Game Thread Ohio State 37, Penn State 17 (final)

Waiting on reports from those who went to the game... There's a thread running about PSU fans being embarrassed by other PSU fans' behavior. In my experience, reports of bad behavior tend to be exaggerated regardless of the source, but it will be interesting to hear how the traveling BPers felt about the atmosphere.

This was cool:

Re: Best Student Section in the Country My Ass

I met alot of really cool Ohio State fans this weekend. Alot of really good people from Columbus.

Funny story, my roomate and our neighbor were going to the bathroom and stopped off at an OSU tailgate and were treated to all the beer and food they wanted. Turns out they were Hartline's family.

Yikes:

Re: Best Student Section in the Country My Ass
When they came back to the game after the last time out, when Ohio State was singing their fight song with their fans, our students were pelting then with stuff. It was a sad mess.

I know BB73 was going, not sure how many others, but there is a lot of talk on their board about some pretty deplorable behavior. If it's "self-reported" so-to-speak, I gotta believe it. Too bad a few mooks can ruin what should be a great experience.

1) Who cares what the writers write? Their "job" is to sell papers (or internet adverts), not to make accurate assements/predictions about the state of college football.

2) This was the "best" win of the year for Ohio State. In their third "first test of the year", the Buckeyes thoroughly domintated a decent Penn State team, on the road, at night, in "white out" conditions.

3) Ohio State had only three "bad" plays all night, by my count: (a) the interception near the end of the first half; (b) the blind-side sack of Boeckman in the second half; and (c) the kick-off return for a touchdown near the end of the game. Only one of those three plays led to a Penn State score (the kick-off return), and that was when the Buckeyes led the game 37-10, with about four minutes left in the game. All-out domination by the best team in the country, once again.

4) With Florida's loss to Georgia in the "World's Largest Cocktail Party", there is now a three-loss SEC team better than Ohio State. :roll2:

5) Chris Wells is dominant. Duh! Look for him to receive lots of Heisman talk next year ... after rushing for 1,500+ yards this year.

6) Memo to all Mo Wells bashers: get a clue. The kid runs hard every time his number is called, and he understands the nuances of the game far better than true freshman Brandon Saine. He's the solid #2 back in this offense. If you don't like it, then move on....

7) Brian Robiskie has the best hands of any Buckeye receiver that I've ever seen. Period. He was robbed by the replay officials tonight, but otherwise he caught everything that was even remotely catchable ... with his hands ... away from his body ... just like an NFL coach might teach his son.

8) Speaking of the replay officials ... Apparently, the current standard of review in the Big Ten is as follows: If there is any video evidence that the officials on the field (even if they are only three feet away from the play) made the wrong call, then the call on the field will be overturned. Total BS! Robo got robbed, but the Bucks scored a TD anyway, so "no harm, no foul", I guess....

9) Penn State threw their entire playbook at the Bucks tonight - delays, screen, counters, reverses, play-action passes, and all sorts of combinations of the above - and it still didn't work. The Nits scored only 10 points on offense, and just 3 after their initial drive.

10) Could there possibly be two more overrated players in the country than Derrick Williams and Justin King? Both were "five-star" recruits coming out of high school, yet both are playing like "three-star" guys, and neither would start for Ohio State right now ... or even be in the two-deep. Throw in Anthony Morelli and A.J. Wallace, and Penn State has four "blue chip" recruits who aren't doing much of anything right now.

11) Joe Paterno used to be a disgrace to Penn State, but now he's a disgrace to all of college football. Yes, it's official - JoPa has now forgotten more football than I know, and that's saying something. He's a good decade (or more) past his prime, and getting worse as time goes by. Even with his "rogue's gallery" of players (Connor, Scirotto, Quarless, etc.), he still couldn't give Ohio State a game tonight. Pathetic, truly pathetic.

