Game Thread Ohio State 27, Iowa 24 (final, OT, 11/14/09) - Rose Bowl bound!!!

Too many people think of Tressel's decision making in terms of what they would like to see happen in the game instead of what likely could happen.

Bingo. These same people also are the ones that you'll be seeing in the casinos in Toledo wishing that the $0.25 at the slots turns into $25.

Personally, I have no problems with the play calling today. I'd much rather have a coach who understands how to win at chess as opposed to a coach who tries to win at checkers.

A thought that crossed my mind during the game today was something to the effect of what Tressel ball is about:

1) Mistake free Offense
2) A great Defense
3) Winning on special teams

Today I think we pretty much played (big) mistake free Offense. I'm sure that there were a few missed assignments here and there but the no turnovers was key. With the exception of one or two throws it looked like TP's mechanics were better... at least w/r/t stepping into his throws.

The defense didn't play lights out, but was pretty effective. We lacked pressure on the QB but were still pretty good. I think we held up pretty well against the run. I'll have to go back and rewatch as my 8-year old was kind of distracting during the game. But as far as their QB... Vanderwhatever is gonna be a baller. He was very impressive regardless of his age. Color me impressed. Kid can play. That pass between Checkwa and Coleman for the TD was damn near the gutsiest pass I've seen a QB throw this year. I'm not sure that I can write it off to skill or luck, but with the way he played... I'm leaning toward skill.

Special teams was not great. At least from the punting department. Kickoff returns weren't much. I'm not sure that there was a lot to work with there so not finding fault. I think that Iowa's coverage teams did well. The return for the touchdown, however, had me scratching my head. As I saw that bobbled I thought to myself, "Well, if this makes it to the 15 they should be happy..." We know how that turned out. I guess you're gonna get burned once and a while for a return like that... and I'm thankful that it didn't cost the guys a trip to CA. But back to punting. With the punting we saw today, Tressel ball was a hard way to watch a game being played. I just never had much of a comfy feeling for the entire game... and I think that it came down to field position. I'd like to see the average starting field position for both teams. It couldn't have been very good for us.

That said, a win is a win and I'm really looking forward to seeing JT and the team come home with a win in CA. Already looking into flights!

... and FTR: What I did to beat Iowa this week was to not make a single prediction on the score... anywhere... or talk much about the game for that matter.

OH!

Put Doyle in the same category as several other media, news, or talking heads. They say that for reaction hoping to increase their stock as writers etc. I read his comments once, I know not to read him again.

I think it is amazing we spend hours worrying about if we will land this 5 star QB or that 5 star DT recruit when all of our hopes and dreams were riding on the foot of a 2nd string walk-on kicker. (Okay, so a couple of those recruits help to put that kicker in position to have that chance)

hard fought game that our defense deserved to win at the end, especially the seniors. i just think that our offensive play calling was WAY too conservative the entire game. it just seemed like they didnt let pryor loose to throw the ball effectively instead of little 2 yard dumpoffs. im not tryin to bash the coaches-caugh caugh tressel caugh caugh- but that was seriously some of the worst play calling i have ever seen

You must be new to this football thing then.

I'm sure that Jim Tressel's playbook is just replete with plays where a 2 yard dumpoff is the primary read. :roll2:

Jim Tressel's playcalling was good enough to give this team a 14-point lead in the 4th quarter. Jim Tressel's playbook didn't miss tackles in kick coverage, it didn't jump offsides on a pick-six and it didn't doink another INT up in the air for an Iowa receiver to get a second chance to catch.

Probably. Thank goodness he hasn't called that false start play the last three weeks.

I hated that one!

Speaking of the offsides, that was damn close. Is a play like that reviewable?? I didnt think he actually crossed the line...

It sure looked like it to me. Then again, with the way refs are recognizing whether or not something crossed a line (real or imagnary), who the hell knows?
