The future's so bright, I've gotta wear... shades.
Not a good way to start the week.

One student has died following a shooting this morning at Chardon High School in Ohio. Four others were injured and the shooter is in custody.

"There is one deceased student," Chardon Police Chief Tim McKenna said at a news conference. "That's the sad news for all of us today."

Police will not yet identify the gunman, saying only that he has not yet been charged and that he is a juvenile.

The gunman opened fire with a handgun just before 8 a.m. in the school cafeteria where students were eating breakfast, authorities and witnesses said.
con't....

I live nearby Chardon and work in the area for Lake Health hospitals. None were brought to our facilities because we're not a Level 1 Trauma center but we had numerous staff members leave to get their children. Such a horrible tragedy and we've had a few of these incidents in this area over the years. I'm being told one of the football coaches who is actually from Ashtabula, OH (Urbans hometown) chased him down and tackled him as he was fleeing the school property. However, how true those details are I'm not sure.

Freshman Danny Komertz, who tells the Associated Press he witnessed the shootings, says it appeared the gunman was targeting a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table. Komertz, 15, says one student who authorities say was killed was trying to get under a table to protect himself and shield his face. Komertz tells the AP the shooter was known as an outcast who had apparently been bullied. Komertz says that there were at least 100 students in the cafeteria at the time and that most fled immediately as shots were fired.

...

One high school junior, Nate Mueller, who was hit in the right ear during the shooting, tells The Plain Dealer that he used to be friends with the shooter in middle school.

He tells the newspaper that he heard a shot behind him, turned and felt a sting on his ear. "My friends were crawling on the floor, and one of my friends was bent over the table, and he was shot," Nate says. "It was almost like a firecracker went off. I turned around and saw him ... standing with a gun and I saw him take a shot."

Mueller says one of his friends, Russell King, who was at the table with him, recently started dating one of the suspect's former girlfriends, who is home-schooled. He says the shooter was "silent the whole time."

Mueller tells the paper that he ran out of the building, hid behind a car and called 911.

The coach (along with another teacher) chased him off the property, hadn't heard about the tackling though.

I have a friend that has cousins that go to that High School. They told her that the shooter was sold some fake drugs and got mad. He actually tweeted he was going to bring a gun to school and threatened the kids...

Crazy shit... whatever happened to just getting in a fight?

Scared to catch an ass beating...everyone's so quick to pick up a gun nowadays. I know I sound like John Witherspoon in Friday but it's the truth...

What's ironic is that a lot of these school shootings are happening in rural/suburban schools that are in decent areas with very little violence, and not in inner city schools where you would expect it. I mean Chardon is a small town school where everyone knows everyone and the kids do well in school and predominantly play sports/athletics. Chardon has had a very good D2 football program over the years and they are a small D2 school to put...

That is because inner city schools have metal detectors and actually check students for guns.

This is my high school. I graduated from there a few years back. I will tell you this...never in a million years did I begin to fathom something like this happening my hometown. Never.

I'm pretty well connected to the community and this is hurting pretty bad.

I might get grilled here for this but I don't care... Try this fucker as an adult. I wouldn't be opposed to the death penalty but anything less than life in jail is a travesty for this piece of crap.

The prosecutor said that they will file a motion to do just this, and it's expected to be granted. A triple homicide at age 17, yea, you've earned being tried as an adult.

I understand they'll try him as an adult and there will be no plea bargain - it's going to trial.

However, is it true that they can't hand out the death penalty to someone under the age of 18 even though being charged as an adult? That's what I had heard and I don't know the judicial system well enough to comment on it. I reckon if that's the case he'll just spend life in prison...