12) The Big Ten is Ohio State, and everybody else. It's a one-team conference, with all of the other teams being irrelevant on the national level. And it's been that way since 1966, with the exception of Penn State in 1994 (undefeated, but no title) and Michigan in 1997 (AP title only). Yes, the national media are correct - the Big Ten is a joke ... with the exception of Ohio State, who can play with any team in the country.

13) Dare I say it? Todd Boeckman is a better quarterback than Troy Smith. Not as good an athlete, not a "dual threat", not as likely to make the "big play", not a highlight reel waiting to happen, not a Heisman candidate, but better at basic quarterbacking skills - reading the defense, standing in the pocket, releasing the ball quickly, making accurate throws. TB is more than capable of winning a national championship ... this year.

14) The Buckeye defense looked a bit soft tonight, but could that have been the scheme? I'll defer to those who know (osugrad21), but it looked to me like the Buckeyes were conceding the middle of the field. And, they gave up only ten points, to a decent Penn State team, on the road, at night, during "white out" conditions. Just another day at the office for this bunch....

15) And speaking of "white outs" ... if the highlight of your season is holding a "white out" (or "black out" or "gold out" or ...) at night, to the number one team in the country, and getting your collective asses kicked all the way across your home state, then your team is truly irrelevant. Penn State can now join Iowa and Purdue as teams who mean absolutely nothing, either in the Big Ten or on the national scene. Good riddance....

16) Once again, it's all down to Michigan, as it should be.

Great stuff as usual LJB...

1) Who cares what the writers write? Their "job" is to sell papers (or internet adverts), not to make accurate assements/predictions about the state of college football.
Exactly. It always amazes me how so many fans let what these drones type/say get to them. All that matters is what happens on the field, not what Mark May or Ivan Maisel say.

2) This was the "best" win of the year for Ohio State. In their third "first test of the year", the Buckeyes thoroughly domintated a decent Penn State team, on the road, at night, in "white out" conditions.
That was absolute domination. Given the history of this rivalry, I expected a tough game by default, but those guys didn't give a hot damn about the history.

3) Ohio State had only three "bad" plays all night, by my count: (a) the interception near the end of the first half; (b) the blind-side sack of Boeckman in the second half; and (c) the kick-off return for a touchdown near the end of the game. All-out domination by the best team in the country, once again.

(a) TB will still make the occasional mistake, but he has so far always made up for it with 3-4 other beautiful plays. (b) That was the one time I lost my breath. (c) Garbage time TD, totally forgivable. Again...total domination. When your punter doesn't see the field, that is amazing.

4) With Florida's loss to Georgia in the "World's Largest Cocktail Party", there is now a three-loss SEC team better than Ohio State.

Damned SEC! [sarcasm]They're so damn good![/sarcasm]

5) Chris Wells is dominant. Duh! Look for him to receive lots of Heisman talk next year ... after rushing for 1,500+ yards this year.

Like I said, he may be pushing Hart for the title of "best back in the Big-10" now. With the line he's gonna be running behind and the teams he's gonna be behind, he's gonna end up as one of the best to ever wear the Scarlet and Gray. Enjoy him for the next fifteen months, because he's gonna be a very high draft pick in April 2009.

6) Memo to all Mo Wells bashers: get a clue. The kid runs hard every time his number is called, and he understands the nuances of the game far better than true freshman Brandon Saine. He's the solid #2 back in this offense. If you don't like it, then move on....

He always plays hard, and it's just a matter of playing to his strengths. He deserves respect simply for the fact that he wants to be a Buckeye.

7) Brian Robiskie has the best hands of any Buckeye receiver that I've ever seen. Period. He was robbed by the replay officials tonight, but otherwise he caught everything that was even remotely catchable ... with his hands ... away from his body ... just like an NFL coach might teach his son.

He's special...bottom line. Enjoy these last four games this season because he may be on an NFL team in April.

Replay sucks. It needs to go...

