team just put the zone offense in this week, they are still working on getting sets in, but they looked like they have been playing together for 4 years out there at times tonight...

While many thought that offense was going to be the weak link for this team, we didnt show that tonight...

Now I harped on Butler a little before, but overall he led this team tonight and it was his vetran leadership that propelled us in our runs, he got the ball where we needed it, he got us in to offenses, and he hit big shots, and played an all around great PG game...Someone posted earlier in the thread they thought Butler should shoot more...Well he isnt the guy that is going to force things, when things are going good like they were...

Diebler, he clearly had his best game, the one 3 hit was pure, but he is still struggling some with his shot, but it will come around, no worries from me...The thing I liked was just what JO was talking about in the Columbia game, he was at the point of the zone offense along with Butler and would create from one side when the bal was swung...he got into the lane a ton tonight and made some great passes when there and took it all the way when that was there...Played a great defensive game as well...

Turner, he stepped in and played great for Lighty when he went out with foul trouble...I think as some have mentioned he looks like he takes an extra step at times, hopefully that doesnt hurt us later in the season...But great all around game...he is going to be a great 6th man for us...Still at times shows that he is a frosh, but he is growing up quickly...

Hunter just continues to step his game up...He can be a force on both ends of the court, and you have to love how he is learning to play with KK...That block he had was impressive, but he just like KK need to work on defensive positioning...

KK What can I say honestly...We all saw the great performance...The kid shows great emotion, understands positioning on the floor, the hi-lo doesn't work if the underneath man isnt in position...He understands when to step outside, and when to go underneath...As JO always mentions his hands are great, and he has such a soft touch around the hoop, I couldnt believe when he tried that bank shot from the about 15 foot, that was Tim Duncan esque...Still needs work at times with footwork, and defensive positioning, but those things are coming as well...

Lighty struggled tonight, due to foul trouble, but he is going to be a steady player for us all year long, great to see that if he struggles others can pick him up...

Man I could go on, what an impressive win, Now lets get ready for the Aggies of ATM...Should be another test for this team...

most of the things have been hit on im not going to go on long (i think, i always seem to say that)

we had a discussion in the columbia thread (not with todd penn buckeye fan) about dribbling vs passing against a zone. if you watched the game tonight you probably realized how passing allows you to dominate the zone, how many easy baskets resulted from passing against the zone, i lost count after a lot. if you pass you can move the ball faster than with the dribble, resulting in easy looks, this team has the ability to knock down easy looks. against a zone sometimes it will be layups other times mid range sometimes 3balls. this team took advantage of them tonight. the unselfishness and willingness to make the easy pass, this teamwork results in easy baskets, easy baskets result in points, more points than the other team results in wins

high low game, weve wanted to see it we saw it, we liked it, we want more of it.

going small, this team pushed out a lead with a small lineup, a very nice contrast to the high low game.

styles, its been said we saw this team play all kinds. i still notice a lot of point and direction, mostly from butler, some from twigs and lighty as its obvious the offense isnt quite there yet. it will come, thats the thing more improvements will come.

i just pulled up a box score,
mins played
butler 39
diebler 36
hunter 32
kk 31
lighty 26
tunrer 20
twig 11
dallas 4
hill 1

jon diebler, apparently is a controversial person. its his fault hes in the game in some hs game.... ok im not going there again at all. the kid played all but 4 minutes tonight against a syracuse team a team coach by jimmy b. still didnt shoot the ball well early, 7 of 8 from the line and ended up with 12 pts. i found it interesting everytime he took it to the rack it was "matador" defense. was it crappy defense? or was it everybody wearing orange and the guy in the funny colored crimson tie thought he could kill you from the perm. was it poor defense or fear of the jump shot. the most interesting thing of the game was two things that i heard from my tv set. both along the lines of shot the damn ball jon. he had one time where he took the ball all the way to the hoop and matta got on him about pulling up and taking a shot. as you watch jon diebler i want you to watch little things, subtle things. watch how he often times is the pass to the guy who gets the assist. watch how he shifts slightly to open up a pass back to him, watch how he clears out or will drift and open up a back cut, a dribble drive. its little things like that that excite me about this kid. i dont care how many points he scored against the ohio school for the blind, the kid has a knack that cant be taught, or is very very very very very hard to teach.

