Game Thread Ohio State 16, Purdue 3 (Oct. 11th)

ummmm... there's been a lot of posts that I've skipped in this thread. Just getting back to the hotel now... so pardon me if this has been said before in this thread:

My takeaways from today:

1) We scored more points than Purdue. Hence, we took care of the key to the game.

2) We DID NOT loose to Toledo.

3) I drank a lot of beer with a hundo or so Buckeyes at a bar in Vegas. It was a good day.

Unless we make MSU and PSU average. We were average against Purdue, Illinois, Cincy, and PSU in '02.

Agreed. All you need to do is be the better team on the field that day.

As for this game against Purdue, here are my grades (because you really need to know my opinion):

Offense: C-
Playcalling, execution, blocking, etc. - All seemed to be "just enough" to win. Well, their grade shows.

Defense: A
Sure, at times it appeared they couldn't get off the field. But they held a Purdue team (maybe not quite the power of Purdue's recent-past teams, but they're still Purdue) out of the endzone and below 300 yards.

Special Teams: A
16 points from them. What more can you ask for? Although, I wonder why Purdue never tried to fake-punt pass to the wide open gunner when they had two on the same side of the ball. He was rarely (if ever) covered. Oh well - maybe they will next week.

Those two guys sitting behind me: F
Holy cripes, you two need to think of something positive to say. Pryor's deep pass that went over the receiver isn't the end of the world. I'm sure Tressel knows more about the offense than you do, so quite whining about Maurice Wells being in the game. And it isn't the end of the world when the punt is "only" 40 yards.

Player of the Game: Malcolm Jenkins.
Even without his blocked punt, he was all over the receivers like hair on soap. He got his 11th interception, and he made play after play (including a couple of nice open-field tackles).

We can't be average next week or the week after.

Agree. Not being a doomsday forecaster, but a Malcom Jenkins-less OSU team has a decent chance of getting beat by Purdue today. Future teams will likely not be as dumb in giving him opportunities that he had today. Good thing he and the rest of the D were up to the task. The offense looks like it's still trying to gel together behind Pryor.

Let's hope for a great week of practice and film study.

I hate that argument. "If we play like this next week, we will get killed."

If you've watched college football for the past 25 years, u realize how silly that statement is.

Man oh man...when we were 3-3 in 2004, how did Cbus not self destruct.

I like you, but I don't really like when people insult my intelligence. Seriously, man, I'm not one of those guys who goes around making these "THE WORLD IS ENDING" posts all the time and you know that.. I wouldn't have lasted here if I did.

What have I said that's so groundbreaking? We have to fucking score touchdowns against the better teams in the conference. Our defense has looked good against who? They've not looked good against really good teams. PSU happens to have a QB who can run, and a RB, and a defense. And special teams.

We have some serious problems. Our offensive line looked good against Wisconsin. Hasn't really looked good in any other game. Defensive line? Not looking good. Games are won and lost in the trenches, and we're winning games and NOT winning in the trenches. Our defense as a whole did look better today, but it is Purdue. Until we can prove that we can stop a respectable offense that can both pass and throw, I'm not going to be very optimistic when we play a very good team.

If we're below average, we'll lose, and if we play average, I don't like our chances. What's the problem with that statement, honestly? Is that a statement that makes it sound like the world is coming to an end? Nope. It's a Buckeye fan who has been pretty unimpressed with the team so far and sees a rather impressive PSU team coming to town. Do you think we can win against Penn State without scoring a TD?

Man...ranked 11th, and 6-1 (3-0) with the only loss to #1 at the time on the road. If that's average, I hope we have tons of average seasons.

Have we won 4 games in a row or lost 4 in a row? I can't remember.
I'm happy that we've won, but you're making it sound like we've won convincingly in every game we've ever played, and also making it sound like we haven't been blown out against all elite teams that we've played in the last three years.

I get that you're concerned, and I get what you're saying. But, in '02 PSU came in with all of the above as well. We won without scoring an offensive touchdown. We've done it before. Just because we don't play up to our potential doesn't mean we can't hold them down or they won't fuck up too. Of course if we play like shit it decreases our chances of winning...that doesn't mean we can't or won't.

2002 defense > 2008 defense

(Defensive line, specifically. And offensive line.)

Except the 3 lowest totals were before he became a starter, so assuming he starts the rest of the way it projects to more like 1100, plus of course about 600 rushing yards at the same rate. But I don't think it's unreasonable to assume he could continue to improve as he gets more Big10 experience, and put up bigger numbers when it's necessary to help win the tougher games we have remaining.
thats what 112 ypg since hes taken over as the full time starter?

Awwww...that's all I needed to hear.

Dude, i'm not ragging on you at all. You make valid points, are a great poster, and it wasn't direct at you. I just am not as realistic as you are. That's what I do :) Your right about our team. But so am I :)

But back to the most important thing...you really like me?

i am going to ding u into another universe

I got some other shit going on around me at the moment, so pardon the overly pissed off tone.

And those lines had all they could handle against Illinois, who fucking sucked, Cincinnati, who fucking sucked, and Purdue, who fucking sucked, and a lot of people said the same things. "If we play like this agianst ______, we're gonna lose...well, we kept right on playing that way, and won every game. I don't want to keep comparing this team to the '02 team, because that isn't fair. I'm just saying that I have faith that we will do what is needed to win the big ten. I'll believe otherwise when it happens. I choose not to worry about wins. I completely understand the people who do. I've played in enough football games to know that the score doesn't matter as long as you have more points than the other team. How you got there doesn't matter at all as long as you get there.

Cooper's teams outscored the opposition a billion to forty for ten fuckin' years. I'd rather the opposition outscore us a thousand to 950, as long as those losses don't come against those fucking fucks.

You make valid statements. I guess you're just more confident than I am. :tongue2:

Just don't know what else I can say about our offense other than that if someone can get lost even with a GPS in his car driving to his neighborhood grocery store, this must be what that feels like. How can we not have any identity with Beanie, Pryor and great play action options like Hartline and Robo? If we don't change something up, this is going to end up like PSU '05 very fast.
