Faced with toughest foe to date, Buckeyes answer critics with dominant win against Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Most of the fans inside Beaver Stadium headed for the exits quickly at game's end except for a sliver of red-clad diehards in the corner of the end zone. With gleeful Ohio State players leading the way, the crowd threw up their arms to spell out each letter in "Ohio."

Happy Valley belonged to the top-ranked Buckeyes, who cruised to a 37-17 victory over No. 24 Penn State on Saturday night. Todd Boeckman threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns and Chris Wells ran for 133 yards to lead Ohio State to another easy win in its toughest test of the season so far.

Critics silenced: Top-ranked Ohio State leaves Penn State in a 'happy' mood

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Maybe now No. 1 Ohio State will get the respect it's looking for.
Todd Boeckman threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns and Chris Wells ran for 133 yards, leading the Buckeyes to another easy victory, 37-17 over No. 24 Penn State on Saturday night.
The Buckeyes' vaunted defense didn't play up to its typical stingy standards, but it didn't need to be with Boeckman on a roll and Ohio State's massive offensive line dominating the line of scrimmage.
Several Buckeyes (9-0, 5-0, Big Ten) earlier this week complained they weren't getting enough respect despite their No. 1 ranking in the polls and Bowl Championship Series standings. Penn State was only the second ranked team Ohio State has faced this season.

Chris "Beanie" Wells runs for some of his 133 yards on 25 carries before being upended by Penn State's Lydell Sargeant.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Playing in front of a crowd 50 times bigger than his hometown, against a towering backdrop of white, white and more white, Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman calmly took apart the Penn State defense last night.

He threw underneath, over the top, into tight spots and even ran a few times, leading the Buckeyes to a decisive 37-17 victory in Beaver Stadium.
"I thought he threw with a lot of confidence tonight," coach Jim Tressel said. "He played a good game."
The "white out" gathering of 110,134 blanched as they watched the top-ranked Buckeyes absorb an early body blow and rebound to score 21 straight points and win going away.
It was sweet revenge for Ohio State (9-0, 5-0), which tied a Big Ten record with its 19th straight conference win in the same place where it last lost a regular-season game, in 2005.

The Bottom Line

Sunday, October 28, 2007 12:56 AM
By Ray Stein

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

What's the best strategy against a revved-up bunch of hungry Lions? Simple: Act like the top dog in college football. Soon enough those fearsome cats were coughing up hairballs. Me-owww. Leaves are awarded on a zero-to-five basis.
Offense (4 leaves)
Boeckman, Beanie, receivers, tight ends ? the Buckeyes were more balanced than the Wallendas on a boardwalk. With 200 yards rushing and 253 passing, you could give the game ball to almost anyone and not be wrong. Boecks was poised, and the O-line made it all happen.
Defense (3 leaves)
Even less than dominating, the heat-seeking missiles of the D still posted impressive numbers ? 263 total yards, 10 measly points and two late turnovers to make sure things didn't get goofy. Marcus Freeman's 14 tackles led the way, and that Vernon Gholston was almost unblockable.

Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston sacks Penn State's Anthony Morelli, who was limited to 12-of-21 passing and threw an interception that resulted in a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- It wasn't the prettiest or stingiest game of the season for the Ohio State defense, but it might have been the timeliest.
When a play needed to be made, it got done as top-ranked Ohio State knocked off 24th-ranked Penn State 37-17 last night. It was mostly because of a combination of pressure on Penn State quarterback Anthony Morelli -- often brought by defensive end Vernon Gholston -- and coverage by the defensive backs and linebackers.
"We talked about affecting the quarterback," Gholston said. "We were just trying to get after him. ? So when we got the chance we got pressure."

Ohio State's Brian Robiskie tries to slip out of the grip of Penn State's Anthony Scirrotto in the first half.

THE PLAY

Ohio State receiver Brian Hartline's 16-yard catch and run for a touchdown on a quick screen early in the second quarter. It capped a 91-yard drive, increased the Buckeyes' lead to 17-7 and showed tackle Alex Boone can get upfield.
THE STAR

Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman. In his toughest test to date, he threw for three touchdowns, directing drive after drive up the field.
THE STAT

By mid-fourth quarter, Penn State had 265 yards offense. The Ohio State defense gave a little but rarely broke.
THE MISMATCH

Ohio State receivers vs. the Penn State secondary. Given time, Boeckman had plenty of targets, led by tight end Rory Nicol (six catches).

Bob Hunter commentary: Buckeyes now have some ammunition for skeptics

Sunday, October 28, 2007 4:17 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- If you're one of the skeptics who saw Ohio State's early-season schedule as being as soft as cream cheese and predicted the Buckeyes would be 8-0 before they got a meaningful test, this was the night of reckoning.
Penn State is a real opponent and Beaver Stadium is a real pit. None of that "I know these guys lost to Akron, but they're a fine team" stuff. The Nittany Lions were 6-2 and had beaten the Buckeyes four of the past five times they played here, and the second-largest crowd in stadium history, 110,134, was here to see Ohio State lose its No. 1 ranking.
This was it. Finally. The real beginning of the schedule. The night to get some answers.

