Men's Basketball
Second Half Rally Lifts Buckeyes Past No. 21 Miami, 73-68
By John Porentas
The young Buckeyes (4-0) might be just plain naive. Or, they might actually know something the rest of the world doesn't know yet. In either case, it didn't phase them one bit them when they endured miserable shooting in the first half against No. 21 Miami (4-2) and fell behind by 14 at the end of the first period. Despite the score, they were sure that they had actually played well and that all they had to do to win the game was make the open shots they were earning.
Naivety? Hubris? Too soon to tell, but against Miami it all worked out for the Buckeyes. They turned around their shooting to go from just over 27 percent from the field in the first half to over 55 percent in the second. The result was a 15-2 run to start the second half that reduced Miami's lead to just one after OSU had been down by as many as 15 late in the first half.
"We weren't down (mentally) at the half," said sophomore guard Jon Diebler.
"We executed and got open shots, we just didn't make shots. We knew in the second half if we had the same looks we had to make them,"

Actually....Crater took a swipe at the ball and missed.....striking the Miami player in the face which looked like an accident and then after passing the ball which was possibly 1-2 seconds later....the Miami player struck Crater in the face and it was not an accident.......they missed the foul on Crater but it was not intentional on his part and it is obvious that McClinton did react and his reaction was to intentionally strike Crater in the face.....not sure how you can argue it wasn't intentional...

Miami coach says McClinton was reacting to being hit

Miami coach Frank Haith was even more angered Wednesday morning after reviewing the game tape of senior guard Jack McClinton's ejection from Tuesday night's loss to Ohio State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
And now he must wait to see if the ACC will take any further action and keep McClinton out of Saturday's game at Kentucky.
McClinton, a first-team all-ACC guard and the Hurricanes' leading scorer (15.2 points per game), was ejected through the first half for slapping Ohio State guard Anthony Crater in the face.
A review of the game tape shows that McClinton, who had the ball and was standing in front of Ohio State's bench, was reacting to Crater swiping at him. Crater covered his face for a moment after the contact and remained in the game.

More quality journalism there. Crater was doubled over covering his face while the play continued and SlapJack McClinton got a wide open 3 as a result. Even after the shot was made and play was halted, Crater was STILL bent over holding his face.

Christ, these hacks make it sound like Crater didn't even get touched.

McClinton had a right to be upset. A foul should have been called when Crater inadvertently struck his face. But to twist this in any way other than Crater's contact being accidental and McClinton's an intentional retaliation is fucking garbage.

Right on.

I was pretty disgusted at the announcers who #1 probably mentioned no less than 20 times that "McClinton has been ejected." And #2 that they kept saying how he was only reacting and how Crater hit him first. Man, what a bunch of crap. Noopy was playing hard defense and accidently got a hand up on the guys face. That happens. But swinging back should not. Period. Seriously poor decision by McClinton to slap back. That just can't happen and he absolutely needed to be sat down to think about that. I mean what...everytime someone fouls him, it's okay to poke back? No...no place for that in the game and I'm disgusted that the announcers made it sound like the kid got wronged or was a victim. Ridiculous.

Ok. I'm done with the rant.

"After watching the tape I was disappointed and I felt that Jack reacted to being hit in the face,'' Haith said. "I was told by the official, Bryan Kersey, that [Crater] had bloodied his nose and that's why Jack was ejected. I never saw any blood. The kid stayed in the game. Jack was reacting to being hit in the face.''

Great attitude, Coach. It's that kind of dismissive, excuse-ridden B.S. that will perpetuate this type of behavior in Miami players. Miami's coach had a chance to stand up and take the high road, saying that slapping your opponent in the face has no place in basketball and will not be tolerated. Sadly, by making an excuse for his player here, he demonstrates that he fails to realize the consequence of his dismissive reponse to such poor sportsmanship on his impressionable players.

There is a huge difference between (a) Crater's swiping at a ball his opponent is holding and accidentally hitting that opponent in the face and (b) purposefully attempting to slap your opponent in the face because you are frustrated. The former is an unfortunate consequence of aggressive defense (and admittedly a foul), and the latter is a childish, bush league move that has no place in sports. Too bad Miami's coach and ESPN's announcers/journalists do not realize the difference.

To to along with your thoughts I love this part of the article:

Haith is concerned that future opponent could try to bait McClinton.

"Jack is a great kid and I don't see that being an issue with Jack, but I do worry how other teams may try to antagonize him, physically taunting him,'' Haith said.
Is the coach setting up an excuse for later down the road if something else happens with McClinton or is he worried because McClinton has a short temper? Either way that is a bush league answer by Haith. The correct response is "We will sit down with Jack and make sure this doesn't happen again."

This is bullshit... I mean, if you take a charge, and the refs don't call it.. why can't you just punch the guy in the face?

I disapprove of this post. If it isn't deleted in the next 2 seconds, I'm going to kick bkb's ass.

I agree with all of that except for the time it took him to retaliate. It was almost immediately afterwards. Crater's hand was moving to try to tip the ball as McClinton was passing it, and McClinton swiped back right after he was smacked in the face. He didn't get a hand in the face, then pass the ball, and then take the swipe.

I think it's still an ejectable offense, but I don't think it's accurate to give an impression that McClinton thought about it for a second before acting.
