Ohio State 48, Iowa 53 (Final)

Jaxbuck, I know that you are as big a Buckeye fan as I am. I also know that you are as disappointed as I am.
This team , as you say , hasn't come together. Some teams never do even though they may have all the talent in the world because we both know talent isn't enough to win all the time. This may be the reason why this team isn't progressing as we all hoped it would. I don't claim to know the reason.
I have been a Buckeye fan for 51 years and I have learned , very painfully, that we cannot field a championship team every year . I used to bleed Scarlet and Grey and when they lost I almost wouldn't talk to anyone for days. I learned to stem the blood loss from a gusher to just seeping now.
Oh I still ache when they lose and I am disappointed but not as much as the players must be.
So here I am with the realization that this team won't get to the NC game and may even lose half of their remaining games and I can handle that because I am a Buckeye and they are my team. I will never lose faith in them because of that. I just accept what they are because whatever they are is what they make of themselves. Next year will be a new year and once again I will state that my Buckeyes will be undefeated until I see them lose. And I will cheer for them just as lustily as I do now.
They are what they are. My team.

A game we simply shouldn't have lost. I don't care if it was against a good young team hitting their stride and we were on the road. We just shouldn't have lost it.

Johnson went 8-13 from three. All 8 that he hit were thoroughly uncontested. The only other player on their team who had a remotely good game was Gorney, and he hit all of his shots from the outside too. Everyone says we don't go man because we don't want to expose our post defenders. But the only thing their forwards could do was hit perimeter shots. So why didn't we go man-to-man? We could have stayed out on Johnson and Gorney and forced a less talented player to beat us, which wouldn't have happened. This game is squarely on Thad. No question.

KK was 5-9. He had 4 offensive rebounds. He played like a star in the second half when he wasn't forcing 3's. And down by 3 with 3 minutes left, we pull him and start jacking up 3's that we haven't hit all game. Again, have to question Thad on this one. I know we really don't have an offense besides forcing bad threes, but that doesn't mean we can't try to do something. Lighty was drawing fouls when he was driving. KK was shooting well. Why Thad pulled him and stopped our offense on a dime was another big question for me.

Don't understand why Jamar had to play 40 minutes. I saw plenty of opportunities where PJ could have come in and played solid defense and fed KK down low for 2 or 3 minutes. But Thad didn't put him in, and you could tell Jamar was struggling at the end of the game.

I'm starting to feel like Diebler may never find his shot. I can't tell what it is, his feet seem too far apart but other than that his shot seems pure, it just simply won't go in. People are still respecting the idea of him shooting, but until he starts hitting we are going to struggle.

Turner struggled and you could tell that really hurt us, but as well as he has played I am inclined to give him a bit of a pass. He still played good defense.

Butler had an off night shooting. If he shoots anywhere near his season averages from 3 we win that game, but he just couldn't hit tonight. Hopefully he will be well rested for Indiana, we will desperately need him.

Like I said, I put this game squarely on Thad. He should have adjusted to their kid not missing from three, he should have left KK in when he was beginning to be most effective, he should have let Butler rest. But he didn't, and we have to move on.

This game really hurt our Tourney chances, we are going to have beat Indiana and Michigan State at home, and either Wisky at home or Minny on the road to make the tourney now.

Last thing, was anyone else INCREDIBLY annoyed with the announcer? I felt like I was listening to John Madden announce a basketball game- "If you make a basket from behind the three point arc, your team gets three points." Thank you Captain Obvious.

Iowa 53 Ohio State 48
Butler left frustrated after listless loss

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- It took 3 1/2 years, but the cool facade of Jamar Butler finally cracked last night.

"We keep trying to be positive, we're OK and blah, blah, blah," he said. "I'm done with that. I'm done with it. I'm just going to start going at guys and tell them like it is."
You might suspect Ohio State's 53-48 loss to Iowa in Carver- Hawkeye Arena was all about the Buckeyes shooting less than 40 percent for only the fourth time this season and scoring their fewest points in 14 games.
You would be wrong. Notwithstanding Iowa's point total, the lowest allowed by the Buckeyes since they routed the Hawkeyes by 31 points in Columbus last month, it was all about effort -- and the Buckeyes' lack of it, especially on defense.
"Guys weren't ready to go from the (opening) tip," said Butler, who has started on two straight Big Ten championship teams. "I could look in guys' eyes and just tell we weren't ready to go."
Coach Thad Matta called a timeout less than eight minutes into the second half to chew out his team for giving the Hawkeyes two open shots and five straight points after the Buckeyes had narrowed a seven-point deficit to three.

