Game Thread Ohio State 33, Washington 14 (Final)

23Skidoo

I live in the heart of SEC country and its really hard to watch and talk football with anybody down here...downright impossible. I had a guy tell me today that we have a slow team. Then I mentioned we had the most NFL draft choices in the last 14 years and shut the hell up. I can't imagine how bad it sucks for OSU fans that live in Florida. The BS hype the media spins on a weekly basis is ridiculous as well.

My point is this...if OSU takes care of its business who cares what everyone in our conference does...screw em. I hope we the NC game just to piss people off. If teams like Michigan take a header that helps us recruit better and keep the fence around Ohio. This conference loyalty shit is getting way out of control. How does Wisky or PSU winning help us? The BCS formula is set to where SOS means very little. There will be no more than 3 teams undefeated at the end of the year...probably 2 or less. OSU fans and players need to worry about our team and let the rest take care of itself.

Honestly, I could care less how B10 perception plays into our poll position. Before this game I was leaning towards "rebuild" over "reload", the first half sent me one way, the second vaulted me the other... I'm leaning reload now.
This team should go to a BCS bowl (Capital One at the least) imo, but if wthey do go undefeated and somebody goes to the NC ahead of us... am I going to cry foul? Honestly no. Unless UW turns out to be a LOT better than we all think they are, the schedule is very weak.

I'm just calling bs sensationalism where I see it.

Because they're almost completely irrelevant. This college football season is like night and day compared to last year and so is our team. I know we weren't good against the run last year. What's your point? It doesn't have to do with this year's team.

haha. Ok. It is irrelevant because you say it is irrelevant? Without giving any concrete examples? I guess I've finally found the football god...

It's irrelevant to you because either you are unable to exercise analytical thinking, or you are avoiding the issue because it's not what you want to hear. One thing that is clear though is that we lost three starters on the DL from last season, and you don't replace an All American DT that easily. We got a bunch of young LBers that have shown protential, but with Jake Locker rushing for over 100 yards today with limited resources like osugrad has stated, this year's run defense is still just that, protential.

Great win today for a team that needed some form of confirmation...

However..

1) Washington showed that the Cinderella slipper didn't fit...they beat 'Cuse (ugh) and an overrated Boise State team. While Washington was the fashionable pick, they still are not what we are about to see out of the top Big Ten teams.

2) The defense was opportunistic and showed improved tackling...however the freelancing in the rush lanes opened some lanes for an adequate QB. Lockler is limited...others in the path are not.

3) The Kickoff team came up with the back breaking play...besides that, they were subpar.

4) Pretorius cannot shank gimme points....then blocked PATs/FGs are 100% unacceptable.

5) Boeckman...too inconsistent. Great at times, horrid at times. No comment, but all of our minds are wandering towards a certain pup on the sideline. Todd came out strong in the second half and he deserves major props for that...but still, the WOW factor has not been there.

6) Beanie and the Oline...pretty good all day. Some spots of lackadaisical lapses...but overall, a solid day.

Just some quick thoughts...

edit: stupid grammar

Geez, thanks for bringing me off my high grad. I was hoping to at least sustain it until tomorrow afternoon when I watch the Browns get humiliated for the second week in a row.

Like I said before, first game for me this season. After seeing uninspiaring results from the first two games from the offense, I like a lot of what I saw today, their O line seemed to control the line of scrimmage for almost the entire second half and Beanie and company seemed to run at will for the most part. Boeckman certainly has room to improve, but he is still learning how to be the man under center. We were spoiled with Troy last year. I know it has been said before, but he reminds me a little of Krenzel.

Defense was impressive, as expected. JL picked up where he left off and looked focused. I agree there was some lapses in play on both sides and especially special teams, but overall I was impressed with the win, on the road like that after not really having a real challenge yet this season. Definitely something to build off of going back home to open Big Ten play against Northwestern.

I will admit I'm not scared of anybody on our schedule. Teams with pocket QB's are in trouble against our defense. If the Oline can keep blocking like we did today and we can eliminate stupid penalties and other misques on special teams we will have a top 5 team without question. IMO we can run the table.

