THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- It took 3 1/2 years, but the cool facade of Jamar Butler finally cracked last night.
"We keep trying to be positive, we're OK and blah, blah, blah," he said. "I'm done with that. I'm done with it. I'm just going to start going at guys and tell them like it is."
You might suspect Ohio State's 53-48 loss to Iowa in Carver- Hawkeye Arena was all about the Buckeyes shooting less than 40 percent for only the fourth time this season and scoring their fewest points in 14 games.
You would be wrong. Notwithstanding Iowa's point total, the lowest allowed by the Buckeyes since they routed the Hawkeyes by 31 points in Columbus last month, it was all about effort -- and the Buckeyes' lack of it, especially on defense.
"Guys weren't ready to go from the (opening) tip," said Butler, who has started on two straight Big Ten championship teams. "I could look in guys' eyes and just tell we weren't ready to go."
Coach Thad Matta called a timeout less than eight minutes into the second half to chew out his team for giving the Hawkeyes two open shots and five straight points after the Buckeyes had narrowed a seven-point deficit to three.

"I'm going to have off games here and there," Butler said. "We've got to have somebody else step up and get double figures at least."
"I don't know if it's possible to win the Big Ten now, but if they care about playing in March, they better pick their game up," Butler said of his teammates.
"The potential is there, but guys aren't mentally tough. They don't have it upstairs yet. Me and (Matta) talk, and we don't know what we can do to get guys ready to go night in and night out. Some guys are ready to go and some guys aren't."

While I agree it might be nice to see Dallas and Wallace get some minutes I have to believe that Thad does not think that they will make the team any better right now. We have to trust our coach.OSUBasketballJunkie;1082285; said:After getting a full nights sleep I still feel like this team is underachieving at this point......Matta needs to take a hard look at Lauderdale and Wallace in my opinion......get people on the court who will at least play hard and with some intensity on a consistent basis.....
That's just not Butler's personality. He has never been a vocal leader but maybe since he is getting close to the end of his senior year he has probably said enough is enough.Best Buckeye;1082288; said:Gotta disagree somewhat Jax, Jamar IS the senior leadership and if he sees that they are not ready before ,or during the game he should be in their faces right then not after the game is over.
