Game Thread Ohio State 37, Penn State 17 (final)

Would Wells really be able to run through PSU's defense, similar to the MSU game, if rain limits the passing attack? Hart had 3.5 ypc for UM.

And it appears that JoePa is currently just one win behind Bowden. These wiki pages look up-to-date, and it's 370-369. I'd think the media would be all over this "storyline," but I haven't heard anything about it.
Bobby Bowden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Joe Paterno - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He passed Bear Bryant against the Bucks with a team that was likely extra motivated.

JoePa will have to wait, but don't worry about him, he'll get the lead back this year. FSU's game against Duke this weekend is very possibly their last win of the season (unless they lose that one too).

Paterno roots for crowd to provide edge at home
Boisterous fans played key role to win in 2005

The Buckeyes can expect to see a "White Out" in the Beaver Stadium student section like the one they saw two years ago.

Two years ago, on the eve of a prime-time showdown against Ohio State, Penn State coach Joe Paterno imitated Buckeyes quarterback Troy Smith, sticking his hands under an imaginary center and exhorting fans at a pep rally to be the loudest crowd in college football history the next night. The 80-year-old is planning an encore Friday night at another pep rally on the eve of another game against the Buckeyes. He has no qualms about jumping around on the left leg that was broken less than a year ago when he was steamrolled on the sideline by a Wisconsin player.

Scare last week should help at Happy Valley

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel is too polite to say that Beaver Stadium will be full of rowdy drunks Saturday. So when asked why Penn State fans seem to get so excited about night games, like the one against the Buckeyes, he put it this way:
"I think they make a day of it and, you know, they begin their enthusiasm and it just grows. And by 8 o'clock, your enthusiasm is overflowing."

Players say Jan. 8 loss continues to motivate

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Tight end Rory Nicol said that even if No. 1 Ohio State is being slighted for playing an easy schedule, the players' resolve can't be discounted. "I think everybody has had a chip on their shoulder," he said yesterday.

Penn State player defends himself

Associated Press
A day before a Centre County (Pa.) judge imposed a gag order in the rape trial of Austin Scott, the Penn State tailback professed his innocence in a lengthy newspaper interview. Scott, 22, told the Philadelphia Daily News that on the night he is accused of raping an acquaintance, he went to bed with a "clear conscience" and his life has been in "shambles" since.

Buckeyes brace for roaring fans Noise part of drills before trip to face Nittany Lions
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Wednesday, Oct 24, 2007
COLUMBUS: There will be a blizzard of white come Saturday night in University Park, Pa. Thankfully, the weather forecast calls for a daytime temperature of 68 degrees with rain, so it won't be snow.
For the No. 1 Ohio State football team, that isn't necessarily a good thing. The whiteout will come courtesy of Penn State fans at Beaver Stadium, a place where OSU hasn't enjoyed a lot of success.

Penn State's mission is loud and clear

By BERNARD FERNANDEZ
[email protected]
IF CROWD NOISE is the criteria for establishing a college football game's importance, then the nationally televised matchup of No. 1 Ohio State and No. 25 Penn State in Beaver Stadium almost certainly will be the biggest in the country on Saturday. It's not that the ESPN GameDay crew will be in State College to report throughout the day leading up to the 8 p.m. kickoff. It's not even the "White Out" that will give the packed stands the look of a wintry Siberian landscape.

King?s assessment of his game positive

Jeff Rice

The DVD is a highlight reel of plays made (or made against) the top cornerbacks in the NFL. Put together by Gateway High School football coach Terry Smith for two of his top proteges ? current Penn State cornerbacks Justin King and Lydell Sargeant ? the disc serves three purposes.
AP photo/Darron Cummings

First, it shows King and Sargeant, both juniors with NFL aspirations, the techniques used by corners at the next level. Second, it shows how they use those techniques to make game-changing, jaw-dropping plays.

