Game Thread Ohio State 33, Washington 14 (Final)

Better put as a lackluster game in contrast to the competition....
N. Illi. gave me a jolt last year; D had yet to turn it up... 2005 was not in the least! 2004 Marshall game gave me high blood pressure that remains to this day! Consider my rationalization a way of remaining positive... But This year seems slightly familiar....

fair enough.. I still think 38-6, 35 - 12, 34- 14 are pretty dominating. Sure its not OU 79 Nobody U zero, I'll give ya that... and no one enjoys a 1900's type beat down more than I do ... but fact is Tressel has proven he isn't looking to run out the whole play book week 1. Coop used to do that, as you may recall. 70 - 7 v. Rice? 72 - 0 v. Pitt? Michigan? L 9 to 13. I guess what I'm saying is this.. keep in mind, Tressel is winning by these margins with a limited playbook. The limiting of the playbook is intentional, and considers that the season is 13 games long (counting the bowl).

Incidentally, Marshall... while also a game that gave me high BP was not the home opener.... that was Cincy... whom were beaten 27-6. Before that in 03, it was Ohio State 28 Washington 9. 02 OSU 45 TTU 21 (14 of which came in the last 5 min. of the game).. the closest home opener was 01 Ohio State 28 Akron 14.

I dig what you're saying... but, bear in mind, last year spoiled us quite a bit. The Buckeyes... while having work to do.... are doing just fine offensively. Are they ready for LSU or SC? Probably not just yet. But, that said, I don't feel "rebuilding" so much as "reloading"

I might eat my words... I don't know... I just don't think there's much to worry about. I suppose that I don't require absolute domination as my measuring stick, it's easier for me to accept. (not saying you do, just sayin...)

FWIW to BKB's argument, I'd add that a 17 point lead and JT as the coach is "dominating."

We were up 3-2 against Akron at halftime, and they were thoroughly dominated, even without us having an effective running game.

3-2 would've been enough to win the game anyway, BTW. JT putting up another 17 to win 20-2 was his version of running up the score.

I like your point, and although I appreciate the difference between JT's 30 point victories and Coop's 70 point wins, I do think there are issues that need to be dealt with.

The most vanilla play in anyones playbook (other than a QB sneak) is a power running play (off-tackle). It's simply a matter of lining up and banking on being physically dominating. Most early games against lessor opponents, we can pull this play off with ease. Not this year. At least not until a team's defense is gasping for air because their offense has gone through 13 straight 3 and outs.

well, it's gloom and doom over on the scout board, and the OL blows, and the entire O staff needs to be fired, and we're going to lose... but people are forgetting that the OL didn't throw two INTs or fumble three times, but that can be corrected. not having enough talent can't...

our D will keep us in any game until the offensive kinks are worked out.

Not to make excuses, but one does wonder how "UP" the Oline gets to play YSU and Akron... I think the Oline needs to show improvement, but I'm not sure we're witnessing a systematic problem just yet.

In any case.... against Washington the Oline had better show up. While Washington's Dline isn't going to go down in history as one of the greatest ever, it is a pretty damn good unit. If OSU fails to control them, taking advantage of a weak secondary won't happen.

Well, pass blocking seems OK so far -- it's entirely the run blocking that's been a problem. More specifically, it's entirely the run blocking when Beanie has the ball that's been a problem. I didn't see Saine having so many issues.

Beanie's got some rust to shake off too, he was limited in the spring and fall practices.

Good thing we're not Michigan.

Lots of negativity and guilt by association because of the melt down up north.
If we don't come into this game fired up and ready to compete on the highest level, we won't deserve to win.
Ray Small will be a big help. Could make all the difference.
Small stretches the field and the whole offense starts clicking.

Did anyone see the 2nd half of the Boise game? After reading th recap, it seems that Boise made many of the same mistakes that we made vs Akron (4 TO), Also, UW scored on long HB pass which was essentially un-defended. I am curious about UW's second half (did they pack it in, or did they struggle to move the ball)?

My Take (

On O

I'd like to see us get Saine involved with some passing to the backs (especially play action) to loosen the D. Some easy, high percentage throw will be important for our young QBs confidence in his first road trip (in a tough environment). Take the crowd out of the game. Once the short passing game is clicking, bring Small in to stretch the field. Those 2 things should loosen the run game up a bit.

On D

I predict that our D will struggle a bit more than people think - this running type QB is something our relatively young D has not seen much of. We certainly need to spy Locker - we have got to make him pass to beat us. I'd like to see a similar gameplan to the one we used against Vince Young in 05 (with a different outcome of course).

This one should be a traditional JT style blowout - I say 24-18 Bucks with UW having a chance to win it at the end, but Jam O swoops in Will Allen style and saves the day with an int on the last drive. Should be a good one.

Go Bucks.

Why would O'Neal be in the game if it was a close one?

COLUMBUS ? Washington coach Tyrone Willingham isn't just reviving a football program, he's resuscitating a career.
Fired after just three years at Notre Dame, Willingham took over a team that was coming off a 1-10 season. After going 2-9 and 5-7 in his first two years, the Huskies are 2-0 for the first time since 2001.

Willingham has Huskies at 2-0 with OSU coming in
Tuesday, September 11, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

It has taken Tyrone Willingham three seasons to drive the Washington football program back to its old neighborhood.

The Huskies would not mind parking their car in a driveway after Saturday.

Unranked Washington hosts No. 10 Ohio State on Saturday in a game that could provide Willingham a gauge as to how far his program has come. Washington is 2-0 for the first time since 2001.

You beat Boise State, it?s a nice win. You beat Ohio State ? people notice. Alumni notice. Ticket buyers notice. Recruits notice.
What kind of recruit is impressed by a win over a program like Ohio State? The good ones.
