Washington features many attractions, plenty of noise

By Doug Harris

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State will be leaving Thursday for its game Saturday against Washington, in part to counter jet lag but also to give players time to do a little sightseeing.
The Seattle area offers plenty of attractions ? the Space Needle, Pike's Market, Mount Ranier ? and coach Jim Tressel hopes his players sample some of the culture.

COLUMBUS Ohio State, winners in its first two games against mincemeat, gets something to chew on Saturday. But Washington might be ready to bite back.

In their first real test of the season, the Buckeyes head to the far Northwest for a game that will make a statement about No. 10 Ohio State one way or another.

Undefeated Washington has Buckeyes' attention

COLUMBUS -- When the vast majority of the public last saw the Buckeyes, they were shuffling through the confetti after Florida dismantled them in the national championship game.

After two weeks on the obscure Big Ten Network, this Saturday marks the first time Ohio State has been on national television (ESPN) since that national championship game. With poll voters and a skeptical countrywide audience looking on, they could be walking into a trap at Husky Stadium.

COLUMBUS - Having fattened their stats on Penguins and Zips, the Ohio State Buckeyes now get to pick on somebody their own size.
The 10th-ranked Buckeyes play at Washington on Saturday in a matchup between 2-0 teams.
"Everyone in our building knows that it's time to turn it up a notch," coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday.

Conferences have stake in Ohio State-UW

DON RUIZ; The News Tribune
Published: September 12th, 2007 01:00 AM

It is hard to claim East Coast bias when your conference stretches into Pennsylvania, so the Big Ten might have only its on-field performances to blame for renewed questions about its quality. The conference ended last season with champion Ohio State losing to Florida, 41-14, in the BCS championship game, and runner-up Michigan losing to Southern California, 32-18, in the Rose Bowl.

UW looks to exploit Buckeyes
Huskies coaches study BCS title game film in search of weakness

The spread option is working its way into the Washington offense, and perhaps never more than Saturday against No. 10 Ohio State. After all, that is the offense the Florida Gators used in shredding the Buckeyes, 41-14, in the BCS championship game in January in Glendale, Ariz.
Naturally, the Huskies have checked that game tape to see what befuddled the Buckeyes.

BIG TEN: Look out, Ohio State! Huskies no longer a doormat

September 12, 2007
By SHANNON SHELTON
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER
A popular preseason notion was that Ohio State's schedule would set it up perfectly to contend for a Big Ten championship.
The Buckeyes would have to replace some key players on offense, but their new starters would have time to develop by playing Division I-AA Youngstown State, midsized Akron and Kent State, and Big Ten also-rans Northwestern, Minnesota, Purdue and Michigan State in the first eight weeks.

UW Football | New guy gets the job done ? quietly

By Bob Condotta
Seattle Times staff reporter

Saturday
Ohio State @ Washington,
12:30 p.m., ESPN

Washington redshirt freshman Ryan Tolar turned down an interview request again Tuesday, something he has made a habit since the day the team first reported for camp last month.
A UW spokesman says Tolar gives the reason, "I don't have anything to say."
"He's pretty quiet," confirms teammate Casey Bulyca. "He doesn't like to talk a lot."
Which makes him perfect to be an offensive guard, his position for the Huskies.

UW Football Notebook | For seniors, it's back to where it all began

By Bob Condotta
Seattle Times staff reporter

Washington receivers Corey Williams and Quintin Daniels made their college debuts at "The Horseshoe," the unofficial nickname for the home of Ohio State football, Ohio Stadium.
Now their careers come full circle, with Ohio State finally returning the visit to Husky Stadium for a 12:30 p.m. game Saturday.
They're now a fifth-year seniors, and they're the only two Huskies who played in that game, a 28-9 Buckeyes win in 2003.

Tressel impressed by Dawgs
By John Boyle
Herald Writer
SEATTLE - While football fans around the Northwest are wondering if Husky football is officially back - whatever that might mean - it seems Ohio State coach Jim Tressel is convinced that Washington is once again a formidable opponent.
When asked about his offense, which is mostly rebuilt after losing a number of stars, including Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Troy Smith, to graduation and early departures to the NFL, Tressel seemed worried about the Washington defense.
"We haven't played the level of competition yet that we're going to face Saturday, so it will be a great test for us," said Tressel, who will bring the No. 10 Buckeyes to Husky Stadium Saturday.

Prediction:

I would be willing to bet that, if OSU wins on Saturday, that the Scout Team Player of the Week will be whoever they have emulating Jake Locker.

Ohio State has benefited in the past from having had athletes on the roster that could give the defense a good look at a running quarterback. I would love to know who that person is this week.

Nothing seems to be available on the internet on this subject; and with closed practices, it is doubtful that anything is forthcoming. Antonio Henton has played the role of the mobile QB on the scout team in the past, but as the 3rd stringer it seems more likely that he is spending the week learning OSU's offensive gameplan than emulating Washington's.

Whoever it is, one thing is clear. With the athletes on OSU's roster, the "Silver Bullets" will have had a better look in practice than either of the Dawgs' first two opponents. Here's hoping that it makes a difference on Saturday.

I'll bet all of my points against all of yours that it will be someone other than Schoenhoft.:moo:

On a serious note, take a look at the Kick-Off statistics in the "Behind the Numbers" section of the Preview. The Buckeyes look to have a huge advantage in this area. There is also a marked, albeit less dramatic advantage in the punting game.

With our advantage in defense and special teams, we should be fine as long as the offense can take care of the ball.

EDIT:

CFN, in their preview of this game, agrees that special teams will make a difference for the Buckeyes.

They predict 23-17, good-guys.