Tressel almost became a member of Paterno's staff at Penn State

COLUMBUS (AP) - What's brewing today with the 2007 Ohio State Buckeyes ...
BUCKEYE BUZZ: Just to retell an oft-told tale, coach Jim Tressel came this close to coaching for Joe Paterno at Penn State.
It was December of 1974 and Tressel was finishing up his college days at Baldwin-Wallace. He was accompanied by his father, legendary B-W coach Lee Tressel, to State College for an interview with Paterno. There was a graduate assistant job on the line, and Tressel was also considering another one at Akron.
"I sent about 100 letters and I got about two callbacks," Jim Tressel said. "If I had to bet, my dad had something to do with it because, you know, he was well respected."As they drove home to Berea, Jim turned to his dad and said, "'This looks like the place for me.' And he said, 'No, it's not.' And that was it."

Big-game hype descends on Happy Valley as No. 1 Ohio State meets Penn St.
By GENARO C. ARMAS
AP Sports Writer

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Justin King has had a little extra spring in his step this week in practice.
Top-ranked Ohio State is coming to Happy Valley.
"Obviously, everyone says you have to remain the same, that it's just another team," the Penn State cornerback said Tuesday. "But of course, we'll approach it with more intensity, and be ready to play. You only get the No. 1 team so many times."
King was a 2-year-old the only other time a No. 1 team came to Beaver Stadium, when Notre Dame defeated Penn State, 34-23 on Nov. 18, 1989.

Nittany Lions fans stoked for game
By RUSTY MILLER
AP Sports Writer

COLUMBUS - Ohio State cornerback Malcolm Jenkins will never forget his first White Out.
Besides, it may help him get ready for his second one, coming up Saturday night at Penn State.
The memory is still vivid from two years later: around 21,000 fans in the Nittany Lions student section wearing blindingly white shirts, stomping their feet, roaring until they were hoarse.
Even before the sixth-ranked Buckeyes could warm up for No. 16 Penn State, the Buckeyes knew they were in for a long night."The craziest thing was that they had fans lined up from our locker room to the field," Jenkins said Tuesday, shaking his head at the recollection. "That's probably the first time - the only time - that's ever happened. ... People cursing you and spitting at you, and things like that."

Everything amped up for Ohio State

Jeff Rice

UNIVERSITY PARK ? The heightened sense of anticipation that is floating around town and campus this week didn't bypass the Lasch Building.

Behind every practice, every class and every conversation lurks the knowledge that Saturday, No. 24 Penn State (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) will host No. 1 Ohio State (8-0, 4-0) at 8 p.m. in Beaver Stadium. "Everybody says you have to remain the same, it's just another team," said cornerback Justin King. "But you're gonna practice with a little more intensity, and just get ready to play, because you're only gonna get to play the No. 1 team in the country so many times."

Lions to rely on reserves
Penn State must overcome key injuries when it takes on No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday.

By FRANK BODANI
Daily Record/Sunday News

Article Last Updated: 10/24/2007 06:21:44 AM EDT

At bottom: ? PSU KICKOFF ? KNOW SOMEONE IN PATERNOVILLE?
Oct 24, 2007 ? The Nittany Lions would have had a difficult enough time beating the first No.1 team to come to Beaver Stadium in 18 years - without the recent rash of injuries. Penn State has lost four key performers - defensive end Jerome Hayes, defensive tackle Jared Odrick, fullback Matt Hahn and guard Mike Lucian - over the past two weeks.
There are plenty of talented bodies to replace the defensive linemen, such as redshirt freshmen tackles Ollie Ogbu, Abe Koroma and Tom McEowen (even Koroma and McEowen are recently recovered from injuries).
But, "That doesn't mean they're as good as Odrick," said coach Joe Paterno. "Odrick was on the verge of being one of the better football players around, he and Hayes both.
"So those are big losses. ... We have bodies. We have people who have the ability. (But) they haven't had the experience ...

Lions' den tough place for Ohio State
Last Big Ten loss for OSU came there

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - There is nothing blissful or joyous about Happy Valley, the environs surrounding State College, home of Penn State and Beaver Stadium. If you are the visitor to that cauldron of enmity, as No. 1 ranked Ohio State will be this weekend, know that the Nittany Lions that reside there have devoured 19 of the last 20 college football teams that have come calling. The Buckeyes were one of those victims, losing 17-10 here in 2005. This place is a nest hornets would avoid. It is a dark alley thugs would tiptoe past. It is a den that most well-fanged, large felines would deem too hostile to take up residence.
