''Time's going to tell,'' Matta said. ''You spend 15 minutes with him and you know he's 18 years old. I really believe we do kids an injustice by ... he plays a good game and we blow him up.'

The Buckeyes (3-0) will play No. 16 Texas A&M on Friday night in the championship game. The Aggies beat Washington 77-63 in the other semifinal. ''I've seen a little bit of them,'' said Matta of his finals opponent. ''I know they are big. They're huge.''

Ohio State states case vs. Syracuse

BY ROGER RUBIN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

With three first-round draft picks and a pair of seniors among its top six players, last season was special for Ohio State. Top pick Greg Oden was at center and Mike Conley Jr. was at point guard and the two freshmen steered the Buckeyes to the national title game before the NBA called.

It turns out the wreckage left from those five departures isn't wreckage at all. Ohio State put out the word Wednesday night against No. 21 Syracuse that is has the potential to be grabbing headlines again in March.
The Buckeyes rode strong three-point shooting and a tenacious zone defense to a relatively easy 79-65 victory in the late semifinal of the NIT Season Tip-Off before 8,388 at the Garden. OSU made 45% of its three-pointers and held the Orange to 36% shooting overall.

"We had a lot of unanswered questions coming into this game tonight, quite honestly, and (wondered) how we were going to respond," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "We had four guys who have played college basketball. . . . I'd never had a team that was expected to win every time it stepped on the floor and . . . that preparation has helped the (four)."

"Ohio State is without any question a Top 25 team," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said.

Nice win fellas. But without even looking at the stats I can probably figure out how this "upset" was managed. Their streetballers were taking low percentage dribble up jumpers and OSU shot well from the outside?
Well the 9-20 from 3-point range surely helped. I'm going to have to see the responses in thread about Syracuse's tactics as we were hosting out-of-town guests last night and I got to see none of this. :(

One thing that definitely stands tall from the Box Score is the job that Koufos has been doing, 24 points - wow. Kid just keeps rising up.
(Can you imagine how prolific at scoring this team will be once Diebler hits his stride?)

jimotis, your "score more points" theory proves out again!!!

Hey, how cool is this win? My gosh, it's like Matta is trying to keep pace with the football program ---- in a "reloading year", contend for the national championship anyway.

Of course, the Big Ten is no good in basketball either!!!!!!!

I didn't see the game but the most glowing report was by the NY writer.

It could be a great year.

Go Bucks!

Ohio State has another talented 7-footer in Kosta Koufos.
The Greek coaches knew Kosta Koufos was a gem was after the 18-and-under world championships last summer. But Koufos announced his presence on the U.S. stage against Syracuse.

I didn't regard Syracuse's game as so much undisciplined as just mistake-prone. Devendorf of course has always been, and will always be, undisciplined (he reminds me so much of Tony Stockman), but Flynn just had a bad night. Aside from Devendorf I would not characterize the 'Cuse as "streetballers."

Donte Green is very impressive, and I continue to love Paul Harris's game. Harris also showed great sportsmanship, I thought.

Diebler played his best game by far (though he continues his poor shooting from the field), and the rebounding differential was, IMO, very misleading; when the game was tight the Buckeyes got every meaningful rebound, both offensively and defensively. I was astounded this morning when I read the box score, because I thought Othello pretty much owned the paint when it mattered.

Great game by Butler, and Koufos is a real offensive force. On to A&M!

edit- watching the Great Alaska Shootout between scUM and Butler and right before half is a crowd shot of 2 Buckeye fans, one in an A.J. Hawk jersey. Nice to see Buckeye fans in Alaska. Go Bucks!

I saw that too and it caught me totally off-guard. Another example of why the OSU/scUM rivalry is the best: Buckeye fans showing up at a scUM game to rub their OSU gear in scUM's face. Love it!!
