Patience key at Purdue

COLUMBUS It wasn't quite Tony Soprano in bathrobe and slippers retrieving the morning paper, and Purdue Head Coach Joe Tiller wasn't ready to knock off his neighbor. She's a sweet lady, really. But Tiller wanted her to knock it off: Silence her perhaps.

Tiller's neighbor was making her morning stroll to get the newspaper when she spotted West Lafayette's leader. Tiller, ready for a long day of film study with fourth-ranked Ohio State playing the lead role, just wanted to get to work.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Boilers' second-half defense not a major concern to Tiller
)

October 4, 2007

BY MICHAEL OSIPOFF Post-Tribune staff writer
Purdue allowed all 19 points in its victory over Notre Dame in the second half, continuing a trend of the Boilermakers struggling after halftime.
"We're just trying to get better defensively in all areas," Purdue coach Joe Tiller said. "I'll repeat what I've said numerous times, and that is I was not as disappointed in our defense as some others. Even after watching the tape, I was convinced more so, I was not as disappointed in our defense as I was in our offense in the second half. I'm convinced our defense was in position to make plays, and as long as you're in position to make plays, you're going to make some of them."
The Boilermakers had only two sacks against the Irish, including just one by a defensive lineman, end Cliff Avril. But Notre Dame was employing a lot of maximum protection schemes, with seven or eight players blocking.
"It's going to be difficult to rush them," Tiller said. "Obviously, we don't have Anthony Spencer, we don't have one of those real premier guys to go get the passer and, as a result, everybody has to try to step up a little bit. We're going to get a sack here and there like we did Saturday, but they probably aren't going to come in bundles like we're used to in the past. We got spoiled around here. It's back to reality."

Scout.com: Big Ten Fearless Predictions, Oct. 6

Big 10 Game of the Week
Ohio State (5-0) at Purdue (5-0) 8:00 PM ABC
Why to watch: After two years off, Purdue welcomes back both Ohio State and Michigan to the schedule, getting the big boys in back-to-back weeks that could either put the program in a top five land of superpowers, or relegate it to midlevel Big Ten status yet again. Ohio State benefited as much as anyone off of all the upsets last weekend, and now is within striking distance of being in the national title team photo again. There's still a lot of big games left to be played for the Buckeyes, with at least five battles against likely bowl bound teams still to play after its date in West Lafayette for it toughest test of the year so far. The Boilermakers have put up gaudy numbers, and can't be blamed for Minnesota and Notre Dame not being any good, but they're still not getting much in the way of national respect despite starting off 5-0. With Wisconsin and a rising Illinois off the schedule, things don't look too bad over the second half of the year, but Purdue first has to take advantage of the biggest home game on the docket.
Why Ohio State might win: Purdue, meet a real defense...

If your driving yourself nuts with worry over this one(which is easy to do given the early season schedules of both teams) I say just ask yourself these two simple questions.

How confident are you that our D can keep their O under 21?

How confident are you that our O can score more than 21 on their D?

Put me down for an enthusiastic "very" for each.

In my most humble opinion I'd say this game favors the Bucks tremendously due to having to dig deep and play with passion in the second half at Washington. Purdue simply hasn't been put in that position to this point in the season. They will come out firing; however, Ohio State's philosophy of punching people in the proverbial throat early in games is going to make all the difference in swinging the momentum away from Purdue. I love the extra emphasis on hitting the stuffing out of people on D and special teams this year.

:oh:
