Game Thread Ohio State 37, Penn State 17 (final)

I have posted differential stats about this game in the Stats thread. And there will be some differential stats in the preview.

But I just finished adding a section to my main set of spreadsheets that will keep a new differential stat - Differential Passing Efficiency.

For those of you unfamiliar with my use of the term...
Differential Passing Efficiency means, how much better is your passing efficiency than the average passing efficiency given up by your opponents. It works the same way for defensive passing efficiency.
Tomorrow I'll post a table for this stat in the Official Stat thread. For now, this will have to do...

Ohio State is #2 in the nation in Differential Passing Efficiency Defense.
Penn State is #40

There was a nice tidbit in today's presser with Tressel. A reporter asked Coach if they were going to adjust their offense against PSU, citing their difficulty in covering a spread offense (Illinois, Indiana). As we all know, Tressel doesn't run a "system" at Ohio State. He runs whatever works best with the personnel grouping we have that year. On occasion, he'll have something specifically for an opponent.

I personally believe we can beat them straight-up, without a new scheme, but maybe, just maybe, Coach has something up his sleeve just for Joe Pa. More 4/5 WR spread? Something else entirely? Who knows...

Rain is not so bad...

I have seen a lot of posts on the rain. While it may marginalize the talent levels a little, I personally feel the rain provides us multiple advantages as well.
1) Limits the trick plays: PSU will need the trick plays much more than we will to win this one.
2) Gives an advantage to the bigger running backs vs Shifty backs: Beanie Wells - enough said!
3) Stifles the outside LB/CB blitz: TB can simply take a step forward in the pocket and if the field is slippery and the OL gets a push on the blitzers, they will go right by him. These blitzes nagged us last week against MSU!!
4) Favors our passing tendencies: The easiest patterns to run in the rain are a quick slant (Hartline), Wheel route (Saine) and the streak (Robo). These patterns wont require cuts at full speed. Those consist of a majority (I would guess as high as 50%) of our pass plays this year.

My only concern is that it will limit Well's lateral speed this week. He's been very effective bouncing it outside and in the rain that is a tough thing to do.

Either way: :osu: 17 / PSU - 3.

Exactly. I have removed much of that garbage and placed it in this thread. If anybody wants to keep talking about that crap, here is the thread:

I Have a small Wee-Wee and I Hate the SEC

We moderators would appreciate it if folks would attempt to place their comments in appropriate threads.

Note - I'm not criticizing everybody who had a post included in that move. Some of you were responding to comments made about Les Miles, but this is the Penn State game thread, so I moved all of that stuff.

gimme a break

Also in the 06 game, Smith only ran the ball 3 times for 18 yards and one of those rushes was for 17 yards. He ran so much less in 06 compared to 05. Anywho, I'm very confident that tOSU will come away with a win.

:oh:

True, he didn't have the rushing yards last year, but his mobility provided the biggest play of the game and the signature play of Troy's Heisman campaign in the scramble and bomb to Robiskie.

Would Wells really be able to run through PSU's defense, similar to the MSU game, if rain limits the passing attack? Hart had 3.5 ypc for UM.

And it appears that JoePa is currently just one win behind Bowden. These wiki pages look up-to-date, and it's 370-369. I'd think the media would be all over this "storyline," but I haven't heard anything about it.

Joe Paterno - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He passed Bear Bryant against the Bucks with a team that was likely extra motivated.
