Game Thread Ohio 14, Ohio State 26 (Sept. 6)

BuckeyeXtra - The Columbus Dispatch : Depth of backfield to be measured
Depth of backfield to be measured

With Beanie Wells out, three backups are ready to help carry the load

Funny, isn't it, how when the news broke that Ohio State will be without star running back Chris "Beanie" Wells against Ohio University, the Buckeyes immediately went from being a 34-point favorite to a 34-point favorite.

That partly shows how tall a task Ohio faces today in Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes (1-0) are ranked third in the country, and the Bobcats (0-1) have never beaten a ranked team in 13 tries.

But it also highlights perhaps the biggest difference between a mid-major program and a perennial powerhouse: quality depth.

Ohio is struggling to replace its all-time leading rusher, Kalvin McRae, who used up his eligibility last year. In a loss to Wyoming last week, the Bobcats gained 39 yards on 21 carries.
