Game Thread Ohio State 27, Iowa 24 (final, OT, 11/14/09) - Rose Bowl bound!!!

I just got back from the game. Haven't read or listened to much of anything. What an exciting game!!!

The Shoe was electric for sure during the game, but not more than any other big Big Ten game. But once the game got to overtime, the crowd put the noise into overdrive. That was as loud as I've seen The 'Shoe when Iowa had the ball on their first OT possession. You could just feel that Ohio State was going to push Iowas backwards. Every fan in the stadium was on their feet, just willing that defense to push them back ever play. That was the most exciting set of downs I've seen in that Stadium. And I've seen just about every home game for the past 20 years.

I knew Iowa would fight. Their O-line played great...looked a lot better than Penn State's. From my seat it seemed like all the 'luck' went Iowa's way. Whether it was the bounce of the ball, or the timing of a penalty, or the catch of a tipped ball. But the Buckeye fought through it, and came out on top at home in the end.

I think Iowa was stupid for not going for it at the end of the 4th quarter. If I was an Iowa fan I would be very pissed at that decision. You don't play for overtime on the road. Big mistake...and the crowd and the defense took advantage.

See you next week in Ann Arbor.
See you on New Year's Day in Pasadena!

5 in a row...and counting...

Every D-1 QB can make those throws with time...that is my question. Why was he given the opportunity to figure out if he could do it in a hostile environment?

Hell, if he burns me deep early while I'm trying to break him, then I adjust

This is approach I would have taken, however I didnt disagree with the staffs initial game plan. What bothered me though was that adjustments were not made very quickly once he proved he wasnt phased by the game/environment.
But if this kid builds upon this game, then he is going to be a very good QB. Which is great for Iowa and for the Big Ten.
This should be one a heck of a game next November in Iowa City!

Agreed. Even with the QB not being rattled, the fact that the front 4 weren't getting pressure should have triggered adjustments. That said, the kick return and Thoma's poor punting made some real differences in this one. It resulted in me slapping myself on the head more than once, but I'm thrilled with the results... and fuck M!ch!g@n!

You stay classy CBS and Greg Doyle. Here's a direct quote off of their front page.

Disgusting. And don't attack me now, Ohio State fans. Don't go there, because I'm onto you. I heard you. You were booing on Saturday, all 105,455 of you. That was the attendance at Ohio Stadium, and you were in agreement that Tressel's strategy in the final 2? minutes of regulation was an embarrassment. So don't tell me I'm being mean here. You hated Tressel's strategy as you saw it unfold. Don't defend that gutlessness now.

Doyle needs to understand that what he thought were boos were Booms.

Idiot

I don't think those were "Booms" when Tressel didn't run the hurry up on the last offensive possession of regulation. It was absolutely the right move though. Staring at 3rd & long with that field position, you don't let it all hang out for a first down, and you sure as hell don't hurry up to the line for a pass play that may fall incomplete and give Iowa the ball back with over 90 seconds left instead of under 60. That move by Tressel made Ferentz just uncomfortable enough to sit on the ball at the end of regulation instead of going for the winning score themselves - when they had all of the momentum.

Too many people think of Tressel's decision making in terms of what they would like to see happen in the game instead of what likely could happen.

The Buckeyes' strategy in overtime was every bit as gutless. After the OSU defense drove Iowa backward on its overtime possession -- forcing an up-for-grabs interception by Vandenberg on fourth-and-26 from the 41 -- the OSU offense basically took a knee three times before kicking the field goal. Three snaps, three dives into the teeth of the Iowa defense. Net gain: three yards.
Why try to air it out, when the other team hands you a victory? Does this guy even understand football?
