Ohio State 47, #15 Texas A&M 79 (Final)

First let me state I am 100% old school so you young pups out there give me a break; that being said I for one do not want my Buckeyes to become known as a one and done recruiting school. I have absolutely nothing against Oden et al but recruiting players like the 3 freshman who exited early is going to leave the cubbards bare for the next year and we are gonna see more blowouts like this in the future. I have absolute confidence that Matta will have this group very competitive by the end of the year but I wish to hell we would remember that we are watching student athletes, not guys who are just using the gift of a free education as a stepping stone to the pros. If that is all they are interested in let em play in a developmental league and leave college basketball to actual college students. I would rather see players who stay for at least 3 years and grow up into fine student athletes representing our university, than to see us recruit guys who have no interest in getting a degree; they are keeping the real student athlete from getting a scholarship.

Didn't get to see the game, but the stats tell the story pretty well. Outrebounded by 15, shot 24% overall and 21% from 3, Diebler went 0-7 from 3 (how is he still this cold with form as textbook as his? I just dont get it). That said, the stats also show some positives that said this could have been a very close game if we could have hit ANYTHING at all- only 5 turnovers all night to go along with 10 steals and 2 blocked shots. We really need to learn how to rebound, I said it in the Cuse thread and evidently it was a different team, same story tonight, except this time we weren't making it rain and so we couldn't keep the game close.

Honestly, I am thrilled that we got to play this game, even if we got the shit kicked out of us. Right now, for better or worse, I am only thinking about 1 game- December 22nd vs Florida. These tests against very good basketball teams such as Syracuse, TAMU, UNC, and Butler will mean that we are very prepared going into that matchup. Couple that with Florida's schedule up to the game (0 away games, only decent opponent= loss to Florida State) and I think we are going to have a huge edge in the experience department. Of course, this kind of run will also help for the Big 10 season and the tournament, but right now I am solely focused on beating the living shit out of Florida.

BTW, our non-conference this year is pretty insane. #21 Syracuse @ MSG (we will call it an away game), #15 TAMU, #1 UNC, @#23 Butler, #24 Florida, @#7 Tennessee. Plus decent VMI and Cleveland State teams. The RPI is going to look pretty nice.

I agree with you even though I do see the need to get some high star types to be competitive. But as you state we have a great need for continuity in the program and that can only be achieved by having kids stay. By having more and more kids leave each year it could make others think about leaving also. and what happens then is that we bring in great classes every year but they have no experience. Who is going to be our point guard next year. we all know that it's not every year that we get a class like Oden's.
So it is as important , if not even more important that we get kids that will stay.

Men's basketball: OSU's shots won't fall against Texas A&M
Buckeyes miss 17 of first 18 from the field in second half

Texas A&M center DeAndre Jordan, dunking in front of Kosta Koufos, provided a strong presence inside.

NEW YORK -- There was some conjecture after a win Wednesday over No. 21 Syracuse that the Ohio State men's basketball team deserved to be ranked. Orange coach Jim Boeheim even said the Buckeyes were a top-25 team.
They might be. But they're not No. 16. Not close.
Texas A&M had that ranking last night entering the final of the NIT Season Tip-Off and put a men-vs.-boys beatdown on the young Buckeyes.
The Aggies built a six-point halftime lead by getting Kosta Koufos and Othello Hunter in foul trouble and ran off to a 70-47 victory in the second half as the Buckeyes went cold in Madison Square Garden. They missed 17 of their first 18 shots from the field and trailed by as many as 32 points late in the game.

Let me get you a subscription to Farmers' Almanac, Gramps.:tongue2:

And before you respond, I am no young pup. My fond early memories of Buckeye hoop are of Siegfried, Nowell, Lucas and Hondo. But this Jack will not go back into the Box. It's a bit late to complain about one-and-done-ers at tOSU.

MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL TEXAS A&M 70 OHIO STATE 47
Aggies too tough a gig for Bucks

New York -- Joseph Jones and Dominique Kirk gave answers any coach would be elated to hear.
"We love to play defense," the Texas A&M seniors said.
They and their teammates had already proven that.

I will keep this brief but I think this will be one of Thad's toughest coaching challenges. Prior to this year, he always had a shot blocker/rebounder/"tough guy" manning the middle. This year he does not have that player unless you consider Dallas that player but I think you saw what happened last night when Dallas was in the game. He is not ready for primetime. Without KK or Hunter in the lineup, they become very guard oriented and the guards were not hitting, except for Butler, last night.

I will wait but I think when we come up against teams who have two big guys we will have problems because KK is not mean enough yet and both him and Hunter will get pushed around. Maybe I am just basing this on one game which is unfair to the team but that one game showed some very glaring weaknesses on this team.

Also, someone needs to step up at PG or Butler will be so worn down by the midpoint of the Big 10 season he will not be able to continue at his current pace.

I worry about this team's rebounding and interior defense and hopefully Thad will bring the guys around.

I agree with others that last nights game was painful to watch. However it appeared to me to be sort of a perfect storm against us. T A&M is an experienced club with good depth, good size and good athletacism, they have guys who can shoot and guys who can break you down off the dribble. They also have a very long, strong athletic big man. They also played a good game. Not to blow their horn too much, but I do not think we will see too many teams/games with all of those factors.

One thing we lack is a scorer. Lighty is trying, Diebs is adjusting to better competition.

I also think Matta will work more on man to man defense. Butler and Lighty have proven adept at this and Turner shows potential. Hunter could be huge coming from the backside. Kosta and Deibs will improve and we have depth if they get in foul trouble.

The Bucks are young and will improve. Deibs will shoot better, Lighty and Turner will get better at slashing and finishing. Hunters face up game will improve. We will defend better and the lid will come off the basket.
We'll lose some games, but by the end of the year, I don't think many teams will have us on their wish to play list.

Pretty embarassing performance. It looked like they just gave up competing after 5 minutes of the second half. One thing I noticed last night is that when Kosta is out Butler seems to be the only real go to guy. David Lighty is going to need to become more consistent, because the team can't live on two guys alone.

I don't think this performance spells doom for the team, though. They showed what they can do the game before. The just need to be more consistent.

I remember hearing Matta say that he thought the first Florida game was one of the keys to the season last year. Sometimes, it takes a game like this to get the teams full attention. Hopefully, we can make this latest butt-kicking an investment as well.

There's obviously a lot of young kids in key roles. It's only natural we are going to see inconsistant play. I liked the way the team responded after the Finley game. I think we'll see a similar response to this game.

As others have said, we'll be a much better team in February than we are now. We need to be patient and let Matta do his work. Back to back Big 10 titles are all the continuity that I need with Matta's program.

Why was Jon Diebler out there with the subs for the last 8 minutes of the game? That didnt make any sense to me. His form is not text book perfect by the way...or I dont know what text book youre reading. Im just curious, how many games until I can point out he doesnt shoot the ball well in a system where he doesnt take 50 3 pointers a game. Also, 2 rebound and turnovers dont help either. I still have no idea why he was playing with the 2nd string...i guess to try to pad his stats.

Of course his shot is going to get better, he's 2 for 20 from 3 right now. I can go down to the RPAC and find 50 guys who can shoot better than that. He has made the same amount of 3's this season as terwilliger...on 15 more attempts. And no, he doesnt play point guard and I dont want to hear about watching him closely and how good he looks. I loved the line, "how many times does he pass the ball to the guy who passes the ball to the guy who gets an assist." thats called offense...

Matta playing this guy as much as he does makes no sense to me. With the second stringers Diebler even was playing. The only time he drove the ball was against second stringers.

Diebler is a true freshman playing in his 4th college game ever. He's in the process of adjusting to the college game. The more he plays, the better off he'll be. Makes perfect sense to me.
