A Big Ten line will be a big test

RYAN DIVISH; The News Tribune
Published: September 13th, 2007 01:00 AM

Just thinking about the Ohio State offense causes Kent Baer to drop his head and start rubbing it with his meaty hands. ?You play a team like this, and ? they?ve won two Big Ten championship in a row and played for a national title, and they have lot of kids back from those teams, so they know how to win,? Baer said, staring ahead blankly. ?And they understand how to play in big games.?
The University of Washington defensive coordinator knows his improving unit ? its confidence still soaring after a 24-10 win over Boise State ? will face an even bigger test on Saturday.
Bigger in this case in both figurative and literal senses when it comes to the Buckeyes? offense.

UW Football | Buckeyes' bull's-eye

By Bob Condotta

Saturday
Ohio State @ Washington, 12:30 p.m., ESPN

Buckeyes vs. UW in Seattle 1957 Ohio State 37, Washington 7 In Jim Owens' first year as UW's coach, the Buckeyes cruised in true "3 yards and a cloud of dust" fashion, rushing for 290 of their 353 yards.
1965 Ohio State 23, Washington 21 Woody Hayes' second appearance in Seattle was a tight one as the Buckeyes held on despite gaining just 201 yards.
1969 Ohio State 41, Washington 14 The Buckeyes were ranked No. 1 in the country and blew out a Huskies team that went on to finish 1-9, gaining 502 yards.
1986 Washington 40, Ohio State 7 UW was ranked No. 17, Ohio State No. 10, but the Huskies scored 24 points in the second quarter to break open a scoreless tie and turn the game into a rout. Chris Chandler threw for 204 yards and two TDs.
1994 Washington 25, Ohio State 16 UW was unranked and Ohio State No. 16, but Napoleon Kaufman had 278 all-purpose yards, 211 rushing, to break the career all-purpose yardage record of Hugh McElhenny.

When last seen by anybody outside of Columbus, the Ohio State Buckeyes were getting swamped by the Florida Gators in the national-championship game.
"You remember it, but you don't dwell on it," linebacker James Laurinaitis said of a 41-14 loss last January, the only defeat for the Buckeyes in their past 22 games.
Laurinaitis, instead, says the Buckeyes are focused on some more distant defeats this week.
"We know a lot about the history of Ohio State vs. Washington and what's happened the last two times we played out there," Laurinaitis said. Those games were each UW wins ? 40-7 in 1986 and 25-16 in 1994.

UW Football Notebook | Hart up against his alma mater

By Bud Withers
Seattle Times staff reporter

Washington defensive-line coach Randy Hart talks occasionally during the season to some old friends on the Ohio State staff.
This week, not so much.
Saturday's Huskies-Buckeyes game is the fifth since Hart joined Don James' staff at Washington in 1988. Hart, in his 20th season as a UW assistant, would lead you to think it's old hat, but there are those who believe his blood boils a little warmer for a game against Ohio State, where he played as a 260-pound guard on a national-championship team in 1968. He now weighs about 200.
"You want to go out and do the best you can," Hart said. "It's in front of your friends."

Huskies offense will test Buckeyes
Washington can play power football or spread things out
Thursday, September 13, 2007 3:45 AM
By Ken Gordon

The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Heacock has been conducting a series of experiments this season, mixing and matching parts to try to find a defense that can thwart a power offense and stifle the spread.

Heacock's men will get a perfect test Saturday in Seattle. The 10th-ranked Buckeyes are preparing to face a Washington team that is equal parts fire and rain -- as in, fire off the ball in a traditional two-back set and rain passes from a shotgun, four-receiver look.
Ohio State is ranked first in the nation in total defense and is one of three Division I-A teams that has not allowed a touchdown (Cincinnati and Iowa are the others).

Randy Hart lettered as a guard at Ohio State in 1968 and '69. He is in his 20th season as defensive line coach at Washington.

