Spartans bursting with Ohio flavor

Friday, October 19, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Michigan State quarterback and St. Ignatius grad Brian Hoyer said the argument is a frequent one inside the Spartan locker room: Which state produces better football players, Michigan or Ohio?
With 17 native Ohioans on the roster, the North Olmsted native said his side, even in the face of a homestate onslaught, usually wins that fight.
"There's a pretty big Ohio vibe here," Hoyer said.

Reynoldsburg native Justin Kershaw moved from defensive end in the spring.

When Michigan State retired No. 95 last year in honor of legendary end Bubba Smith, Justin Kershaw of Reynoldsburg gladly took the jersey off his back and switched to No. 11.

Coaches Dantonio, Tressel not exactly alike

Jim Naveau | [email protected] - 10.18.2007

COLUMBUS ? As long as Ohio State?s Jim Tressel and Michigan State?s Mark Dantonio coach against each other, people will look for similarities and ask if there is a little bit more of a rivalry in the game because the two worked together for years and are friends.
And as long as they coach against each other, the two participants will downplay the personal side of the game.
Dantonio was Ohio State?s defensive coordinator from 2001-2003 and was Tressel?s defensive coordinator at Youngstown State from 1986-1990. He is in his first season at Michigan State after being Cincinnati?s head coach for three seasons.
Similarities in his program and Tressel?s aren?t hard to find going into Saturday?s OSU-MSU game at Ohio Stadium.
Start with the countdown clock.

so what you're saying is, Dantonio isn't very Tressel-like?

I fully expect Ohio State to win this game, but I think it will be a battle until midway through the fourth quarter.

Hoyer is from St. Ignatius, and the only game I went to he stunk it up and the Wildcats got killed thanks it part to his 4 interceptions and numerous bad decisions.

So I think for the good of the team someone should hook me up with a couple tickets.