Jamar Butler says almost word for word what people here have been saying all year.

"We keep trying to be positive, we're OK and blah, blah, blah," he said. "I'm done with that. I'm done with it. I'm just going to start going at guys and tell them like it is."

"Guys weren't ready to go from the (opening) tip," said Butler, who has started on two straight Big Ten championship teams. "I could look in guys' eyes and just tell we weren't ready to go."

"I'm going to have off games here and there," Butler said. "We've got to have somebody else step up and get double figures at least."

"I don't know if it's possible to win the Big Ten now, but if they care about playing in March, they better pick their game up," Butler said of his teammates.

"The potential is there, but guys aren't mentally tough. They don't have it upstairs yet. Me and (Matta) talk, and we don't know what we can do to get guys ready to go night in and night out. Some guys are ready to go and some guys aren't."

Go get em Jamar. My respect for this kid just went up even higher than it already was, which is saying a lot.

He's pissed and rightly so, he has to be party to seeing his 2 year B10 championship run snapped as a SR because a bunch of freshmen can't pull their collective heads out of their collective asses. The galling part is the 3rd one was there for the taking, the B10 is very mediocre this year.

I agree with him that the hand holding positive stuff has to stop. Scream, kick, bite, run them till they puke do what it takes, find the ones with some heart and play them. Let the rest sit or transfer.

After getting a full nights sleep I still feel like this team is underachieving at this point......Matta needs to take a hard look at Lauderdale and Wallace in my opinion......get people on the court who will at least play hard and with some intensity on a consistent basis.....

Gotta disagree somewhat Jax, Jamar IS the senior leadership and if he sees that they are not ready before ,or during the game he should be in their faces right then not after the game is over. Or two weeks ago or whenever.

I do agree with OBJ that Dallas should have played more, He looked real good while he was in last night. And Wallace could have played some minutes as , he is very aggressive to the basket on both sides.

I was too bummed out last night to even post. What a pathetic performance.:! The guys really showed no enthusiasm at all. Many of you can talk about all of the other players but the only real player that we have on this team that comes to play every game is Butler. Sure, he had a bad shooting night but does he have to carry the load every game and Hill does not really an option.

Like some of you, I wanted Thad to go man to man and get out of the zone defense. However, after a "good" night's rest, I know that Matta knows more about basketball than I ever will been probably doesn't want the team he coaches to lose games. So there must have been a reason for him not to go man to man.

I thought Lighty, Turner, and KK had turned the corner but obviously there is no a lot of work that needs to be done. Lighty and Turner had the main responsibility of getting to Johnson and they did not do it. KK is 2 feet away from the basket and can't dunk the ball. He has problems holding onto passes and rebounds. For such a supposedly talented player, he has been very disappointing to me. I can see why Thad gets frustrated with him and sits him down.

If we make it to the dance, we will be very lucky and in order to do it and I think we might have to win out. We might be able to lose at Indiana but that's it. After that performance last night, even the games against the weasels concern me.

I was glad to finally see Butler go public and say when he has probably been thinking the entire season.

I also don't want to hear anymore about this team being young. Take a look at Purdue.

I get the feeling that Thad and Jamar have tried to be too gentle with the freshmen and its gotten them to where they are now but I see your point.

Agree 100% with OSUBJ, give me the 5 who will play the hardest.

While I agree it might be nice to see Dallas and Wallace get some minutes I have to believe that Thad does not think that they will make the team any better right now. We have to trust our coach.

Obviously Matta knows more about the game than most on here, but if that is the case.......why no man defense? I mean he is a man to man coach and he recruited this team.......so it begs to question if Matta missed on this group at least on the defensive end.......I mean are we uncapable of playing a few possesions of man to change the look or god forbid the pace of the game.......is KK that bad of a defensive player? Their are some hard questions to be asked about this group......there has been little to no improvement by our young guys......they are not buying in to what Matta is preaching.....

.
That's just not Butler's personality. He has never been a vocal leader but maybe since he is getting close to the end of his senior year he has probably said enough is enough.