Through five head coaches, Randy Hart has been a constant at Washington. He is in his 20th season coaching the defensive line for the Huskies.
What makes him indispensable?
"Luck. Absolute luck," he said yesterday.
Hart, 59, will face his alma mater for a fifth time Saturday when Washington plays host to Ohio State.
A native of Willougby in northeastern Ohio, he lettered as a guard for coach Woody Hayes' legendary teams in 1968 and '69. He coached the Buckeyes under Earle Bruce until 1987, when Bruce and his staff were fired.

Buckeyes will arrive in Seattle a bit early

Thursday, September 13, 2007 3:39 AM
By Ken Gordon

The Columbus Dispatch

Even if it's just gazing from the windows of their team bus, Ohio State football players are looking forward to seeing Seattle today.
The Buckeyes are leaving this afternoon for a game Saturday at Washington, partly to have an extra day to avoid jet lag and partly because school has not started and there's no concern over missed classes.
They also left on a Thursday when they went to Los Angeles to play UCLA in 2001, their only other West Coast trip under coach Jim Tressel.

Tressel never coached Notre Dame, Willingham did- so he must be better, right?
Obviously you're joking, but an absurd ranking like that is solely the product of the childishly short attention-span that a lot of paid sportswriters seem to suffer from. On the one hand you've got Willingham, a solid coach in my opinion, but one whose most notable achievements are taking a couple of undertalented teams (at Stanford and, to a lesser extent, ND) to a greater degree of respectability than most anticipated. But a couple of recent wins for a long-dormant power program outbids all that. On the other hand you've got Tressel, a coach with 20 years of major achievements and almost unbridled success, but a terrible defeat in his most recent high-profile game. In the mind of someone who giggles at shiny objects, that one bad beat outweighs 20 years of sustained excellence.

I have to admit that living on the West Coast and listening to the PAC-10 sucking that goes on on the radio is getting to be rather old. This morning on ESPN radio out here, Colin Cowherd starts talking about how bad the Big 10 teams are against the Spread offense. And, yes, once again since TSUN sucks so bad this year; then the rest of the Big 10 must suck also. tOSU offense doesn't score points. tOSU is going to have an extremely hard time with Locker. Blah, blah, blah.

Don't get me wrong, I completely understand team and conference pride; but this ignorant blabbering is getting really freaking old. I'm really hoping that within the first two defensive series that James L. puts a shoulder in Locker's throat.

I was so pissed off this morning that I couldn't remember if it was five or six; thus, the "less than ten years" statement. I was trying to avoid being jumped on for being wrong. So much for that precaution. :)

First off the players from washington have said things like "I can't believe how Ohio State is they just come at you, no shifting, no moving, they just attack you". That just goes to show all of us how much we were vanilla in the first two games. We WILL not be like that IMO on saturday, and we will be a very balanced offense. We have really prided ourselves on balance the past 3-4 years and I don't see us straying away from that. Its good that they think that because think back to last years Texas game. They were worried about Troy's running ability and we used his arm to beat them. This year they're worried about Beanie/our power attack and they'll stack the box while in run formations. I think they'll be ripe for the deep ball in this game because they actually believe we just line-up in a couple formations and run I. Also last year against texas we did a lot of shifting and a lot of formations and I expect to see more of that as well..

As for the rankings the ONLY thing Washington may have over us is QB, and they might not even have the best QB. While he's more talented and got more upside we'll see how makes the most mistakes through INT's and fumbles. My bet is on Locker turns the ball over more.

Picking their Lines is a joke. Sure Ohio States line has been sluggish as of late but Washingtons hasn't beaten down any doors. They beat up on Syracuse and their QB is running around scrambling and making things happen so that means their offensive line is amazing? As for their defensive line being better... I don't even have to say anything to dispute that. They may be more experienced but its another case were We'll find out because our d-line is no doubt more talented jus a matter of getting them so more games to find out how good they are.

Man I sure hope you are right about the first paragraph about how we will show much more than what we have. And I think we will, but it's not my decision to do so.