butler, do we know what we have? if you watched a game the last 3 years then yes. saw some lazy passes and some carelessness. something i personally am willing to let slight, the coach will not. that pass to twig on the wing has to be on the money, you dont want a five out 24 feet from the hoop reaching for balls. make no doubts this is butlers team, he has the ability to be a leader without being the leader as shown last year, yet has the ability to grab the bull by the horns. he also has the keen ability to decide between the two.

lighty, picked up some fouls. his ability to score in the paint is huge, good rebounder, known commodity.

kk no national origin talk here. where is jed? where is the other greek posters? kid is the hoover in my book. great hands, thats the thing. got some nice, easy looks and this kid will knock them down. great kid, nice game. the one big knock is his ft shooting, when he takes the time and sets his routine hes great from the stripe, when he bounces the ball once or twice and hurries it all, he sucks. lets be honest thats the truth. he needs to slow it all down use his 10 seconds on the line and compose himself, its not a race. id also like to see an improved rebounding effort and defense out of kof

O, its to bad thad matta cant develop a single player, cuz if he could id hate to see the improvement of othello.... end sarcasm. the kid improves nightly. hes only played a couple of years of basketball and it shows from time to time, so does his desire to play, and win. still id like to see a more concentrated effort on a complete defensive game and rebounding, including checking out and eating space.

turner, a lot has been said around these parts turner vs diebler, they played exceptionally well together tonight, i noticed chemistry and what seemed to be a positive vibe between the two. evan plays a nice game and this will improve, i look to see him get quality minutes every night. he brings a silky smoothness with size to the game that cannot be dismissed. efficient player who will do well. id really expect to see him comboed more as the year goes on.

cuse:

jimmy b, lets be honest hes a hofer but also not much of an in game coach. as much as it pains me hes a nice guy but in game adjustments, eh. you saw that tonight, i for one dont think matta is the greatest in game coach, though tonight he toyed with the hof coach. you saw one team that streetballed and played some zone against a team that showed a willingness to dictate to the other team through sets and looks along with mix matching defenses. it was interesting to see the comments from lavin about the jimmy c uconnish recruiting out in the media for cuse. not that its illegal but usually its not out in the public like that. that being said this is a young cuse team that i feel will only improve

ive got more but i have to up early in the am, to each and every one of you have a happy thanksgiving, we all have a lot to be thankful for and use this day to be reminded of that...

ps the major key to the game is now 25 and 0...

I completely agree with everything you said here. As I watched the first three games, I just got the feeling that this kid knows exactly what he is doing out there. Its the kind of stuff that doesn't show up in the box score, but that is integral to the success of the team. After watching him shoot today, seeing his textbook shooting form, its clear that he will not stay this cold for very much longer. Yes, PennBuckFan, I realize that he had 3 turnovers in this game and that our backup small forward had one more assist. But its like JO said- he just has a knack for the game that cannot be taught, and thats why he will continue to see 30+ minutes a game.

On a separate note, I was very worried about our zone defense in the first 10 minutes when Syracuse was attacking the middle and just destroying us. We dont have that Oden-like presence from last year where, if we are slow in rotating to the ball, we can still just swat it out of the air if they take it hard (Hunter's timing just isn't there yet), and in the beginning I felt like thats what we were waiting for, Oden to just reappear and rotate over to knock a layup out into the 3rd row. But Matta adjusted well in dropping the weakside wing down to front the middle and after that we pretty much dominated the game, Green's banked threes nonwithstanding.