All that aside, I am still very pleased with the way things are progressing. For one, this young secondary is much further along than it was in 04. The faster they gel as a group, the more aggressive we can attack opposing offenses. A couple of spots in the front seven have to be shored up, and the sooner this is done the better. Terry would be starting if he was healthy.

On defense Chris Wells is working up to his mid-season form. He's not there yet, but he will be there after a couple more games. He's going to be the center of gravity of this offense. I'm encouraged by how quickly Saine is coming along. He'll be a very key component of this offense by season's end. Todd Boeckman is a good quarterback, nothing against the kid. And it's not even the wow factor. The kid just doesn't inspire confidence or possess a commanding presence. The pass into the end-zone was a floater up for grabs. If that was a Trojan LBer or safety back there, it would have been picked off and returned for long yardage. His skill set is inferior to that of Justin Zwick, but he is a more cautious decision maker. My feeling is that as long as he is not making mistakes (INTs, fumbled snaps), the coaches will keep him in there, especially if the game is close. If you are Henton, the next few weeks of practice is going to make or break your career. If Henton can prove that he can cut down the mistakes, sooner or late, he will get a chance.

havent read the thread and im on withdrawl because of the issues bp's had the last two days. i try to watch the game as a good observer without emotion, but when i saw JT throw his head set down and jump up and down like kid at christmas it got me rediculouusly fired up. that kick block was the paly of the game. we went after them and won the game right there. what do the yahoos at espin have to say now? nothing. best defense in the land! no one can make a rational argument against us? we aren't better than 6 or 7 but we deserve respect. locker got dominated.

If we take care of our business it will all work itself out, basically, the Big10 in general needs to stay quiet and play ball. We went to Washington and got it done, now we just need to play our games and go from there. Everyone has this idea that the Big10 is horrible this year, and Wiscy letting people get so many points doesn't help, nor does the Missagain defeats that have occured.

However, I believe if we do our part and just play we should be fine, at this point I want to get to the Rose Bowl, odds are we will see Cal or Oregon there, if we take one of them out the perception for next year will be back to where it should be, Big-10 is smash mouth football.

1. Henton will NOT get a chance. I want to say that I was againast Todd ever starting in the first place, but I was wrong. I wanted Henton to start so badly because of how much he reminds me of Troy. After watching Boeckman though his passes have nice touch and when Boeckman gets warmed up in games he's a very good QB.

2. Boeckman is fine... Sure he threw some passes he shoudln't have, but they wound up incomplete so it's a mute point. He has a live arm, shows nice touch on the deep ball, and stands tall in the pocket. He is our QB for the next 2 years so I suggest you request a seat on his bandwaggon before it gets too full. He showed great throws to the outside, and threw darts in tight windows across the middle of the field for first downs numerous times. What more do we want from this kid? he throws for 58 percent, 200 yards, and 2 long Td's and we want more?

Here's what I think the case is... We've been straight up spoiled the last 3 years. Do we forget how awful this offense was in 2001-2003 (minus when Clarett was healthy)? Now all the sudden we almost get 500 yards offense and we're bashing our starting QB or saying the wow factor isn't there? I say who freakin cares... We WON, our o-line DOMINATED, Beanie was off the charts, and our recievers stepped up! Sure the offense isn't as explosive as 2006 but this offense is still getting positive yards and the best thing is.. we're YOUNG! This offense in general doesn't have a wow factor. Beanie doesn't even have a wow factor. His style, while it pleases me, won't please the rest the country. People wanna see running backs go around and juke and break the big one. Beanie is about getting his carries and bringing pain to the tackler and wearing down on the defense. The only person on this offense who has the potential to WOW anyone is Ray Small..

If anything I thought our defense was too soft, missed far too many tackles, didn't press the recievers enough, had missed coverage assignments. I thought over-all our offense played far better than our defense. I thought the defense was good but not great. We bent but didn't break, got turnovers, pressured the QB, laid some good sticks on some people, but I think we need to shore up some things.
