OHIO STATE--68 TENNESSEE--66 (Final)

Yeah, it was nice to see the kids get a big win against a top 20 team. They needed this for their confidence. Oden played outstanding, you can tell he is getting more confidence and appears to be starting to use his right hand more. Conley is scary good. I can't wait to see what this group of kids does come March. Now that football is over, I can devote more of my Buckeye time to the basketball program.

OSU's Oden dominates Tennessee

Buckeyes scratch out season's first win vs. ranked opponent

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

COLUMBUS - Greg Oden's debut for Ohio State was Dec. 2, but Saturday might be remembered as his coming-out party.
And that can be taken in the most literal sense. The 7-foot freshman center said the Tennessee defense got so aggressive that a Volunteer pulled down his shorts, and he believes he mooned the crowd at Value City Arena.
``I think my butt was out for a second,'' Oden said with a straight face. ``I'm dead-serious, too. I felt a little wind chill.''

Lewis? shot sure

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Thad Matta said he got the shot he wanted.
For today, at least, he can enjoy the benefit of the doubt.
One point down with 23.9 seconds left, Ohio State rebounded a missed Tennessee free throw and, rather than call timeout and subject itself to the Volunteers? intense inbounds pressure, pushed upcourt for a final, winning attempt yesterday in Value City Arena. It came with 11.2 seconds still left on the clock, from outside the three-point arc and off the hand of Ron Lewis, whose only basket of the afternoon had been a layup earlier in the half.

RANKING RIGHT UP THERE Ron Lewis (12) helps Ohio State men?s basketball team get its first win over a ranked opponent this season with a 68-66 decision over No. 16

COLUMBUS Ron Lewis finally gave Ohio State?s fans something to smile about. Lewis hit a 3-pointer with 11.2 seconds left to help the fifth-ranked Buckeyes beat No. 16 Tennessee, 68-66, on Saturday.

Ok, let me just say I am a big Vols fan and not very fond of the Buckeyes so that game hurt a lot.

Oden played a great game, unfortunately yesterday was his day for a career best game.

both these teams look like good teams... I think it is safe to say that neither team played their best yesterday. Unfortunately, we will likely drop from the rankings in at least the coaches poll.

I don't think that last shot you hit was a three, and I am sure your guy stepped out of bounds, but the bottom line is we should have hit those free throws to put it away when we had the chance... That and started the second half better... Anyways, good game, and congrats to OSU.

It's too bad Oden still has a wrap on his right hand. No telling what he would have done against the Vols with both hands. OSU still goes up by 1 with a two point shot, so I am not sure what your gripe is. Your team took two point shots to tie at the end, so the Buckeye's last basket had no effect on the Vol's last series. Who are you referring to being out of bounds?

Jamar Butler grabbed a rebound near the corner and it appeared he was out-of-bounds (both feet actually).

Good win for the Bucks. They needed one. Back into conference play now. Go Bucks!

What did replay show? And while we are in the excuse mode, a point of emphasis rule for this season was no lower body undercutting in the paint. Oden must have felt like he had a third leg after yesterday's game.

This team bothers me. Discipline on both sides of the ball is a BIG PROBLEM. And I'm not so certain it can be attributed simply to inexperience anymore.

In the first half, Conley throws the ball away, and Lewis gets an intentional foul. But if you watch the replay, Conley just stands there and holds his head after the turnover. He was in the best position to force a difficult shot in transition if he just runs back on defense. Instead, he just stood there like this was AAU ball.

Matta leaves Conley in, doesn't say a word to him about it. Conley comes back and hits 2 three-pointers, and it's like it never happened. But that's bullshit. It's one thing to make a mental error... but it's an entirely different thing to not put out the effort to make up for the error. Conley should have been benched at that point to teach the team that effort errors are inexcusable.

And that's why this team couldn't put away a clearly inferior Tennessee team. Because they're undisciplined. Matta's "cool guy" character landed Ohio State an unbelievable class. But I wonder whether he's a very good teacher for these kids.

The out of bounds thing should be moot anyways, the Tennessee guard traveled his ass off on the first lay-up attempt. Not to mention Lofton got away with two blatant charges on drives before the final play.

And Oden isn't lying about getting held and pulled. It happens every freaking possession, someone is pulling him or pushing him, yet it never gets called.