9) Penn State threw their entire playbook at the Bucks tonight - delays, screen, counters, reverses, play-action passes, and all sorts of combinations of the above - and it still didn't work. The Nits scored only 10 points on offense, and just 3 after their initial drive.

Jim Heacock should get much more mainstream attention. The adjustments he makes in-game are a thing of beauty.

Sadly, I think all are victims of poor coaching. 5* King or 3* Jenkins? Not even a question. 5* Williams or 3* Robiskie? Not even a question. 5* Morelli or 3* Boeckman? Duh. Jury is still out on Wallace, but given PSU's history, I feel bad for the kid. That was a nice return though.

Sad but true.

Yep. I'm still astounded at how damn good this team is this year, particularly the offense. In the long run, that game in january might have done an awful lot for this program. A motivated JT is a dangerous JT.

Yes he is. But I'll withhold judgement until about 5 pm November 17th to go as far as putting TB in the same breath as TS.

14) The Buckeye defense looked a bit soft tonight, but could that have been the scheme? I'll defer to those who know (osugrad21), but it looked to me like the Buckeyes were conceding the middle of the field. Bend but don't break baby.

Fashionable picks come and go, but two teams are the Big-10.

16) Once again, it's all down to Michigan, as it should be.

Amen sir. Damn it's good to be a Buckeye. God bless you Coach Tressel.:osu:

ehh....let them hate, so long as they continue to fear the nut.

Ok so I bastardized that one......

anywho, look, this guy is working for a local TV channel in Toledo. That's barely one step up from working on a TV Channel here in Springtuckey, except there isn't a TV channel in Springtuckey (which would be the reason why  )....

screw them.....the only thing that counts is Ohio State going out on the field and beating the team in front of them. They can't help the schedule, they can't help that Washington's program had the most precipitous non-NCAA sanction drop just about ever, they can't help that Michigan gagged against App State (even though that is just weird to be applied to Ohio State by transitive) and there is no reason too.......just continue to take care of business and everything will work out.

These people can't stand it and I love it. :groove:

Today's win just may be the sweetest of the year. Fuck the PSU "white out" mystique. Fuck the past past difficulties we've had there (before today, 2-5 at Crappy Valley since State Penn joined the conference). Fuck the media indifference to what we've accomplished all year. We just went into one of the most hostile environments in all of Amercian sports and flat out beat the shit out of a good football team. Oh yeah, fuck Boston College...as if those preppy fucks even deserve a single first-place vote...

Agreed on all fucks. Except I'm rooting for Boston College to remain undefeated (but stay #2, of course) because I love hearing SEC fans whine that they should have a team in the top 2. So I would add "Fuck LSU".

When I watched the long pass to Small, I saw the TE (Ballard or Nichol, I'm unsure) take a step back and then get down in his stance. There was no subsequent motion prior to the snap. Then, he stayed in to block for Todd's pass.

Does anybody know why the coaches chose to do this? Why not stay on the line? If you're going to move back, why not motion across to the other side?

Thanks. :oh::io:

Didn't watch the play again, but putting the TE a step back allows for the WR on that side to play on the line. If the TE is on the line, the WR on that side must be in the backfield (you cannot cover up an eligible WR).

Of course if the TE is going to pass defend, having him a step in the backfield allows him to read and react better.

There are multiple reasons, and another one is he may have been sent in motion to the other side if Todd audibled.

Anyway, those are just a few.

"Sometimes I thought they were going to pass and they ran, sometimes I thought they were going to run and they passed," said PSU cornerback Justin King.
"The pretty much ran everything that we didn't see," added fellow corner Lydell Sargent. "The did not run anything we were used to or saw in tape.

Not sure if this has been posted but I saw this quote and I thought it spoke to the genius of the gameplan yesterday

Just a note: If both the Tight End and the Wide Receiver are on the line, it's legal, but the Tight End is NOT an elligible receiver. Ohio State lined up with the Tight End and a Receiver on the same side on the line, several times in that game.
