Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

Who knows. If OSU looks at tape of USC and says "We need to break out the Oregon style spread to beat these dudes" more power to them. Will Tressell actually need or want to do this? Probably not. I know Fiutak has been watching CFB for along time, but that doesnt make him intelligent, which he isnt. Saying that OSU will win a game if they play like a team which used a totally different offense a year ago against a completely different USC team is just poor journalism. What Fiutak wrote is exactly like saying "USC will win if they can do what Illinois did to OSU when the used Mendenhall and Williams to run all over the Buckeyes." What the hell? How are we suppoed to do that, Pete? Maybe we should start direct snapping to Gable in the backfield and get him to run around with McKnight as if he's the QB! Let's look at it this way: Does anyone here REALLY think Tressell has even watched the game tape from last year's Oregon or Stanford losses? I would bet you top dollar that Tressell hasN,t even bothered because, unlike Fiutak, he realizes that games that areplayed in 2008 are won in 2008. Watching a game that took place last year against a USC team that only vaguely ressembles the current edition is just a waste of time.

I'm reasonable about almost everything, but I have felt for years that Fiutak, like most sports journalist and analysts, is just a hack. You do not prognosticate for 2008 based on games that happened in 2007, Pete!
tendencies mean a lot. tendencies dont change.

that being said if he was a football brainchild hed be making 3.5m from a top tier program...

USC vs. Virginia

Date - August 31, 2008
Location - Charlottesville, Virginia
Result - USC 52 - Virginia 7

Note: I won't have a lot of time this season to compile stats and figures on USC but I will post some things as time allows. Some weeks it will probably be nothing. Rather than look at entire games I think I will just look at selected plays each week and then perhaps go back for a more detailed look once the season is over.

A 52-7 victory on the road in Virginia is a nice way to start off the season and puts USC squarely in the thick of the BCS national title discussion. Of course that sort of talk is premature after week one and Ohio State will be a much tougher test for USC on September 13th. However head coach Pete Carroll had to be pleased with the way the 2008 Trojans came out and competed in week one.

Ohio State Offense Trends 2007-08

Here is some general information related to Ohio State and their recent offensive trends. Below I will highlight the 2007 season figures as well the first two games to start off the 2008 season for the Buckeyes. In a couple of posts later in the week I'll put up some material more specific to the running game and pass attack.

Ohio State Total Offense Yards Per Game Trend

For starters here is a look at the total yards per game generated by Ohio State over the past fifteen games. The high points are the 481 yards and the 459 yards versus Washington and Minnesota in 2007 as well as the 495 yards versus Youngstown State to open 2008. A linear trend shows a slight decline for the period in question. In five of the last six contests Ohio State has failed to break the 400 yard barrier. Conversely in six of the first nine games in the period the Buckeye's broke 400 yards. I suspect the schedule got harder and opponents played OSU's tougher towards the end of the season. I also suspect Ohio State was somewhat guilty of looking past Ohio this past Saturday.

Ohio State Rush Attack

For those interested here is some information regarding the Ohio State rushing game. Below I will highlight the 2007 season rushing trends for Ohio State. Also I have a run game presentation from Jim Tressell as well as some video clips I made during the off season of their rush attack.

Ohio State Rushing Yards Per Game Trend

Here is a look at how Ohio State did overall in terms of rushing yards per game in 2007. Overall it was a very balanced attack week in and week out. As I mentioned previously I thought that LSU did a nice job stopping the Ohio State rush attack in the BCS title game despite surrendering 145 yards. 65 of those yard came on one long touchdown run by Chris Wells. One other play surrendered 29 yards (details below). The rest of the night the rushing game was held pretty much in check. Ohio State only converted on 3 of 13 third down plays in the game. Conversely LSU was 11 of 18 in the contest and had much less trouble sustaining drives. Stopping the rush attack of Ohio State and not allowing them easy third down conversion situations will be a big key to the game versus USC on September 13th.

Ohio State Passing Attack

I don't have as much information on the Ohio State passing attack as I do on the run game. Below I will highlight the 2007 season pass trends for Ohio State. I have a one passing game presentation from Jim Tressell (link down below) as well as a few video clips I made during the off season of their pass attack.

Ohio State 2007 Passing Yards Per Game Trend

Here is a look at how Ohio State did in terms of passing yards per game in 2007. I also threw in the first two games of 2008. The overall Ohio State offense attack was pretty balanced in terms of yardage during the course of the season. The rush attack averaged 196.9 yards per game (28th in the nation) and the pass attack 196.8 yards per game (86th in the nation). However the passing game did go through a rough three game stretch at the end of the year versus Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. Weather may have been a factor in those games. I don't recall. Also Ohio State did not throw the ball very well versus Ohio this past Saturday. The effect of these four down games in the passing department creates a downward linear trend for the fifteen game sample shown below. Interceptions also spiked upwards for the pass attack with 7 of the 14 OSU interceptions coming in the last three games of the 2007 season.

I want a victory over Usc..I can,t waste energy on the names on the back of the uniform. If Pryor happens to have a big play in the game ror Bauserman, it wouldn't matter to Boeckman and it won't matter to me! Go Bucks!

Tress feels the same way and despite his obvious respect for Boeckman, if he felt OSU would have a better shot at winning with Pryor, he'd put him in. However, as Florida proved two years ago, no matter how talented your incoming Freshman QB is, and no matter how normal your senior QB might be, in big games you don't play the freshman aside from specific plays, i.e. third and short for Florida.
This is Pryor's THIRD college game. Does anyone think it's truly a good idea to send him in for entire series against one of the nation's best defenses? Tressell doesn't think so either.

Good preview. The only place I would really bring up any objection is the "C" for special teams. USC's special teams aren't great but they aren't bad and the only time I can remember the special teams being responsible for losses or close calls was three years ago. The USC kickers just aren't asked to do that much so their averages look crappy.

Besides that it's a great and very fair write up.

Sooo, you're saying they are average? :wink2:

Thanks for the kind words.

I hope Pryor get significant playing time.
I think he can gain a lot of yards on the ground especially with him and Wells in there. Example:
