I think Simmons is the key to the game for Ohio State

if he handles the point well and limits turnovers and can hit some key outside shots I think they come out on top

hopefully Lighty steps up his game and plays better than he has been as well

We need another great game by Evan TurnOVer, Lighty needs to step up, Dallas can not get into foul trouble, we need good minutes by BJ, and nice penetration by Buford off the bench. Miami's athletic, and will use penetration against us. We need to shut them down, and avoid collapsing in on them and getting hurt with the kick outs. Our length around the perimeter will come in handy.

those are all good points. i like the nickname for Evan (hopefully he gives us good reason not to use it anymore). on defense, its always the same story. when we get beat bad, our perimeter defense is non-existant.

Buckeyes look to prove their early-season worth in showdown vs. ACC's Miami

Terry Gilliam/Associated PressOhio State's Dallas Lauderdale (52) will have a tall task in competing against Miami's deep roster of big men when the Buckeyes and Hurricanes play Tuesday night in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge.
Tuesday: Ohio State at Miami, 7 p.m., ESPN
Previewing the Challenge

COLUMBUS -- The last time Ohio State's basketball team was ranked, it lost to a team from Florida. That came in the 2007 national title game against the Florida Gators, when the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes ended the brief Greg Oden-Mike Conley era at Ohio State. Though last season produced an NIT championship for Ohio State, it never produced an appearance in the top 25. So when Ohio State visits Miami Tuesday night as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, playing for conference reputation is swell. But the Buckeyes, at 3-0 and currently No. 30 in the AP poll and No. 28 in the coaches poll as part of the "others receiving votes," are playing for their own reputation first.
"I think it's a really big game for us, as long as we stay focused and come out ready to play, and hopefully it puts us in that top 25 ranking we haven't been in," junior David Lighty said.
Miami (4-1) is ranked No. 22 in the coaches poll and No. 21 in the AP. Ohio State was 3-7 against ranked opponents last season and is 15-18 against ranked opponents in the five years under coach Thad Matta.

Men's basketball: Buckeyes take first flight from the nest

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 3:14 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A year ago at this time, Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta wondered whether all of his first-year players knew how to operate the slide cards to get in their hotel rooms while they were in New York for the NIT Season Tip-Off. Two nights ago, Matta got two calls from another rookie about his travel dress code for the players. Was it OK to wear khaki pants on the charter flight?
"I'm like, 'Can you ask me about setting a screen or defending a certain action?' " Matta said yesterday.
"I think that kind of says the battles that we're still (fighting). What are we teaching? We're teaching how to dress and how to play on the road."
After starting the season with three straight home wins over teams they were expected to beat, the Buckeyes step out of their comfort zone for the first time tonight when they take on their first ranked opponent and do it on the road. They play at No. 21 University of Miami in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

Is anyone else surprised that we are still in that silly zone this season. I was not a big fan of it last year. I think it negates Turner and Lighty's quickness on D. I think it can take a players head out of the game as well when they are standing around on D.

Last year, everyone said the zone was a way to keep Butler fresh. Who are we trying to keep fresh this year? I say unleash the hounds and pressure the ball.

Just my opinion but maybe Thad feels that against Miami his players are not quite ready to handle one on one just yet. He said he is still searching for the right ones to out there to handle a man to man. The quick transition of going from one on one to a zone has to be a quick decision thing and the players have to be ready to recognize that switch instantly.

You can call me surprised that we are still playing zone defense this season. I don't know if Matta thinks that Dallas and Mullens are not ready to play man-to-man and are afraid that they will get into early foul trouble. Just not sure because the other guys in the starting rotation are fairly athletic as you have mentioned and I would think that they would all be able to play man-to-man.

I just can't understand why he keeps playing the zone defense and he has really not come out and said anything about it. Playing zone really hurts the defensive rebounding plus I think it takes away the opportunity for us to create more turnovers. It's just strange and I really have no explanation.
