Ohio State won't be fooled by Illini passing game
November 11, 2008
Before Illinois shocked Ohio State 28-21 last year, it was coming off its two biggest rushing games of the season (324 and 448 yards). Another difference was that Juice Williams was not as accomplished a passer. That added up to a Buckeyes' defense that was stacked up against the run.
Dared to throw, Williams responded with four passing touchdowns.
Entering this year's game (11 a.m. Saturday, ESPN), with Illinois' running attack sputtering (263 yards in the last three games) and Williams showing he can hit open receivers, Ohio State figures to be more aware of Illinois' passing game while still being able to stop the run.
''We'll see come Saturday,'' Williams said. ''I don't think we've struggled to the point where we can't run the ball. The last couple of games, we haven't done it the way we'd like, but the running game can still be effective. I'm not going to say it's going to be harder or easier to pass. We just have to make the most of every opportunity.''
? ? Illinois is 9-9 vs. Ohio State since 1988, but home field has not been an advantage for either team. The Illini are 7-3 in Coumbus, but 2-6 in Champaign against the Buckeyes in the last 18 meetings.