The one thing I dont get is how are we this bad on the defensive glass. Isn't a zone supposed to help defensive rebounding by keeping more defender's close to the rim than the offense has? By my count we had 20 defensive rebounds, and they had 19 offensive rebounds. That is mind-boggling- they had almost as many offensive rebounds as we had defensive rebounds, AND we were in a zone (albeit 3-2). Thats going to get us absolutely destroyed against a team that finishes better. I feel like I could count on one hand the number of times we blocked someone out, and they were just flat out in better position than we were the entire game. It seemed like we said forget positioning, I will just outjump this guy and grab this one, and the only person we have who can out-athlete other teams for rebounds is Hunter. Seems like that is fundamental basketball that we just aren't bothering with, but maybe there is something I am missing here.

All in all, a VERY good game. I harped on the negatives a lot, because everyone else has already hit all the positives pretty well. The one other thing I wanted to comment on, someone else mentioned it (27?)- it was amazing how quietly Koufos scored 24 points. They flashed a halftime stat line that said he had 15 points and I said no freaking way. He isn't flashy, he isn't going to make those Eric Gordon-WOW plays, but he is a tremendous offensive threat that hopefully somehow will be overlooked by our opponents. Yeah right.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

As long as Syracuse doesn't go ape shit from 3pt land, I have a good feeling about this one. I think Kufos will be a huge force in this game.

Bucks 69
Cuse 64

Good call on Koufos. Of course thats kind of a likely scenario isnt it?:tongue2:

JO - CB40

You guys were absolutely correct on our earlier discussion. I was very surprised by two things in this game: Koufos' passing ability and Diebler's aggressiveness.

I'm not suprised to see the Butler of '05-'06 return at the point - he's looks like a steady rock out there.

But Syracuse is not a good team.... yet. They have A LOT of talent. But that is not a team. Jimmy B had to be scratching whatever hair was left on his head to try and figure out how his team could be so undisciplined on both sides of the floor.

This was a huge win tonight and we showed our versatility. Koufos is a major talent, his ability to play anywhere on the floor opens the court for everyone else. Teams have to respect his ability to hit the three and that is a huge advantage for Hunter down low.

Butler...........typical senior performance.....hit a few key threes and set the pace of the game.

Koufos..........great performance. Scary thing is.....he has only scratched the surface of how good he can become. Great ready Big Ten.

Hunter.........always active, brings energy and his length gave Syracuse problems.......always in the right place to score easy buckets in the paint.

Lighty.........played in some foul trouble but got us off early with his three. Solid performance.

Diebler........he is getting more comfortable, starting to look to drive and that will open things up for him. Solid performance that he can learn from.

Turner........it is no secret I have felt Turner has the potential to be very special. He is starting to get comfortable.

OSU enters zone, beats Syracuse

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

NEW YORK -- Ohio State made itself at home in Syracuse's second home.

On a Madison Square Garden floor where the Orange have played more than 100 games in their history, the Buckeyes beat them at their own game last night, throttling the Orange's athleticism with a scrappy zone defense in the final 30 minutes and pulling away for a 79-65 victory in a semifinal of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Freshman Kosta Koufos scored a career-high 24 points in his coming-out party in the Big Apple, and Othello Hunter was a presence at both ends of the court as the Buckeyes (3-0) advanced to the tournament championship game at 7 p.m. Friday against No. 16 Texas A&M.
The Aggies defeated Washington 77-63 in the other semifinal. Syracuse (3-1) and Washington will meet in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m.

Koufos' 24 points key Ohio State past No. 21 Syracuse

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ohio State coach Thad Matta doesn't want to anoint freshman Kosta Koufos as the next big thing just yet.
The 7-foot freshman scored a career-high 24 points to help the Buckeyes beat No. 21 Syracuse 79-65 on Wednesday night in the NIT Season Tip-Off semifinals.

"Time's going to tell," Matta said. "You spend 15 minutes with him and you know he's 18 years old. I really believe we do kids an injustice by ... he plays a good game and we blow him up."

Koufos has gotten better every game. He had 18 in his debut against Wisconsin-Green Bay and then scored 19 against Columbia to help Ohio State advance to New York.

"As good as he was, there was so much room for him to improve."