Penn State fans keep the faith

Sunday, October 28, 2007 3:53 AM
By Frank Fitzpatrick

THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER

All the incidents, large and small, that have tarnished Penn State football in recent months have come to rest atop Joe Paterno's 80-year-old shoulders.
Even as the Nittany Lions' feisty coach defends a program that has long epitomized the best of college football, he sometimes has appeared to sag beneath the weight of recent accusations concerning his players' alleged wrongdoings.
"We're fine," a weary-looking Paterno said earlier this month, pleading with reporters to return their focus to the field. "I'm fine."
That has been the mantra in State College, Pa., since spring, when Anthony Scirotto, Chris Baker and four other players were involved in a campus brawl. Subsequently, Andrew Quarless, Willie Harriott, Joe Suhey and Ryan Breen have been cited for underage drinking. Campus police confirmed that football team members were involved in a fight after the Iowa game.

Some thoughts from a guy who hates both teams from last night.

1) Justin King, you suck. I thought last year you were a better COVER corner than Malcolm Jenkins. I now don't know if you're a better cover corner than Morgan Trent. (Trent's been pretty damn good this year sans ASU/UO). This guy is just brutal. Listed at 185 pounds? If he's 165 I might believe that.

2) Derrick Williams, great career for a 5 star recruit eh?

3) Jake Ballard is an excellent TE with amazing hands and very good athleticism.

4) Marcus Freeman is a man child.

5) Malcolm Jenkins, take a bow. You're the best CB in college football and a top 10 lock this year should you enter the Draft.

6) Todd Boeckman is really, really, really underrated. Great deep ball, great poise.

7) Brian Robiskie merits a holy shit. Amazing athlete, even better receiver, terrific hands....wow

8) The White Out has officially lost all of its mystique. Sure, it's great to beat ND and Wisconsin, but PSU is adhering to their time honored tradition of never beating the big fellas in the Big 11.

9) November 17th should be a doozy

Facts of the matter

Happy Valley played host to another "white out," hoping Penn State's recent home-field dominance could spur an upset of No. 1 Ohio State. And out of the stadium is where the white-clad fans began heading with 9:36 left in the fourth quarter after OSU's Malcolm Jenkins returned an interception 24 yards for a TD to seal a Buckeyes victory. Ohio State proved better in every facet. The Penn State defense wore down and its offense couldn't muster a touchdown drive after the first quarter. The hardest hit on special teams came courtesy of Ohio State kicker-punter A.J. Trapasso. Ouch.
Shining moments

A well-designed first-quarter rollout enabled quarterback Anthony Morelli to hit Andrew Quarless for a 31-yard pass. It set up a Penn State touchdown, the lone first-quarter score against the Ohio State defense this season. ? A.J. Wallace returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to close the scoring

PUTTING 'O' IN OHIO

NO. 1 BUCKEYES' NEW-AGE OFFENSE SHREDS PENN STATE

By LENN ROBBINS

HAVING A BALL: Ohio State's Jake Ballard catches a TD pass in front of Penn State's Lydell Sargeant during the third quarter of the No. 1 Buckeyes' 37-17 victory last night.

October 28, 2007 -- STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Ohio State was wearing its white jerseys with scarlet numerals and those silver helmets that are adorned with Buckeyes decals awarded for exceptional plays.
And Jim Tressel, coach of the No. 1 Buckeyes, was wearing his trademark sweater vest over a long-sleeve shirt, knotted by a conservative scarlet tie at the neck. But these Buckeyes, who crushed No. 24 Penn State 37-17 last night, are not your daddy's Buckeyes. They are not the Florida Gators, either, but clearly last season's 41-14 loss to Urban Meyer's new-age attack in the BCS title game had a lasting effect on Tressel, who watched, as he said "plenty" of film of that debacle.

This game was total domination from start to finish, Boeckman just keeps getting better with each game. Even as a diehard Buckeye fan I would be lying if I said I expected this team to be this good. Did anyone see Miss. St. beat the hell out of a Kentucky team who beat the SEC's crown jewel LSU. Isn't this the same Miss St. team that got destroyed by WVU a week ago? I am so sick and tired of SEC fans and the Media telling us about how great the entire conference is. Here it is plain and simple, the SEC is a bunch of AVERAGE teams beating each other. Not one of them belongs in New Orleans in January. I love how all they can point to is the National Championship Game as proof. OK we didn't show up and you beat us bad, but how about the other two Big 10 SEC bowl games? Penn St. over Tennessee? Wisconsin over SEC darling last year Arkansas? I have just grown tired of this shit, you want to spout facts then spout them all.

Just my rant I had to get off.

OHIO STATE 37, PENN STATE 17
Ohio State defeats Penn State

Sunday, October 28, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
State College, Pa. -- At a Friday night pep rally, Penn State coach Joe Paterno told the Nittany Lions fans he would need their help Saturday night. As expected, the second-largest crowd in Beaver Stadium history, 110,134, gave their lungs a workout, at least for a while.
Unless the white-clad students were going to come out of the crowd to block, tackle and run, it wasn't going to be enough.
With another lockdown defensive performance and a confident Todd Boeckman zipping passes between coverage, Ohio State stomped its way to a 37-17 win, the Buckeyes' most legitimizing victory yet for a nation doubting their No. 1 ranking.
