Ohio State 73 Miami (Fl.) 68 (Final)

bingo. Its been a long time since, I watched a college game coached like that .A complete different team by half-time, Matta is a great coach . He might have some Woody in him.

You have to wonder what was missing on last year's team. Matta's teams have always had that fight in them - but not in 2007.

so i was looking at the rankings, and we are in the high 20's in both polls. does this win put them into the top 25?

yes.

I would say voters would be reluctant b/c McClinton missed 3/4 of the game. But how many voters will even know about it? Polls are a joke.

That being said, C'MON top 25.

Honestly, at this point, I hope not. I'd rather our boys feel slighted for now instead of possibly feeling too good about themselves. There's still plenty of room for improvement in some areas.

I really want to beat Notre Dame's asses this Saturday.

even with a loss to Ntre Ame saturday we get into the top 25?

they dont have Harangody but they can sure knock down the 3 ball (they hit 19 3s tonight vs South Dakota)

gonna have to do a good job defending the perimeter to beat them

Not if we lose to Notre Dame. Rankings are pointless anyways.

I'm just happy to see this team show heart and toughness in a road environment.

Turner is the key to this season, and there's no way to stress this enough. The way he goes, Ohio State goes IMO. Buford could develop into a comparable player, but right now, Turner is our best scorer and creator. He just makes plays. Lighty has been playing great wing and interior defense, Diebler is hitting shots he wasn't hitting last year, Simmons and Crater are showing that they should be more than capable at the point spot. Mullens seems to be figuring somethings out, though slowly. I'm not worried about him though. I think eventually everything will "click" for him, but he's just not there yet in terms of the offense and defense. He's showing signs of getting there though.

Again, I just love the make-up of this team and can't wait to watch them progress through the year.

when do the rankings come out? i guess if they don't come out between now and saturday this game means nothing with a loss to the domers.

A couple of observations here at the half. We are playing our first talented foe and its been pretty illuminating.

Our team defense especially our play in the passing lanes is great. Our man D isn't nearly as good. The Miami players are getting the first step every time they put the ball down. It is unbelievable that they aren't exploiting this especially when you consider how difficult it has been for them to get open looks moving the ball.

Our no better than average rebounding ability is really hurting us. If we are going to rely on our D we simply cannot allow offensive rebounds after forcing a team to take contested 3's at the shot clock. There are a couple of reasons that we are not performing well in this area. Lighty is not a power forward and he cannot rebound like one. Playing 4 guards and 1 seven footer isn't going to cut it against the top 25. Also, it looks to me as though Mullens has been really surprised going against quality bigs. He was showing me a lack of fundamentals but since about the 5 minute mark it looks as though he has really picked up the intensity so I am going to forgive him that.

This is one of the worst offenses I have ever seen. Period. And we won't get better. For some reason that I can't quite discern our offense involves passing the ball from the point to the sg at the top of the key while each of them are 10 feet from the 3 point line. At this point the sg might dribble it a few times possibly trying to wish away the defender in front of him or waiting for one of his team mates to get so open that he can zip a pass into him from that far away. In general neither of these things happen so he passes it back to the point who has maybe shuffled his feet a bit but for all intensive purposes is still 10 feet from the 3. Another couple of passes around the perimeter and a contested 3!

A couple of things go through my mind at this point. Number one, what should I smack my head against next. Number two, if we aren't going to play offense why don't we just get our best 3 point shooter to dribble out the shot clock at the top of the key and take a contested 3. This would limit the possessions in the game and not hurt our offensive efficiency in the least.

Finally a couple of notes about the individual players.

Crater: The kid is my one hope. He is very quick with his dribble and can penetrate at will. He seems to be the only player we have that can create for others.

Lighty: He is a very good player. But it is never going to turn into production in this system. He is a midrange kind of player and unfortunately we don't put the ball inside the 3 point arc unless a guard is running to the basket, leaping into the air, and throwing a pass to the opposition because the offense doesn't react.

Diebler: His defense is unbelievably bad which isn't too surprising considering his frame. He overplays the passing lanes I expect to compensate and this frequently gets him out of position. It doesn't look to me as though he can create for himself which is puzzling considering his high school career. His 3 pointer is sound fundamentally but it isn't falling consistently. I suspect it is because he needs to go inside before he heats up outside. Unfortunately again that means we won't be seeing him play well or score consistently this year.

Buford: I don't know if it is because he refuses to play within the system or he simply hasn't learned enough of it to have stunted himself but he seems to be the only player who is a real threat to take take it to the basket. Unfortunately he seems to use the space to take jumpers more than move inside which is what our offense desperately needs. Haven't seen much of him probably because he doesn't know the system which again is probably why he is using his athleticism unlike the rest of the team.

BTW, that Miami player showed absolutely no remorse after blatantly bear clawing Crater. If I were making the decisions he wouldn't be playing the rest of the season. Also found the crowds reaction interesting. You stay classy Miami.

Thanks, Captain Optimism! Your lack of hope brought about this victory!

And god dammit shut the fuck up ESPN...

Like I said in the Reds' thread awhile back, you know it's bad when cbf40 is dropping the f-bomb.

Evan Turner at the point forward is the answer for this offense...

Amen to that.

Wow. Fantastic game. The second-half offense was beyond impressive. How in the world do you follow a 22 point half with a 51 point half. Unreal.

I apologize to Lighty for suggesting he was an offensive liability. With Turner back in, Lighty was freed up big time to get into the lane instead of being forced to settle for jumpers. Great second half, David!

Deeeeeeeebs!

Need some help here. Their leading scorer didn't seem to play at all in the 2nd half.....what was going on with that? I kept waiting for the announcers to mention it....but I don't think they ever did.....

One final note, I don't think we, as OSU fans, should be calling for travelling too often, considering what they let Turner get away with when he's handling the ball. If I were an opposing fan, I'd be hoarse from the screams for palming the ball.

I can't believe you're poking fun and taking a swipe at the ESPN guys.

there's a difference between palming and just flat out traveling. I hardly even look for carrying anymore, it has just become a part of the game. Occasionally, when someone carries it so badly it must be called, we see it. Unless it is the NBA. But for a guy to be able to take 3 steps, shuffle his feet off of a pivot foot, and be able to switch pivot feet under the hoop is just ridiculous.

Miami got away with WAY MORE traveling tonight.

That accidentally swiped at me first. If they'd been called for that, I never would have had to take a swipe at them.

Loved the last 10 minutes of the game where our offense was giving it to Turner and letting him drive to the lane. Turner is unreal when he takes over a game like that, then we have a dead on shooter in Diebler he can dish it to when he causes the double/triple team. Just a matter of time before Crater takes over the starting PG job imo. He is a lot faster, plays better defense and overall point than Simmons. Only thing Simmons really has is the abililty to shoot but he would be a good backup. It seemed like Lighty fed off of Turner and Diebler late and started creating some things himself. This team should be a real threat to win the Big Ten and should only improve every game from here on out.
