The nose tackle's job -- on a lot of teams -- is pure grunt work. Absorb blockers, clog the middle, let the linebackers run free.
The USC defensive scheme calls for something different. The Trojans want their man in the muck to be disruptive, moving quick and low, using leverage to shed blocks and pursue the ball.
Vidal Hazelton heard the criticism and could not ignore the constant comparisons as USC's receivers struggled last season.
Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith were gone, but the expectations remained.
"We were getting the bad attention," Hazelton said Thursday. "We're just going to use that for our motivation this year. We've got like a chip on our shoulder. We're the big question on the offense."
USC's coaching stafff made an official position change Thursday with longtime linebacker Clay Matthews moving to defensive end.
Matthews, who is from Agoura, was supposed to play defensive end in nickel situations this season but now will play the position full-time and rotate with sophomore Everson Griffen.
"They want me to know the position," Matthews said. "I'm going to the defensive line meetings now. We'll have different looks on defense. (Assistant coach Nick) Holt says we'll have a rotation."
Although he will only practice at defensive end, Matthews will also back up All-American Brian Cushing at the strongside linebacker position.
One player who needs to stay healthy right now is middle linebacker Rey Maualuga. Both of his backups, Chris Galippo and Luthur Brown, are sidelined with back injuries.

Man, that sucks. I hate to see kids hurt, and now we get to listen to how USC wasn't at full strength when they lose.
He will be fine. Just popped out his kneecap, and the trainer put it right back. They said its not that serious.TS10HTW;1226405; said:It will be exactly that too, we win and it's not as impressive because they weren't fielding their best QB. We lose and it's a chance for all the pundits to take shots at us for losing in another big game, but to a team w/o their #1 signal caller through the off season...kinda tough spot.
