Game Thread Ohio State 33, Washington 14 (Final)

Interesting that the Defensive line coach for UW thinks the formations will be so easy to read from tOSU.

If only the Buckeyes had some speed on the field - Small, Dane, Hartline, Saine, Mo Wells and others apparently don't count.

[SARCASM]Yep, Randy's DL sure shut us down in 2003...[/SARCASM]

Huskies show they have bite
Washington gaining recognition, but wary of weapons OSU brings to table
By JON SPENCER
For The Advocate

COLUMBUS -- Washington football coach Tyrone Willingham said Monday his players better bring a lunch pail to work Saturday when they entertain Ohio State. He meant that as cautionary praise of wrecking ball tailback Chris Wells, not as criticism of an OSU offense that is still under construction.
While acknowledging the Buckeyes still appear to be feeling their way on that side of the ball, Willingham was complimentary of the nation's 10th-ranked team, noting that the Huskies will be tackling Ohio State's storied tradition "and all that comes with it."

You can't read that article, or generally anything in re: to Willingham, and not have the utmost respect for what he's trying to do given what he inherited at Washington, or Notre Dame before that.

You don't build a winning team, a winning program, and maintain success by installing a high-powered offense and blowing out the lights on the scoreboard. Look at Michigan's situation this year with all their (alleged) weapons and four-year starters. Look at MSU under John L Smith or Minnesota when Glen Mason was running the show. Purdue. Notre Dame. Louisville. Texas Tech. Hawaii.

I heard a caller on 1460 this afternoon during my lunch drive expressing concern about this game against Washington. Not because Washington is a good football team. Not because its on the Left Coast. Not because its in one of the most difficult environments in the Pac-10. And not because its against a team that is proud of its tradition and sick of hearing about how bad they are. This caller was worried about our Bucks because we just don't dominate the scrubs on our schedule 77-0 anymore.

:shake:

Every single D1 coach in the country (Lloyd Carr notwithstanding) knows their Xs and Os and what's going on in 2007. What really separates the good coaches from the bad coaches is whether or not they're good teachers for college kids.

Washington is lucky to have Ty.

Why would O'Neal be in the game if it was a close one?

Tress goes with an experienced Jam O in the dime defense. I was just trying to relate it to 2002 when Will Allen was not a starter, but seemed to always be in the right place at the right time at the end of games. Don't take me too seriously - nobody else does.

i dont think tressel fully trusts boekman quite yet...tressel always calls plays according to his personel.....but the akron game was as vanilla as you can be...would love to see saine and small in the passing game and in space...

Hopefully, JT and staff gameplan will crank up the "yards per carry" to about 5.6, the "air war yardage" to roughly 82 yards per quarter, the turn over margin to a "plus 3", the Beanie Boost Supercharger to 134% and add a Small emphasis on all K/O's and P/Rs.

We can then sit back a watch.:wink2:

Ray Small

I don't post here much, but read a lot. Anyway, I noticed several people expecting/hoping Small to make a difference in the game. Isn't that a pretty big expectation? He has been injured for what, a month, missed a lot of practises and both games, so I don't see how his presence is going to make that much of a difference. If he can occupy some of the attention span of what has been described as a weak point in the UW D, that would be more than enough for me. I just can't see how he is going to be making substantive contributions in his first game back with a new QB.

GO BUCKS!

HUSKIES TEAM STATS

per game NCAA PAC10
Total Offense
393 yds 63rd 8th Total Defense
297.5 yds 40th 4th Points Scored
33 pts 39th 6th Points Allowed
11 pts 15th 3rd

I see this to be a low scoring game.

OSU 24-10

That link doesn't point to those stats, which are hard to read anyways...

Try this link:

Total offense: 62nd (393.00 ypg)
Total defense: 39th (297.50 ypg)
Scoring offense: T-38th (33.00 ppg)
Scoring defense: 15th (11.00 ppg)

Absolutely agree. I just chalked it up to the "gamebreaker" presence...we have playmakers everywhere, but very few who can score from anywhere on the field on any given play.

I am not expecting Small to be like Teddy or Gonzo but he will see the field and he will catch a pass sooner or later in the game. With that being said if he really is 100% he has a chance to impact this game. The thing is Washington has no tape on Ray in our current system so if we come out in shot ginn formation with Ray lined up like Teddy how will they play it?

We need Ray to be the guy the defenses says "WHERE IS HE!" He can do that by showing game breaking ability on 1 or 2 plays. He doesn't have to dominate but make it known that HE IS our deep threat, and that he is our homerun threat. If he can take a quick screen 10 or so yards and show his speed in doing so I think he can certainly impact this game.

You are right though.. expecting Ray to be this dominant offensive player from the on-set is not something we should expect.

But it would be nice though.

Man... now you made me sad that we don't have Teddy anymore. :(

But in all honesty, I know Ray's fast. I know Ginn Sr. said he was the best WR he ever coached. But who here has seen this "game breaking" ability on the field in college? I'm sure Ray has the ability to be "the man" but it certainly won't come to fruition this Saturday.

I'm with Taosman on this one... If healthy, the coaches have an Ace up their sleaves in that the Washington staff has no Idea about Ray's capabilities. So if healthy I really wouldn't be surprised if there's a designed play or two to Ray to maybe get that defense thinking.

The more I read about this game from Bucknuts/Ozone etc... I'm getting more nervous they're making this team sound very very good. It's crazy what one player will do for a team (locker)
