Johnson was like 8 out of ten on threes, that's not a poor outside shooting team. they wer 8 of 10 in the second half on threes ,thats not a poor outside shooting team.
I know Matta has trained this team on a zone Defense but I do not believe in any defense that leaves a shooter all alone on 1/2 of the court time after time. It doesn't surprise me at all that Iowa hit all those shots, hell it was like they were shooting in a three point shooting contest without a time limit.

I know, which is why Matta was wrong to continue using the zone when he should have switched to man.

The Zone was never working at anytime throughout this game. I know this team has been playing zone this year, but we need to be able to mix it up. Being a one trick pony doesn't make a great team.

Annoying loss - but it is very hard to win games when you can't hit shots. I still like this team and Thad... its just been amazing how bad the shooting can be. Hard for me to complain about much other than shooting when they're holding teams to under 55. That is putting themselves in a position to win, no question.

Yep but it's clear that the learning curve for him and the rest of the young fellas is a little more steep the people thought going into the year. He still can be a great player and shooter for us....hell he has 3 years to improve. Right now though I just don't see a guy on the team that is able to become a big scorer anytime soon.

I agree completely. I guess Im a little ignorant bc Ive never played competitive basketball, but Ive always thought that you can shoot the ball or you cant. If you average 44pts in HS, I would think that means you can shoot. If he got 24 one night that would mean hed have to get 64 the next night. i know that Deebs can shoot, but i guess confidence and momentum are pretty big and somethig has obviously gotten into his head.

Johnson's normal rate was 35.9% making 3 out of each 8.4 attempts.

With this game, which he shot treys at nearly a 62% clip he has upped his season average to over 36%.

Oh, yes, the season averages for the Iowa team include 5 other shooters with 3-point average efficiency over 33%.

The Buckeyes? They have 5 shooters who are capable of getting treys at a clip over 30%, two others over 25%.

Tonight - well you know the score.

Yes, Ohio State should have played tougher D and a different scheme, but credit Iowa for giving few good looks at 3-point range to the Buckeye shooters. (And yes, question why at the 4+ minute mark we were not driving to the basket - with Koufos on the floor).

The zone could have worked tonight but they didn't keep the proper spacing JMO. Too many times we didn't even have one defender on a side of the court.

Yep and believe it or not I watched the back 2 yelling out to the wing defender that Johnson was out there and they didnt move to cover him.

The point for Iowa maintained Butler and a 2nd defender most of the night with help, when he wasnt even shooting from out there. The wing defender for us should not have closed so often and so high on him leaving his wing wide open for a block defender to have to run out on him. Poor communication out top all night long.

3 points about todays game:

1) Tempo

I just get sick of watching other teams dictate the flow of the game. We need to force teams to play our game. Not sit back and let them do what they want. We never went back tot he trap that got us back into the game against MSU.

2) The Zone (not the one that Johnson was in for Iowa)

The zone has served us well this year....but their are times when you need to come out of it and today was one. You can't just sit back and let them bomb threes all night. It would have been nice to switch up defenses on them with about 7 or 8 minutes to go. They seemed to be in a good rythm against the zone and if nothing else it would have made them try something else on offense. Anything else would have been better then Iowa getting all those open looks.

3) Substitutions

I was disappointed the Lauderdale didn't get back in the game. He played a great stretch in the first half. got a steel, a couple boards, and really knocked some guys around. Also, we need to find a way to get Butler some rest so he is fresh at the end of the game. Butler just didn't have his legs at the end of the game. Thirdly, Matta has praised Diebler's defense over the last few ball games, and then he sees no action until under 3 minutes to go in the second half. We needed a spark on defense in the second half. Fourthly (is that a word), Koufus was playing great in the second half. He should have stayed in the game towards the end and then we could have tried to work the ball into him when we were down three instead of jacking up long range bombs.

Not much of anything positive you can take from this game except we have another one on our schedule.

I find it difficult to understand why Matta and staff is unwilling to switch to man for at least a few stretches tonight.....the zone was killing us....no excuses. Matta should take some of the heat for this loss....zero adjustments......

My question is why.....against Iowa specifically we did not at least give them a different look on the defensive end and switch to man......use our athletic ability and make them go around us.....I understand trying to save Butler, but lets be honest.....tonight we got beat for a lack of defense.

I am shaking my head in disbelief.......just a pathetic performance from everyone involved....my frustration with this team has reached an all time high tonight......we do not do anything well......we are average at best at this point and we have zero understanding of how to play off one of the best players in the Big Ten in Butler......we have a long way to go to even be considered for the tournament......

We keep seeing the same things over and over, its just the quality/effort from the opponent that dictates if the SOS will cost us a game or not.

Some things I am sure of at this point/want to vent:

1) These kids don't have "it" upstairs. They aren't bought into what Matta is preaching. There is no improvement.

2) This season is done. This team has too many glaring weakneses and inconsistencies to be taken seriously even in the mediocre B10.

3) None of the freshmen have impressed me save for Turner. I've been patient and waited and waited. I've tried to not be critical but we have 9 games left and if they were going to get better they would have by now, Diebler and KK were vastly overrated.

4) I still can't get over the fact we are fielding teams at OSU in football and mens Bball that the coaches don't feel are athletic enough to play man to man defenses. I just can't believe that we don't have the athletes to do it.

5) If PJ Hill is the PG next year I may not be able to watch.

Anyway, I'm pissed. Being middle of the road in a middle of the road conference is simply not good enough. Bring in the next class, this one needs serious help.
